Prevalence, species composition, and associated factors of coccidiosis among domestic ruminants in Ethiopia: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Coccidiosis is a significant parasitic disease that affects the productivity and health of domestic ruminants worldwide. Although coccidiosis is one of the major causes of economic loss in ruminant farming, there is a lack of comprehensive evidence on the epidemiology of the disease in Ethiopia. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis were designed to comprehensively analyze the pooled prevalence of coccidiosis and associated risk factors with identified Eimeria species in domestic ruminants in Ethiopia. Following the PRISMA guidelines, literature searches were conducted in PubMed,…

Seroprevalence of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus Infection in Humans and Domestic Ruminants, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) was first isolated in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in 1956. To date, only 3 spor … fic antibodies. The seroprevalence of CCHFV infection in humans was 4.4% (55/1,239) and in domestic ruminants was 28.9% (322/1,114). High seroprevalences tended to correlate with increased age, specific climate conditions (e.g., tropical monsoon) and vegetation (e.g., mountain savanna) types, and higher elevation (>600 m). Our findings suggest that CCHFV ac …

Seroprevalence of Q-fever among domestic ruminants, humans and ticks in Ethiopia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Q fever is a neglected zoonotic disease that poses a significant threat to the economy, animal health, and public health sectors worldwide, particularly in developing countries such as Ethiopia. In Ethiopia, where livestock production is the primary source of livelihood and food security for many communities, the implications of Q fever are particularly concerning. Despite its importance as a health issue for both animals and humans, there is insufficient national-level consolidated evidence regarding the burden of Q fever in ticks, domestic ruminants, and humans in Ethiopia. Therefore, this m…

Ebola and Marburg viruses IgG detections in small ruminants and dogs from villages within outbreak areas in Gabon.

The Ebola virus (EBOV) and Marburg virus (MARV) have been in circulation in Africa for several decades and are the cause of numerous outbreaks. There has been very little research on the role of domestic animals in their transmission to humans, but studies have only been conducted in dogs and pigs where relatively high levels of IgG was detected. These levels suggest that ruminants, which have not been studied, should also be investigated. This study aims at evaluating the circulation of MARV and EBOV in dogs, sheep and goats and to assess their exposure to these two viruses. Between November …

Brucellosis seropositivity and risk factors in small ruminants and livestock workers: A cross-sectional study in Punjab, Pakistan.

Brucellosis is a major zoonotic disease worldwide. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the seropositive proportion of brucellosis and identify associated risk factors in small ruminants (sheep and goats) and livestock workers in Punjab, Pakistan. A total of 1783 blood samples were collected from unvaccinated sheep and goats across 219 flocks, along with 122 blood samples from occupationally exposed humans using convenience sampling of villages and flocks. Serum samples were tested using a commercial indirect-ELISA kit. Overall, 2.0 % of animals were seropositive, 9.1 % of flocks had …

Mucosal Immunity of Major Gastrointestinal Nematode Infections in Small Ruminants Can Be Harnessed to Develop New Prevention Strategies.

Gastrointestinal parasitic nematode (GIN) infections are the cause of severe losses to farmers in countries where small ruminants such as sheep and goat are the mainstay of livestock holdings. There is a need to develop effective and easy-to-administer anti-parasite vaccines in areas where anthelmintic resistance is rapidly rising due to the inefficient use of drugs currently available. In this review, we describe the most prevalent and economically significant group of GIN infections that infect small ruminants and the immune responses that occur in the host during infection with an emphasis …

The detrimental impact of high environmental temperature on physiological response, growth, milk production, and reproductive efficiency of ruminants.

The optimal environments for ruminants are air temperatures between 13 and 20 °C, winds between 5 and 18 km/h, humidity levels between 55 and 65%, and a moderate amount of sunlight. In tropical and subtropical regions, climate is the top factor restricting animal growth and reproductive efficiency. The digestive system, blood biochemical components, and hormones all go through a range of physiological changes at high temperatures. Ruminant animals respond to heat stress by drinking more water, breathing more quickly, panting, and raising their rectal temperatures while reducing their activity …

In vitro and in vivo analyses of co-infections with peste des petits ruminants and capripox vaccine strains.

