Reforming Management of Behavior Symptoms and Psychiatric Conditions in Long-Term Care Facilities: A Different Perspective.

Despite much attention including national initiatives, concerns remain about the approaches to managing behavior symptoms and psychiatric conditions across all settings, including in long-term care settings such as nursing homes and assisted living facilities. One key reason why problems persist is because most efforts to "reform" and "correct" the situation have failed to explore or address root causes and instead have promoted inadequate piecemeal "solutions." Further improvement requires jumping off the bandwagon and rethinking the entire issue, including recognizing and applying key concep

Skin care in burn patients: a team approach.

Skin care is an important but often neglected issue in burn management. Newly healed burn skin is fragile, itchy, dry, and susceptible to sunburn. Without proper skin care in burn patients, they may suffer from sleep and mood disturbances, depression, and poor compliance to treatment that can jeopardize the rehabilitation process. At the Prince of Wales Hospital, skin care has been managed since February 1996 by a team consisting of plastic surgeon, dermatologist, occupational therapist and nursing specialist. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of a skin care program run by a

Relinquishing in-home dementia care: difficulties and perceived helpfulness during the nursing home transition.

Institutionalization of an elderly relative suffering from dementia is a key transition in the caregiving career. This study determines factors that predict the problems and help dementia caregivers perceive while institutionalizing an elderly relative. By using a sample of 185 dementia caregivers interviewed before and after institutionalization, the authors conducted a multivariate regression to identify relevant predictors of search difficulties, professional help, and family help during the nursing home transition. The personal and social resources of caregivers prior to placement (e.g., m

Infection control surveillance in a rehabilitation hospital.

Infection control surveillance in a rehabitation setting is essential to quality assurance because of the high number of infection risk factors found in this patient population. These factors include longer length of stay, high incidence of urinary tract instrumentation, and high incidence of skin lesions, including decubital and stump wounds. A surveillance process is described which offers timely access to each infected patient's diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up, and results in simplified hospital-wide antibiotic monitoring. Quality assurance problems identified through this surveillance

Nurses' Perceptions of Fundamental Care in Preventing Venous Ulcer Recurrence: A Qualitative Focus Group Study.

Venous ulcers are the most prevalent among those affecting the lower limbs, with high economic and quality of life impact. Due to the chronicity of venous disease, healing and recurrence cycles are common. Patient adherence to self-care activities to prevent recurrence is very low, so it is crucial to reflect on nurses' experiences with this phenomenon. A qualitative and descriptive study was developed to analyse nurses' perceptions about preventing venous ulcer recurrence. According to the inclusion criteria, focus groups with nurses were implemented. Three focus groups were conducted through

Beyond nutrition: the district nurse's role in addressing loneliness in enteral tube feeding.

Enteral tube feeding provides nutritional stability for individuals unable to meet requirements orally. However, the psychosocial consequences of enteral tube feeding, particularly loneliness arising from disrupted social eating practices, remain under-recognised in community care. Eating is a socially and culturally embedded activity linked to identity, belonging and relational connection. For individuals receiving long-term enteral tube feeding, altered participation in shared mealtimes and social rituals may increase vulnerability to isolation despite physiological stability. This article c

Development of an innovative double-chamber syringe for intravenous therapeutics and flushing: Nurses' involvement through a human-centred approach.

BACKGROUND: In nursing practice, flushing the catheters pre and post-drug administration is considered an important clinical procedure to prevent complications, and requires the use of several syringes to comply with international standards of care. We envisioned an innovative double-chamber syringe that enables the filling and administration of both solutions. Following current international recommendations, the development of new medical devices should integrate Health Technology Assessment. The Human-centred design is usually used for that assessment purposes, as a method that actively incl

What promotes skin self-examination?

The American Academy of Dermatology's national program of Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention, developed in response to the rising incidence of invasive melanoma in the United States, has annually produced extensive print, radio, and television coverage about performing skin self-examination (SSE). This study was conducted to determine factors that motivate people to perform SSE. A 1996 telephone survey evaluated performance of SSE for skin cancer and used questions to identify self-perceived. The performance of SSE was directly correlated with the self-perceived risk of the developm

Comparison of midwifery care to medical care in hospitals in the Quebec pilot projects study: clinical indicators. L'Equipe dEvaluation des Projets-Pilotes Sages-Femmes.

