Nonsurgical management of two unusual cases of dens in dente.

The management of two unusual cases of dens invaginatus in a maxillary and a mandibular lateral incisor with a periradicular lesion are reported. The patient presented with pain and localized swelling. Despite the complex anatomy and diagnosis of dens invaginatus, nonsurgical root canal treatment was performed successfully. Furthermore essential clinical considerations and treatment options are suggested. Early diagnosis and management are important to avoid complications.

Gorlin syndrome: a case report.

Gorlin syndrome is an autosomal dominant inherited condition that exhibits high penetrance and variable expressivity. It is characterized mainly by Basal cell carcinomas, Odontogenic keratocysts and skeletal anomalies. However, medical literature documents both common and lesser known manifestations of the disorder involving the skin, central nervous system, skeletal system etc. Diagnosis of the syndrome in childhood is basically through oral abnormalities. A case of Gorlin syndrome has been reported here, with review of literature.

Cornelia de-Lange syndrome.

Cornelia De Lange syndrome is a relatively uncommon, multiple congenital anomaly / mental retardation disorder of unknown etiology. Its incidence has been reported to vary from 1 : 30,000 to 1 : 50,000 of live births, without any known racial predilection. However, it has been considered to be due to a new dominant mutation. Main clinical features of this syndrome include growth retardation, developmental delay, hirsutism, structural limb abnormalities, mental retardation and facial growth discrepancies. Main causes of death in such patients include pneumonia along with cardiac, respiratory an

Root canal configuration of deciduous mandibular first molars--an in vitro study.

Root canal morphology of deciduous mandibular first molar was studied using roentgenographic and decalcification and clearing methods. Two groups of 15 teeth were formed. In the roentgenographic group, roots of the teeth were separated from the crown at the level of CEJ. Cut roots of the teeth were radiographed from both mesiodistal and buccolingual directions using separate IOPA films. In the decalcification and clearing group, teeth were decalcified and made transparent. Dye was injected later. The roots of the teeth were examined under 10 times for number, curvature, types and additional fe

Prolonged feeding practice and its effects on developing dentition.

Muscular activity of the lips, cheeks, and the tongue are important factors, which not only guide the occlusal development but also affect the growth of the jaws. Bottle feeding has been known to cause a myriad of changes in the oro-facial development. But the adverse effects of feeding practices with respect to developing dentition has been a subject of controversy. Hence a study was designed with the aim and objectives to check the commonly adopted feeding practices in South Kanara, to compare the occlusion of 3- to 5-year-old children with breast feeding, bottle feeding or combination, and

Dentofacial changes and oral health status in mentally challenged children.

The study was carried out on 69 mentally challenged individuals. They were subjected to detailed clinical evaluation for dentofacial abnormalities and oral health status. Of the 69 mentally handicapped individuals 27 had Downs syndrome and 42 had cerebral palsy. Characteristic facial abnormalities were seen in children with Downs syndrome. In cerebral palsy, fracture maxillary anteriors were more evident. All the Downs syndrome cases had abnormal TMJ movements but in cerebral palsy only 35.7% of individuals had abnormal TMJ movements. In both the groups, submandibular lymph adenopathy was repo

Supernumerary teeth: a case report.

Supernumerary teeth are the teeth present in addition to the normal set of teeth. They may be single, multiple, unilateral or bilateral erupted or unerupted and in one or both jaws. Multiple supernumerary teeth are rare in individuals with no other associated diseases or syndromes. Our case presents with 12 supernumerary teeth in permanent dentition, of which six were erupted and six unerupted and a history of extraction of three teeth with no associated syndrome.

Oral lymphangioma: a case report.

Lymphangiomas are congenital malformations of lymphatic vessels filled with a clear protein-rich fluid containing few lymph cells. It can also occur in association with hemangioma. Large lymphangioma extending into the tissue spaces of neck is referred to as cystic hygroma. Herewith, we present a case of cystic hygroma associated with lymphangioma of tongue leading to macroglossia in a 5-year-old boy.

Management of temporo-mandibular joint ankylosis in growing children.

Although temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis is one of the most common pathologies afflicting the facial skeleton, it is also the most overlooked and under-managed problem in children. The TMJ forms the very cornerstone of cranio-facial integrity and hence its ankylosis in growing children adversely affects the growth and development of the jaws and occlusion. Impairment of speech, difficulty in mastication, poor oral hygiene, rampant caries and acute compromise of the airway pose a severe psychologic burden on the tender minds of children. The aim of this article is to present an overvie

Congenital granular cell lesion "congenital epulis"--report of a case.

Congenital granular cell lesion (CGCL) or "congenital epulis" is a rare lesion of newborn also known as Neuman's Tumor, which is benign in nature, mostly occurs as a single tumour but rarely as multiple. The histogenesis and natural clinical history of the lesion remains obscure. Even with the advent of modem histopathological techniques, it has not been possible to depict specific cellular features unique to this lesion. This lesion arises from mucosa of gingiva either from maxillary or mandibular alveolar ridge. The appearance of the lesion is most common in maxillary alveolar ridge than man

Secondary bone grafting in cleft lip and palate with eruption of tooth into the graft: a case report.

Secondary bone grafting in cleft lip and palate patients is performed preferably before the eruption of permanent canine in order to provide adequate periodontal support for eruption and preservation of the teeth adjacent to the cleft. Presented here with is a case of unilateral cleft lip and palate, which was followed up from birth to 15 years of age. The role of an orthodontist in the team approach for management of such anomalies is described. Also discussed in detail is the entire range of treatment procedures the child underwent, especially the role of secondary bone grafting.

Canine ectopia: report of two cases.

Transmigration of mandibular canine is a rare elusive phenomenon described in dental literature. The eruption of such transmigrated canines is even rarer. Two rare cases one of midline mandibular canine and the other of transmigrated mandibular canine across the midline and erupted distal to the opposite lateral incisor are presented. The transmigrated canine maintained its nerve supply from the original site. It is suggested that on routine evaluation of orthopantomograms when the dentist finds an excessive mesial inclination of the unerupted mandibular canine at 8-9 years associated with pro

Familial occurence of mesiodens--a case report.

Molariform supernumerary teeth in the maxillary central incisor area are uncommon. This article reports the presence of a molariform mesiodens in daughter and a conical mesiodens in father. Detailed investigation into family history of patients with mesiodens is needed. Though the etiology of this dental anomaly remains unclear, genetics as a key factor in the development of supernumerary teeth is highlighted.
