Tea tree oil for Demodex blepharitis.

BACKGROUND: Demodex blepharitis is a chronic condition commonly associated with recalcitrant dry eye symptoms though many people with Demodex mites are asymptomatic. The primary cause of this condition in humans is two types of Demodex mites: Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis. There are varying reports of the prevalence of Demodex blepharitis among adults, and it affects both men and women equally. While Demodex mites are commonly treated with tea tree oil, the effectiveness of tea tree oil for treating Demodex blepharitis is not well documented. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of t

Demodectic mange, dermatophilosis, and other parasitic and bacterial dermatologic diseases in free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the United States from 1975 to 2012.

The white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is a common and widespread North American game species. To evaluate the incidence, clinical manifestations, demography, and pathology of bacterial and parasitic dermatologic diseases in white-tailed deer in the southeastern United States, we retrospectively evaluated white-tailed deer cases submitted to the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study from 1975 to 2012. Among 2569 deer examined, bacterial or parasitic dermatologic disease was diagnosed in 88 (3.4%) individuals, with Demodex spp (n = 37; 42.0%) and Dermatophilus congolensis (n =

Analysis of gamasid mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) associated with the Asian house rat, Rattus tanezumi (Rodentia: Muridae) in Yunnan Province, southwest China.

During a survey lasting from 1990 to 2008, we captured 4,113 Asian house rats, Rattus tanezumi Temminck 1844 (Rodentia: Muridae) from 28 counties of Yunnan Province in southwestern China. From these rats, a total of 19,304 gamasid mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) were collected and identified as comprising 50 different species. The species diversity of gamasid mites from this single rat species is higher than that reported previously from multiple hosts within a given geographical region. Of the 50 mite species, 31 species belonged to ectoparasites and 19 species belonged to free-living mites. The

Ectoparasites, uropygial glands and hatching success in birds.

The uropygial gland of birds secretes wax that is applied to the plumage, where the secretions are hypothesized to eliminate fungi and bacteria, thereby potentially providing important benefits in terms of plumage maintenance. We analyzed variation in size of the uropygial gland in 212 species of birds to determine the function and the ecological correlates of variation in gland size. Bird species with larger uropygial glands had more genera of chewing lice of the sub-order Amblycera, but not of the sub-order Ischnocera, and more feather mites. There was a fitness advantage associated with rel

Parasitological analysis of Leonese royalty from Collegiate-Basilica of St. Isidoro, León (Spain): helminths, protozoa, and mites.

The royal burial chamber of what is today the Collegiate-Basilica of St. Isidoro in León, Spain, built and remodeled between the 10th and 13th centuries and in the 20th century renamed the Kings' Pantheon, has 13 royal tombs that were opened in the presence of the Abbot-Prior of the Collegiate to enable a group of researchers to obtain all possible information from the royal remains. Several samples were sent to the Parasitology Unit of the Animal Pathology (Animal Health) Department at the Veterinary Faculty of León (Spain). In all the tombs, eggs and remains of nonparasitic mites were observ

Survey of feather diseases of exhibition budgerigars in the United Kingdom.

Breeders of exhibition budgerigars have commented for some years on an increasing prevalence of feather diseases in their birds. A survey of these diseases identified 37 different conditions, but three-quarters of the cases were due to only four conditions: psittacine beak and feather disease, pulpitis, feather mites and feather cysts.

[Detection of serum immunoglobulins in pulmonary acariasis patients].

The IgG, IgA, IgM levels in sera of 51 patients suffered from pulmonary ascariasis and the serum IgE level in 16 of them were determined using single immunodiffusion technique or biotin-avidin enzyme immunosorbent assay (ABC-ELISA). The results showed that the IgM level of the patients was approaching to that of the normals while IgG (169.77 +/- 46.91 U/ml), IgA (308.39 +/- 91.83 U/ml) and IgE (458.90 +/- 273.64 U/ml) levels of the patients increased significantly. This suggests that some components of mites may have stimulated the humoral immunoreactions of the host.

Characterization of the immune response of domestic fowl following immunization with proteins extracted from Dermanyssus gallinae.

Dermanyssus gallinae is the most significant ectoparasite of European poultry egg laying production systems due to high costs of control and associated production losses as well as adverse effects on bird welfare. In this study, soluble proteins were extracted from unfed D. gallinae (DGE) using a urea-based detergent and ultra-filtration, passed through a 0.22 microm filter and blended aseptically with adjuvant. One group of laying hens was immunized with DGE and adjuvant (Montanide ISA 50 V) whilst another group (Control) received physiological saline and adjuvant. All birds were immunized on

Evaluation of the scabicidal effect of a single dose of fluralaner in a rabbit model of crusted scabies.

Recently, scabies was included in the WHO roadmap for neglected tropical diseases 2021-2030. Till now, ivermectin is the only available oral drug that is currently approved for treating crusted scabies in humans. Concerns regarding its efficacy and safety have prompted research efforts to find new alternatives. Our study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effect of a single dose of fluralaner in cases of crusted scabies in comparison with that of repeated weekly high doses of ivermectin. For the in vitro study, twenty adult female mites were exposed to 50 μg/ml and 100 μg/ml ivermectin and flur

Integrated in vitro and in vivo evaluation of ivermectin hydrogel formulation for management of scabies with pharmacological assessment.

Scabies is a contagious skin disease caused by Sarcoptes scabiei mites, posing a significant health risk, especially in poor, crowded settings. Existing treatments are facing challenges due to poor compliance and side effects, necessitating alternative therapies. Hydrogel formulations offer promise by enhancing drug release and bioavailability. This study tested a novel topical ivermectin (IVR) hydrogel for scabies, evaluating its effectiveness, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. It also assessed treatment outcomes of skin structure and its effect on animal behavior and locomotor a

Whole transcriptome analysis of the poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer, 1778).

SUMMARY Although the poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer, 1778) is the major parasitic pest in poultry farming causing substantial economic losses every year, nucleotide data are rare in the public databases. Therefore, de novo sequencing covering the transcriptome of D. gallinae was carried out resulting in a dataset of 232 097 singletons and 42 130 contiguous sequences (contigs) which were subsequently clustered into 24 140 isogroups consisting of 35 788 isotigs. After removal of sequences possibly originating from bacteria or the chicken host, 267 464 sequences (231 657 singleton

Comparison of nonchemical, organic and synthetic Varroa destructor control strategies in honey bee colonies: effects on parasite load, colony strength and health.

BACKGROUND: Varroa destructor remains the most significant biotic threat to honey bee colonies, and increasing resistance to synthetic acaricides necessitates alternative control strategies. This study compared four season-long Varroa management strategies that differed in spring drone-brood management and late-summer treatment strategy: (i) synthetic treatment without drone-brood removal; (ii) the organic Baden-Württemberg (BW) concept; (iii) an integrated oxalic acid 'split and treat' strategy; and (iv) brood availability manipulation (BAM), a biotechnical strategy combining systematic drone