The purpose of this study was to compare indicators of process and outcome of midwifery services provided in the Quebec pilot projects to those associated with standard hospital-based medical services. Women receiving each type of care (961 per group) were matched on the basis of socio-demographic characteristics and level of obstetrical risk. We found midwifery care to be associated with less obstetrical intervention and a reduction in selected indicators of maternal morbidity (caesarean section and severe perineal injury). For neonatal outcome indicators, midwifery care was associated with a

The Relationships and Mediating Effects of Work-Life Factors on Acute and Chronic Fatigue Among Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is a prevalent occupational health concern among nurses. Inadequate recovery from acute fatigue may contribute to persistent fatigue, while work-related and life-related factors may influence this process. AIM: To examine factors associated with chronic fatigue and the mediating roles of life-related factors in the association between acute and chronic fatigue among Taiwanese nurses. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted. A total of 322 clinical nurses were recruited through online forums and social media groups and completed a web-based questionnaire assessing s

Effects of interactivity, immersion, and physical discomfort on learning in VR nursing education.

BACKGROUND: Although VR provides innovative opportunities for nursing education, little is known about how its core features immersion and interactivity shape learners' self-efficacy, motivation, and cognitive processes. Furthermore, the impact of physical discomfort during VR use remains underexplored. This study investigates the effects of immersion and interactivity on affective and cognitive constructs in nursing education using virtual reality (VR), while examining the influence of physical discomfort and the moderating roles of age and gender. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conduc

Implementation of a surgical ward innovation: Telemonitoring controlled by healthdot [SWITCH-trial PROTOCOL].

BACKGROUND: Monitoring patients' vital signs is important to detect abnormalities that may indicate a disturbed postoperative course. However, manual monitoring or so-called spot checks performed by nursing staff require a significant amount and are time-consuming. Wearable devices have been shown to be at least equally effective in collecting these data and have the possibility for continuous monitoring. This technology could enhance improvements in early warning score systems by continuous measurement or ease onward monitoring after earlier discharge. Furthermore, the implementation of weara

[Using theater to teach palliative care].

Despite the benefits of palliative care, a number of myths still persist, hindering its implementation. This led to the idea of innovating how we teach through a project that aims to improve understanding of palliative care using theatrical art. This article describes the co-creation of a play and its presentation in medical and nursing courses. To assess the impact of the intervention on the level of interest and knowledge of palliative care, we used a pre- and post-performance questionnaire, the result of which suggests an improvement in these two elements. Feedback received after the event

Proposed nursing care plan for women who suffer a perinatal loss, according to Watson's theory.

Losing a newborn is for many mothers a painful end in which death occurs when life is expected, which makes them live a time of loneliness, personal doubt and feeling of failure. After carrying out a previous qualitative study analyzing the experiences of 25 women who suffered a spontaneous perinatal loss at any time during pregnancy and a systematic review of the factors that affect the emotional response after perinatal losses, a nursing care proposal is presented based on Watson's Theory of Transpersonal Human Care to respond to the needs of women who experience this loss process. This care

Persuasive Technology in Nursing Education About Pain.

Mobile devices, as persuasive technologies, represent an important platform to promote changes in attitudes and behaviors. They are not only understood as tools, but as a learning process that provides different opportunities to learn how to learn. The objectives of the study were to measure the quality of a virtual mobile learning object, to measure the mental workload of the educational intervention, and to evaluate the learning results. This is a technological production study with a mixed method, quasi-experimental approach. Three simulated clinical scenarios comprise the m-OVADor@, allowi

Palliative care for people with late-stage Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease provides a unique model to examine issues of long-term and palliative care for a younger and more mobile population who remain institutionalized longer than other nursing home residents. A lack of community-based alternatives for young families, and the need for highly complex care planning encourage long term care placement mid-way in the disease process. Despite the need for a body of knowledge specific to environmental enrichment and therapeutic strategies for improving quality of life for people in the later stages of Huntington's disease, there is no published data in
