Hantaviruses are enveloped RNA viruses and members of the Bunyaviridae family. They are transmitted from various rodent hosts by inhalation of infected urine, saliva or faeces. The method for the long-term (3 years) prognostication of epizootic activity of plague is proposed. The method is based on the concept of the cyclic character of epizootics as the result of the superposition of a multitude of periodic components on the assumption that the duration of the periods takes the form of a row of prime consecutive numbers. This method was approbated in 25 areas of the Kyzyl Kum autonomous focus of plague.

Mercury and selenium concentrations were positively correlated in liver tissue of beaver, raccoon and otter from an undisturbed watershed in south central Ontario. Selenium accumulation in piscivorous mammals may represent a protective mechanism against methylmercury toxicity to animals exposed to high mercury levels in their diet. This paper also reports the levels of several other metals in tissues of three wild fur-bearing mammal species.

Arbovirus investigation in Jamaica was undertaken between 1960 and 1975. Serological studies showed that antibodies to dengue type virus and St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLE) were prevalent throughout the island for several years. In urban communities, the incidence of dengue antibody was higher than for SLE; however, in children under 10 years of age antibody to both viruses was rarely present. Its pathogenesis, spread and effect on the course of history from biblical times until the seventeenth century is traced with a detailed review of the origins of the Black Death.
