PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We aim to illustrate the potential viability of MCTD as an underlying aetiology of Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome. The case is probably the first description available in the literature of the Melkersson-Rosenthal as an early manifestation of mixed connective tissue disease.
RECENT FINDINGS: The Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome consists of a triad of recurrent lip and/or face swelling, fissured tongue, and intermittent facial palsy. Mixed connective tissue disease is a multisystemic disorder with overlapping features of systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, and polymyositi

Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) is a water channel protein that is most highly, but not exclusively, expressed in the central nervous system. In 2005 AQP4 was shown to be the antigenic target of neuromyelitis optica-immunoglobulin G (NMO-IgG, or AQP4-IgG), an antibody found specifically in patients with NMO and in formes frustes of NMO, such as longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM) or optic neuritis (ON). This discovery facilitated the clinical, pathological, and radiological distinction of NMO and the spectrum of NMO-related disorders from classical multiple sclerosis. In addition to its use

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an immune-mediated inflammatory demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system with a predilection for the optic nerves and the spinal cord. Immunopathological evidence suggests that the target antigen of the disease is aquaporin-4. An IgG antibody against this protein has been explored as a molecular marker for the disease and as a diagnostic tool due to its high sensitivity and specificity in various populations.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the value of NMO-IgG testing in Indian patients with clinical and magnetic resonance imaging features consisten

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the neuropathologic features of neuromyelitis optica (NMO) at the medullary floor of the fourth ventricle and area postrema. Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) autoimmunity targets this region, resulting in intractable nausea associated with vomiting or hiccups in NMO.
METHODS: This neuropathologic study was performed on archival brainstem tissue from 15 patients with NMO, 5 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), and 8 neurologically normal subjects. Logistic regression was used to evaluate whether the presence of lesions at this level increased the odds of a patient with NMO havin

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is a disease of the CNS characterized by severe optic neuritis and longitudinally extended transverse myelitis. Recent studies suggest that anti-aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibodies, NMO-specific biomarkers, are pathogenic and target AQP4-expressing astrocytes in NMO, although an additional event (T-cell response or infection) should occur for anti-AQP4 antibodies and complements to pass through the blood-brain barrier and cause the CNS lesions. AQP4 is the major water channel in the CNS, but it is also expressed in fast-twitch skeletal muscle fibers. However, m

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is a severe inflammatory demyelinating disease that predominantly affects the optic nerve and spinal cord. Since the discovery of a specific serum marker for NMO in 2004, and its subsequent identification as an antibody to aquaporin-4 (AQP-4), various methods have been developed to test for the antibodies in patients sera.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the principal methods used to measure AQP-4 antibodies in patients sera, describe their contribution to neuromyelitis spectrum disease and examine their value in the early detection of disease.
METHODS: We compare

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is clinically characterized by severe optic neuritis and transverse myelitis. In Japan, NMO has been named optic-spinal multiple sclerosis (OSMS) and it has been thought to be a subtype of multiple sclerosis (MS). However, several clinical and laboratory findings suggest NMO or OSMS is distinct from MS. Recently, the disease-specific antibody (NMO-IgG) was found in the serum from NMO patients, and its target antigen was identified as aquaporin-4 (AQP4) water channel protein which is mainly expressed in astroglial foot processes. However, the pathogenetic role of AQP4

A new clinicopathological case of Devic's neuromyelitis optica, including unusual predominant clinical features (fatal dysautonomia) is described herein: pathological examination showed extensive and severe demyelination mainly involving the optic nerves, the medulla, and spinal cord, which was particularly pronounced in the thoracic segments, and thus explained the unusual vegetative symptomatology. In a review of 45 clinicopathological cases described in the literature as Devic's disease (DD), it turned out that only 22 cases, including the patient described here, fulfilled the recently defi

Spinal cord injuries (SCI), whether traumatic or inflammatory such as transverse myelitis (TM), are characterized by severe neuroinflammation, demyelination, and long-term disabilities. Current treatments remain limited, highlighting the need for novel non-invasive therapeutic approaches. Repetitive magnetic stimulation (RMS) has emerged as a promising strategy, but its mechanisms and efficacy in inflammatory contexts remain poorly described. Here, we investigated the effects of RMS applied as trans-spinal RMS (rTSMS) in a mouse model of focal spinal cord demyelination induced by lysophosphati
