Isolated hypospadias: The impact of prenatal exposure to pesticides, as determined by meconium analysis.

Although endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs, including pesticides) are thought to increase the risk of hypospadias, no compounds have been formally identified in this context. Human studies may now be possible via the assessment of meconium as a marker of chronic prenatal exposure. The objective of the present study was to determine whether or not prenatal exposure to pesticides (as detected in meconium) constitutes a risk factor for isolated hypospadias. In a case-control study performed between 2011 and 2014 in northern France, male newborns with isolated hypospadias (n = 25) were matched

[A review of progress in research of effect of air pollutants on fetal growth].

Slow fetal growth is a global public health concern because it might be associated with many diseases later in life. With the progress of technology to measure long-term air pollution exposure. Many epidemiological studies have evaluated the effects of maternal air pollutant exposure on fetal growth. In this paper, we summarize the research progress in this field after the analysis on the related literatures retrieved from the databases of Medline and Web of Science.

Exposure to DDT and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy among South African women from an indoor residual spraying region: The VHEMBE study.

Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS), the use of insecticides inside residences for malaria control, may cause elevated exposure to insecticides such as dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane (DDT). Evidence suggests that DDT exposure may increase blood pressure but no study has investigated associations with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) in an IRS area. We measured the serum concentration of DDT and its breakdown product dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethylene (DDE) at the time of delivery among 733 rural South African women participating in the Venda Health Examination of Mothers, Babies and thei

[Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons exposure and birth defects].

Birth defects are one of the most common adverse birth outcomes, which create a heavy economic burden to the country, society and family. And they are also one of the biggest problems facing public health today. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of toxic pollutants existing in the environment widely, resulting from incomplete organic matter combustion, and can be taken into the body through various ways including the digestive tract, respiratory tract and so on. Recent researches suggest that the exposure of PAHs may be associated with various birth defects, while the special

Preconception care: caffeine, smoking, alcohol, drugs and other environmental chemical/radiation exposure.

INTRODUCTION: As providing health education, optimizing nutrition, and managing risk factors can be effective for ensuring a healthy outcome for women and her yet un-conceived baby, external influences play a significant role as well. Alcohol, smoking, caffeine use and other similar lifestyle factors, have now become an integral part of the daily life of most men and women, who use/misuse one or more of these harmful substances regularly despite knowledge of their detrimental effects. The adverse health outcomes of these voluntary and involuntary exposures are of even greater concern in women

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is one of the most prevalent and modifiable risk factors for somatic, behavioral, and neurological abnormalities. Affected individuals exhibit a wide range of such features referred to as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). These are characterized by a more or less specific pattern of minor facial dysmorphic features, growth deficiency and central nervous system symptoms. Nevertheless, whereas the diagnosis of the full-blown fetal alcohol syndrome does not pose a major challenge, only a tentative diagnosis of FASD can be reached if only mild features are pr

Cryptorchidism and endocrine disrupting chemicals.

Prospective clinical studies have suggested that the rate of congenital cryptorchidism has increased since the 1950s. It has been hypothesized that this may be related to environmental factors. Testicular descent occurs in two phases controlled by Leydig cell-derived hormones insulin-like peptide 3 (INSL3) and testosterone. Disorders in fetal androgen production/action or suppression of Insl3 are mechanisms causing cryptorchidism in rodents. In humans, prenatal exposure to potent estrogen diethylstilbestrol (DES) has been associated with increased risk of cryptorchidism. In addition, epidemiol

Exposure of young men to organochlorine pesticides in Southern Spain.

It has been hypothesized that endocrine disruptors and especially synthetic estrogenic environmental contaminants (xenoestrogens) are etiologic factors in the global decrease of sperm counts and other problems of the male reproductive tract, including cryptorchidism, hypospadias, and testicular cancer. This possibility has prompted research into the current and historical incidence of these diseases. The largest area of intensive greenhouse agriculture in Europe is near the Mediterranean coast of Southern Spain, where this activity has greatly expanded since the 1960s. We determined and compar

Epidemiological methods to assess the correlation between industrial contaminants and rates of congenital anomalies.

The present knowledge of epidemiological methods, applied to assess the correlation between industrial contaminants and rates of congenital anomalies is reviewed. The concept of congenital anomalies may be extended to include other adverse reproductive outcomes, such as malformations, infant mortality, stillbirths, spontaneous abortions, intrauterine growth retardation, ectopic pregnancies, multiple births, altered secondary sex ratio, and parental sub-fertility. The review of occupational exposures associated with congenital anomalies indicated: (1) inconsistency of the reported associations;

Prenatal exposure to amphetamines. Risks and adverse outcomes in pregnancy.

Based on findings in humans and the confirmation of prenatal exposures in animals, amphetamines and methamphetamines increase the risk of an adverse outcome when abused during pregnancy. Clefting, cardiac anomalies, and fetal growth reduction deficits that have been seen in infants exposed to amphetamines during pregnancy have all been reproduced in animal studies involving prenatal exposures to amphetamines. The differential effects of amphetamines between genetic strains of mice and between species demonstrate that pharmacokinetics and the genetic disposition of the mother and developing emb

Viruses and other perinatal exposures as initiating events for beta-cell destruction.

