Numerous studies have demonstrated that combat-exposed military veterans are at risk for numerous psychiatric disorders and rates of comorbid mental health and substance use disorders are high. Veterans wounded in combat are a particularly high-risk group of military veterans, however treatment services are often underutilized among this group and it is unclear whether an online treatment program that targets emotional and physical distress (including mental health symptoms and substance use disorders) would be appealing to Veterans wounded in combat. The goal of the current study was to condu

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is an adult-onset genetic neurodegenerative condition associated with cognitive decline, motor impairments, and emotional difficulties. Anxiety affects up to 71% of HD gene expansion carriers (i.e., those with the version of the gene that causes HD) and can negatively impact quality of life, worsen other HD symptoms, and increase suicide risk. Therefore, helping people with their anxiety should be a clinical priority. A significant evidence base now exists for low-cost talking therapies for anxiety, such as guided self-help, and with people with other neur

The Tree of Life group (Ncube, 2006) was designed to help children, young people (CYP), and adults who have experienced hard times or trauma to build resilience, restore hope, and connect with their strengths and social histories. A small number of publications have demonstrated a positive impact with CYP with long-term medical conditions (LTCs) (e.g., Casdagli et al., 2017) who are more likely to experience psychosocial challenges. In the context of increasing workforce pressures, the current study aimed to test if the positive results from previous studies could be replicated (1) with CYP's

While behavioral interventions can improve blood pressure (BP) in individuals with hypertension, getting such services to people who could benefit remains difficult. Workplace programs have potential as dissemination vehicles. The objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of a standardized stress management program delivered in groups at the workplace for reducing BP compared with enhanced usual care. This randomized controlled trial studied 92 urban medical center employees with hypertension randomized into two groups. The intervention was a 10-week group workshop on cognitive-behavioral cop

Monkeypox virus (MPXV), a close relative of Variola virus, is a zoonotic virus with an unknown reservoir. Interaction with infected wildlife, bites from peri-domestic animals, and bushmeat hunting are hypothesized routes of infection from wildlife to humans. Using a Risk Questionnaire, performed in monkeypox-affected areas of rural Democratic Republic of the Congo, we describe the lifestyles and demographics associated with presumptive risk factors for MPXV infection. We generated two indices to assess risk: Household Materials Index (HMI), a proxy for socioeconomic status of households and Ri

BACKGROUND: Residents lack confidence caring for children with severe neurological impairment (SNI). The novel personal history tool, SHINE (Self, Happy, Ill, Names, and Extra), was codeveloped by families and residents to strengthen residents' confidence in connecting with children with SNI and their families.
OBJECTIVES: To describe SHINE's use among residents and its impact on residents' burnout, meaningful work, and confidence in caring for children with SNI.
METHODS: Residents at an academic children's hospital in the United States received small-group teaching on the use of SHINE. Part

Although complete street policies are proliferating, little is known about how nearby residents perceive and act on their new active transportation opportunities. We survey the same neighborhood residents before and after they receive a new complete street renovation with five new light rail stops. We compare Time-1 expectations to use rail with Time-2 evidence of rail use, based on both self-reported and objective GPS/accelerometer measures of ridership. We examine neighborhood perceptions of four groups, created by combining Time-1 expectations to ride with Time-2 ridership: No expect/no rid

OBJECTIVE: Despite recent interest in peer support workers in recovery-oriented services, little is known about how helping behaviors may affect recovery from severe mental illness outside of formal peer support roles. The current study is a mixed-methods approach to understanding naturalistic helping behaviors and their relationship with recovery outcomes among persons with serious mental illness.
METHODS: Forty-six participants with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders completed a narrative interview and standardized measures of recovery, symptoms, hope, patient activation, quality of life, med

Accurate assessment of substance use is essential in public health, clinical, and research settings. While self-reports are widely used, they are prone to biases such as social desirability and recall errors. Objective biological measures, such as hair toxicology, offer a longer detection window and may improve data validity. This study examined the concordance between self-reported substance use and hair toxicology results, with a particular focus on cannabis. It also explored the prevalence and predictors of underreporting, and the relationship between cannabis use patterns and THC detection

INTRODUCTION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, first responders were identified as a high-risk group for developing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression, which are commonly associated with negative thoughts about oneself. This may pose risk to perceptions of work self-efficacy, an integral component of employee well-being and occupational functioning. In line with the Job Demands-Resources Model (Demerouti et al., 2001), the present study examined whether the degree to which first responders' perceived career calling (i.e., a "summons" to work) served as a protective f

We report a double-crossover study to assess the impact of self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) on the glycemic control of children with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) on a conventional therapeutic regimen. Sixteen children were assigned to one of two groups--group A, period 1 (wk 1-13): urine testing plus SMBG; period 2 (wk 14-26): urine testing only; group B, period 1: urine only; period 2: urine testing plus SMBG. Frequent telephone contact was maintained throughout to help optimize insulin dose adjustment. At the outset, the two groups were similar in age, diabetes duration,

INTRODUCTION: Haptic virtual reality simulation is increasingly used in dental education as a complementary tool for preclinical training. In oral implantology, where implant placement requires precise control of depth, angulation, and spatial positioning, haptic simulation may help students acquire technical skills in a safe and repeatable environment. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of haptic simulation in undergraduate implantology training by comparing implant placement accuracy, procedural time, student satisfaction, motivation, and self-perceived improvement across d

BACKGROUND: The onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus can be prevented or delayed by lifestyle changes. Communication technologies such as a mobile phone can be used as a means of delivering these lifestyle changes.
OBJECTIVES: The purposes of this analysis were to explore applicability of potential components of a mobile phone-based healthy lifestyle program and to understand motivators and barriers to continued engagement in a mobile phone healthy lifestyle program.
METHODS: We conducted 6 focus groups (4 female and 2 male groups) in May and June 2010 with 35 focus group participants. The qual

OBJECTIVE: Dysfunction in positive affect is a defining symptom of bipolar I disorder (BD), both during and between mood episodes. We hypothesize that helping people with BD learn skills to create balance in their affective experiences by engaging in strategies that increase low activation positive emotion (LAP; e.g., relaxation) could help to improve well-being during periods of symptom remission. We discuss the development and preliminary outcomes of a positive emotion regulation (PER) group treatment for people with BD, designed as a supplement to pharmacological treatment.

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is one of the most common mental disorders among university students; however, many students go untreated due to treatment costs, stigma concerns, and limited access to trained mental health professionals. These barriers are heightened in universities in India, where there are scant mental health care services and severe stigma surrounding help seeking.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of Internet-based, or "online," cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based unguided and guided self-help interventions (using the
