Does slice thickness affect diagnostic performance of 64-slice CT coronary angiography in stable and unstable angina patients with a positive calcium score?

BACKGROUND: Coronary calcification can lead to over-estimation of the degree of coronary stenosis. PURPOSE: To evaluate whether thinner reconstruction thickness improves the diagnostic performance of 64-slice CT coronary angiography (CTCA) in angina patients with a positive calcium score. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We selected 20 scans from a clinical study comparing CTCA to conventional coronary angiography (CCA) in stable and unstable angina patients based on a low number of motion artifacts and a positive calcium score. All images were acquired at 64 x 0.625 mm and each CTCA scan was reconstru

Assessment of hilar and extrahepatic bile duct cancer using multidetector CT: value of adding multiplanar reformations to standard axial images.

To retrospectively assess the value of multiplanar reformations (MPRs) compared with standard axial images in the assessment of hilar and extrahepatic bile duct cancer. Forty-eight patients with confirmed bile duct cancer were included as preoperative work-ups; all of these patients underwent contrast-enhanced multidetector CT consisting of axial and MPR images. Two radiologists independently assessed the axial images alone and the combined axial and MPR images in the coronal and sagittal planes for the presence of tumor, its extent, vascular involvement, and resectability. The results were co

Direct visualization of perforation sites in patients with a non-traumatic free pneumoperitoneum: added diagnostic value of thin transverse slices and coronal and sagittal reformations for multi-detector CT.

The incremental diagnostic value of adding 1.25-mm slices and coronal and sagittal reformatting to 5-mm axial reconstructions for direct visualization of the perforation site in patients with non-traumatic free pneumoperitoneum was assessed. Forty patients with non-traumatic bowel perforation and free pneumoperitoneum underwent computed tomography (CT). The perforation was gastroduodenal in 18 patients and involved the small or large bowel in 22 patients. Transverse scans were reconstructed with 5-mm thick sections at 5-mm intervals and 1.25-mm-thick sections at 1.25-mm intervals. The second d

Demonstration of vascular abnormalities compressing esophagus by MDCT: special focus on dysphagia lusoria.

PURPOSE: Dysphagia lusoria (DL) is described in the literature as difficulty in swallowing caused by vascular abnormalities. The most common cause is an aberrant right subclavian artery (SCA) which passes behind the esophagus and is also called arteria lusoria (AL). Our aim was to demonstrate the use of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) in the diagnosis of AL, as there is no comprehensive study investigating the role of MDCT in such cases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 38 consecutive patients, comprising of 23 females (61%) and 15 males (39%), who had extrinsic compression were incl

In vivo kinematic evaluation and design considerations related to high flexion in total knee arthroplasty.

In designing a posterior-stabilized total knee arthroplasty (TKA) it is preferable that when the cam engages the tibial spine the contact point of the cam move down the tibial spine. This provides greater stability in flexion by creating a greater jump distance and reduces the stress on the tibial spine. In order to eliminate edge loading of the femoral component on the posterior tibial articular surface, the posterior femoral condyles need to be extended. This provides an ideal femoral contact with the tibial articular surface during high flexion angles. To reduce extensor mechanism impingeme

Can CT predict the level of CSF block in tuberculous hydrocephalus?

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of obstructive hydrocephalus in children with tuberculous meningitis (TBM) depends on the level of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) block. Air-encephalography is regarded as the gold standard for differentiating communicating and non-communicating hydrocephalus. Since air-encephalography involves a lumbar puncture, it carries the risk of cerebral herniation. AIM. The aim of this study was to determine whether communicating and non-communicating hydrocephalus in TBM can be differentiated by means of cranial computerised tomography (CT). METHODS: A number of CT indices were

Simulated low-dose multi-detector computed tomography: spatial effects on surrogate parameters of bone strength at the proximal femur.

UNLABELLED: This study investigated simulated tube current reduction and sparse sampling for low-dose computed tomography (CT) regarding volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) and cortical bone thickness (Ct.Th) of the proximal femur. Sparse sampling with dose reductions of up to 90% may still allow extraction of bone strength parameters with clinically acceptable accuracy. INTRODUCTION: We aimed to investigate effects of CT with simulated lowered tube current and sparse sampling on trabecular and cortical vBMD as well as Ct.Th of the entire proximal femur, its subregions, and with detailed s

Correlation between transversal and orthogonal maximal diameters of abdominal aortic aneurysms and alternative rupture risk predictors.

PURPOSE: There is no standard for measuring maximal diameter (Dmax) of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) from computer tomography (CT) images although differences between Dmax evaluated from transversal (axialDmax) or orthogonal (orthoDmax) planes can be large especially for angulated AAAs. Therefore we investigated their correlations with alternative rupture risk indicators as peak wall stress (PWS) and peak wall rupture risk (PWRR) to decide which Dmax is more relevant in AAA rupture risk assessment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The Dmax values were measured by a trained radiologist from 70 collecte

Usefulness of Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography/Computed Tomography Fusion-Hybrid Imaging to Evaluate Coronary Artery Disorders in Patients with a History of Kawasaki Disease.

BACKGROUND: The coronary arterial lesions of Kawasaki disease are mainly dilative lesions, aneurysms, and stenotic lesions formed before, after, and between aneurysms; these lesions develop in multiple branches resulting in complex coronary hemodynamics. Diagnosis of myocardial ischemia and infarction and evaluation of the culprit coronary arteries and regions is critical to evaluating the treatment and prognosis of patients. This study used hybrid imaging, in which multidetector computed tomographic (CT) images for coronary CT angiography (CCTA) and stress myocardial perfusion single-photon e

Does slice thickness matter? Diagnostic accuracy of CT-derived fractional flow reserve (CT-FFR) compared with invasive FFR.

BACKGROUND: CT-derived fractional flow reserve (CT-FFR) has become a routine clinical tool with high accuracy and proven impact on outcome. However, the magnitude by which CT-specific reconstruction parameters influence the accuracy of CT-FFR in comparison to invasive FFR remains to be fully explored. We evaluated the influence of reconstructed slice thickness in coronary CT angiography (CCTA) on the accuracy of CT-FFR in comparison to invasively measured FFR in patients with suspected CAD. METHODS: A cohort of 50 consecutive patients (mean age 66 ± 9 years) in whom dual source CCTA had been

Diffusion tensor imaging in cubital tunnel syndrome.

Cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS) is the 2nd most common compressive neuropathy. To improve both diagnosis and the selection of patients for surgery, there is a pressing need to develop a reliable and objective test of ulnar nerve 'health'. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) characterises tissue microstructure and may identify differences in the normal ulnar from those affected by CuTS. The aim of this study was to compare the DTI metrics from the ulnar nerves of healthy (asymptomatic) adults and patients with CuTS awaiting surgery. DTI was acquired at 3.0 T using single-shot echo-planar imaging (55

A large-scale diffusion imaging study of tinnitus and hearing loss.

Subjective, chronic tinnitus, the perception of sound in the absence of an external source, commonly occurs with many comorbidities, making it a difficult condition to study. Hearing loss, often believed to be the driver for tinnitus, is perhaps one of the most significant comorbidities. In the present study, white matter correlates of tinnitus and hearing loss were examined. Diffusion imaging data were collected from 96 participants-43 with tinnitus and hearing loss (TINHL), 17 with tinnitus and normal hearing thresholds (TINNH), 17 controls with hearing loss (CONHL) and 19 controls with norm