There is strong evidence that the aetiology of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) is due to a complex interaction between genes and the environment and that the pathogenesis is autoimmune. In early perinatal life the immune system is induceable and exposures in this period may initiate autoimmunity. Recent findings of time and space clustering of birth dates for later diabetic cases together with the early observation of a very high prevalence of diabetes in cases with rubella embryopathy suggest that foetal virus exposure may be important. Recent findings from Sweden and Finland sugge

Prenatal depression and psychotropics in offspring asthma and atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: The associations of prenatal maternal depression and exposure to antidepressants and benzodiazepines/Z-drugs with the risks of offspring asthma and atopic dermatitis are unclear. METHODS: The data from 1369 child-mother dyads with maternal depression and 13 690 birth year- and sex-matched child-mother dyads without maternal depression for the period from 2002 to 2009 were selected. Prenatal exposure to antidepressants and benzodiazepines/Z-drugs was also considered. All children were followed from their birth date to the end of 2011 to identify the development of asthma and atopic

Prenatal exposure to dental amalgam: evidence from the Seychelles Child Development Study main cohort.

BACKGROUND: Dental amalgams contain approximately 50 percent metallic mercury and emit mercury vapor during the life of the restoration. Controversy surrounds whether fetal exposure to mercury vapor resulting from maternal dental amalgam restorations has neurodevelopmental consequences. METHODS: The authors determined maternal amalgam restoration status during gestation (prenatal exposure to mercury vapor [Hg(0)]) retrospectively in 587 mother-child pairs enrolled in the Seychelles Child Development Study, a prospective longitudinal cohort study of the effects of prenatal and recent postnatal

A review of single-cell transcriptomics and epigenomics studies in maternal and child health.

Single-cell sequencing technologies enhance our understanding of cellular dynamics throughout pregnancy. We outlined the workflow of single-cell sequencing techniques and reviewed single-cell studies in maternal and child health. We conducted a literature review of single cell studies on maternal and child health using PubMed. We summarized the findings from 16 single-cell atlases of the human and mammalian placenta across gestational stages and 31 single-cell studies on maternal exposures and complications including infection, obesity, diet, gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, environmental …

Birth outcomes and background exposures to select elements, the Longitudinal Investigation of Fertility and the Environment (LIFE).

Evidence suggests that trace exposures to select elements may increase the risk for adverse birth outcomes. To investigate further, we used multiple regression to assess associations between preconception parental exposures to Pb, Cd, and total Hg in blood, and 21 elements in urine, with n=235 singleton birth outcomes, adjusted for confounders and partner's exposure. Earlier gestational age at delivery (GA) was associated with higher tertiles of urine maternal W (-1.22 days) and paternal U (-1.07 days), but GA was later for higher tertiles of maternal (+1.11 days) and paternal (+1.30 days) blo

Prenatal Stress Exposure and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Associated With Risk of Postpartum Alcohol Misuse Among Women Veterans.

OBJECTIVES: Maternal alcohol misuse during the postpartum period is associated with negative maternal and infant outcomes. This study examined whether greater stress exposure in the year before the baby's birth and maternal post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were associated with postpartum alcohol misuse among a sample of women veterans. Maternal PTSD was also examined as a moderator of the association between stress exposure and postpartum alcohol misuse. METHODS: Data were drawn from the Center for Maternal and Infant Outcomes Research in Translation study, a multisite prospective cohort

Associations between prenatal exposure to organochlorine pesticides and thyroid hormone levels in mothers and infants: The Hokkaido study on environment and children's health.

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are environmental contaminants with potentially adverse effects on neurodevelopment. Previous findings on the association between prenatal exposure to OCPs and the maternal or infant thyroid hormone system are inconsistent. Moreover, the influence of exposure to multiple OCPs and other chemical compounds is not clearly understood. Our study therefore aimed to examine the association between OCP exposure and both maternal and infant thyroid hormone systems. We also explored multiple exposure effects of OCPs and the influence of each compound using weighted quant

Triclosan in paired-maternal and cord blood, and their relationships with congenital heart disease of baby.

Prenatal triclosan (TCS) exposure has been reported to be associated with various birth outcomes and thyroid function, while the study of TCS exposure for congenital heart disease (CHD) patients is limited. In the present study, paired mother-fetus blood samples from CHD and healthy participants were collected to measure TCS exposure levels, and then check their relationship. Coupled with the concentrations of thyroid function biomarkers [free thyroxine (FT4), free triiodothyronine (FT3), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and thyroid antibodies (TgAb)] in maternal blood, we aimed to investiga

Relationship between ovarian reserve and parental exposure in first-generation offspring of Yusho patients.

In mice and rats, exposure to dioxins has been shown to have adverse effects on ovarian function in first-generation offspring (F1). However … signed-rank test, W =  - 633, p < 0.001). In a sensitivity analysis restricted to F1 offspring with maternal exposure only (n = 31), the median z-score was -1.69 (one-sample Wilcoxon signed-rank test, W = 56, p = 0.0002), confirming the robustness of this finding. This evidence suggests that Yusho exposure adversely affects the ovarian reserve in F1 offspring.
