The purpose of this study was to evaluate retrospectively the outcomes of cementation of cross-linked polyethylene (PE) liner in a well-fixed metal shell in 23 hips with an average follow-up period of 6 years. The mean Harris hip score was 69.6 +/- 12 (range, 46-83) points preoperatively. The average postoperative follow-up was 72.3 months (range, 56-100 months). At the final follow-up, the mean Harris hip score was 95.5 +/- 3 (84-100) points. There was no change in the bone-shell interface. No new osteolytic lesions were identified. The lesions impacted with bone graft had united completely.

We asked whether total hip arthroplasties (THAs) using alumina-on-highly cross-linked polyethylene bearing would improve functional activity and reduce aseptic loosening, polyethylene wear, and osteolysis. Consecutive primary THAs were performed in 71 patients (73 hips) who were younger than 50 years (mean age, 45.5 years) with femoral head osteonecrosis. We report our 10-year follow-up results of 630 consecutive Anatomique Benoist Giraud I hip prostheses implanted between June 1990 and December 1995. At this time, 520 were satisfactory and 25 had been revised. Although the majority of patients remained asymptomatic at the end of follow-up, the real survivorship of the implant was less than 91% (33 patients who were in the waiting list for revision due to osteolysis at that time were revised by December 2007). We previously reported wear data at a minimum of two years following thirty-four total hip replacements with a Marathon cross-linked polyethylene liner and twenty-four replacements with a conventional (gamma-sterilized-in-air) Enduron polyethylene liner. Wear of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) contributes to debris that can lead to periprosthetic osteolysis in total hip arthroplasty. We assessed the clinical and radiographic results of 40 porous-coated acetabular cups with an Acetabular Cup System polyethylene liner over a minimum 14-year follow-up. We present the results of the insertion of self-made polyethylene T-tubes for a period of 15-24 months for the treatment of chronic middle-ear effusion. We compare the outcome of our patients to the reported outcome of patients treated with other commonly used ventilation tubes for either shorter or longer periods of time. The purpose of this study is to assess the relationship between acetabular component polyethylene wear, pelvic osteolysis, and clinical symptoms to determine when operative intervention should occur and to predict the degree of difficulty of the revision.