BACKGROUND: Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) and goat pox (GTP) are two devastating animal epidemic diseases that affect small ruminants. Vaccination is one of the most important measures to prevent and control these two severe infectious diseases. METHODS: In this study, we vaccinated sheep with PPR and POX vaccines to compare the changes in the antibody levels between animals vaccinated with PPRV and POX vaccines alone and those co-infected with both vaccines simultaneously. The cell infection model was used to explore the interference mechanism between the vaccines in vitro. The antibody l…

Cultivating oyster mushrooms on red grape pomace waste enhances potential nutritional value of the spent substrate for ruminants.

The use of red grape pomace (GP; Vitis vinifera L. var. Shiraz) as a source of beneficial bioactive compounds in ruminant diets is limited by high levels of indigestible compounds in the grape skin matrix. This problem demands innovative, inexpensive, and easy-to-use strategies that improve the digestibility of GP. The bioconversion of GP using edible oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) is one such strategy that has not been previously explored. Therefore, this study evaluated the effect of cultivating oyster mushrooms on GP on chemical composition and in vitro ruminal fermentation paramete

Seroprevalence of brucellosis in small ruminants and related risk behaviours among humans in different husbandry systems in Mali.

Mali has a high pastoral potential with diverse coexisting production systems ranging from traditional (nomadic, transhumant, sedentary) to commercial (fattening and dairy production) production systems. Each of those systems is characterised by close interactions between animals and humans, increasing the potential risk of transmission of zoonotic diseases. The nature of contact network suggests that the risks may vary according to species, production systems and behaviors. However, the study of the link between small ruminants and zoonotic diseases has received limited attention in Mali. The…

Epidemiology and Associated Risk Factors for Brucellosis in Small Ruminants Kept at Institutional Livestock Farms in Punjab, Pakistan.

Brucellosis is reportedly endemic in ruminants in Pakistan. Both Brucella abortus and B. melitensis infections have been decumented in domestic animals and humans in the country. This study aimed to identify the burden of anti-Brucella antibodies in small ruminants as well as associated potential risk factors with its occurrence at nine institutional livestock farms in Punjab, Pakistan. The sera collected from equal number of sheep and goats (500 from each species) were screened by indirect-ELISA for anti-smooth-Brucella antibodies followed by a serial detection by real-time PCR. Overall, 5.1%…

Autophagy induction by the pathogen receptor NECTIN4 and sustained autophagy contribute to peste des petits ruminants virus infectivity.

Macroautophagy/autophagy is an essential cellular response in the fight against intracellular pathogens. Although some viruses can escape from or utilize autophagy to ensure their own replication, the responses of autophagy pathways to viral invasion remain poorly documented. Here, we show that peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) infection induces successive autophagic signalling in host cells via distinct and uncoupled molecular pathways. Immediately upon invasion, PPRV induced a first transient wave of autophagy via a mechanism involving the cellular pathogen receptor NECTIN4 and an AKT-…

Digesta passage in nondomestic ruminants: Separation mechanisms in 'moose-type' and 'cattle-type' species, and seemingly atypical browsers.

Ruminants have been classified as having a 'moose-type' or 'cattle-type' digestive physiology. 'Cattle-type' ruminants have a clear difference in the mean retention time (MRT) of fluid vs. small particles in the reticulorumen (RR), with a high 'selectivity factor' (SF = MRTparticle/ MRTfluid, >1.80), and are typically grazers and intermediate feeders. 'Moose-type' ruminants have lower SF (<1.80), possibly because of defensive salivary proteins that constrain amounts of (high-viscosity) saliva, and are typically restricted to browsing. To further contribute to testing this physiology-diet corre…
