In order to quantify frequency, localisation and consequences of missed musculoskeletal injuries in multiple injured patients, 323 cases were retrospectively analyzed. 40 primarily missed injuries were found, 12 of them in patients, who had been transferred from another hospital. This rate of 12.4% corresponds with the literature. Four regions are mainly affected: 1. the cervical spine, especially the cervicothoracic transition, 2. the shoulder, 3. the ligaments of the knee especially with femur or tibia fractures at the same time, and 4. the forefoot. About half of the primary missed injuries

BACKGROUND: Posterior shoulder dislocations are rare and frequently misdiagnosed injuries that can lead to significant functional impairment if treatment is delayed. Chronic instability, restricted range of motion, and progressive degenerative changes often develop in neglected cases.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a clinical case of a patient with bilateral posterior shoulder dislocations diagnosed 12 months after an epileptic seizure. The patient underwent multiple surgical interventions, including bilateral open reduction and defect reconstruction using custom implants. Persistent pain and l

BACKGROUND: Manual wheelchair propulsion is associated with overuse injuries of the shoulder. Reaction force redirection relative to upper extremity segments was hypothesized as a means to redistribute mechanical load imposed on the upper extremity without decrements in wheelchair propulsion performance.
METHODS: Two individuals performed wheelchair propulsion under simulated inclined (graded) conditions using self-selected control strategies. Upper extremity kinematics and reaction forces applied to the wheel were quantified and used as input into an experiment-based multi-link inverse dynam

A 5-year-old girl presented with an inability to abduct her left shoulder and flex her left elbow following a fall 1.5 months earlier. Electrodiagnostic studies were suggestive of a partial upper trunk brachial plexus injury. The child was advised to attend monthly follow-up visits with regular physiotherapy and nerve stimulation. At 3 months after injury, elbow flexion had recovered completely, and shoulder abduction had improved to 30°. After an additional month of observation without further clinical improvement in shoulder abduction, a nerve-to-triceps transfer to the axillary nerve was pl

Clinical assessment of the patient with shoulder symptoms can usually localize the cause to one of a few syndromes, each associated with specific imaging questions. MRI is used as the primary form of investigation for recurrent dislocation, SLAP lesions and PSI, as well as articular cartilage, synovial disease, tumours and infection. Ultrasound plays the leading role in impingement, acromioclavicular disease, dynamic assessment and guided therapy. Both techniques are reported to play a role in adhesive capsulitis. In our hospital, approximately four times as many shoulder ultrasound examinatio

Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty was developed in the late 1980s for elderly patients with rotator cuff arthropathy. Several biomechanical advantages of the reverse shoulder arthroplasty result in improved deltoid function, which improves shoulder motion and function compared to other types of shoulder arthroplasty. The main indication for the reverse prosthesis is painful rotator cuff tear arthropathy. The indications for reverse shoulder arthroplasty have continued to expand since it was first performed in the United States in 2004. Although the results of reverse total shoulder arthropla

The angle and position of the scapular glenoid are important in shoulder mechanics, the interpretation of diseases, and planning shoulder replacement surgery. In total shoulder replacement, understanding the bony parameters of the glenoid is also of considerable guiding significance for designing implant size and improving material adaptability. To compare glenoid parameters measured from skeletal scapula specimens with those measured by 3D modeling of CT scanning images, analyze correlations between these data, and draw conclusions to guide clinical treatment of shoulder joint injury and tota

Ultrasound is an established modality for shoulder evaluation, being accurate, low cost and radiation free. Different pathological conditions can be diagnosed using ultrasound and can be treated using ultrasound guidance, such as degenerative, traumatic or inflammatory diseases. Subacromial-subdeltoid bursitis is the most common finding on ultrasound evaluation for painful shoulder. Therapeutic injections of corticosteroids are helpful to reduce inflammation and pain. Calcific tendinopathy of rotator cuff affects up to 20% of painful shoulders. Ultrasound-guided treatment may be performed with

Multidirectional shoulder instability (MDI) is characterized by symptomatic instability in at least two directions, often with a global hyperlaxity. The etiology is mostly atraumatic, with an acquired or congenital enlarged capsular volume or redundancy. Muscular imbalances and pathologic patterns of muscle recruitment and motion are also common findings. Traumatic onset of MDI is rare, although capsulolabral lesions can be found during surgery. Therapy aims at a normalization of muscle balance/weakness and motion patterns. If conservative treatment fails, arthroscopic capsular plication techn

A number of abnormalities of the shoulder joint can cause pain or dysfunction. Imaging of this complex joint is demanding. Standard radiographs are considered to represent the basis of all imaging. For more detailed diagnoses, especially concerning soft tissue, more advanced imaging methods are required. Standard arthrography (without combination with either CT or MRI) is rarely indicated anymore. Bone scintigraphy is another imaging method with limited use in shoulder joint abnormalities (neoplasm, infection, occult fracture). Sonography is useful in abnormalities of the rotator cuff and the

UNLABELLED: Treatment of pan-brachial plexus injuries has evolved significantly over the past 2 decades, with refinement and introduction of new surgical techniques, particularly free functional muscle transfer. The extent to which contemporary brachial plexus surgeons utilize various techniques as part of their treatment algorithm for pan-plexus injuries and the rationale underlying these choices remain largely unknown.
METHODS: A case scenario was posed to 12 brachial plexus surgeons during semi-structured qualitative interviews. The case involved a young patient presenting 6 weeks after a

Shoulder entrapment during delivery is a true obstetric emergency that can result in significant maternal and infant trauma. Fetal macrosomia, maternal obesity, maternal diabetes and prolonged second stage of labor are associated risk factors. Infant complications of shoulder dystocia include traumatic brachial plexus injury, humeral fracture, clavicular fracture and severe birth asphyxia. With fetal shoulder entrapment, the mother may have significant hemorrhage, fourth-degree perineal lacerations and endometritis. Maneuvers to release the shoulder include closed-fist suprapubic pressure, dow

Posterior shoulder dislocation is an uncommon condition, accounting for a minority of shoulder instability cases. It is more frequently encountered in high-level athletes and is often missed at initial presentation, which can lead to chronic instability and recurrent dislocations. Predisposing factors include congenital anatomical variations, capsular laxity, and acquired injuries such as trauma or tetanic muscle contractions during seizures or electrical shocks. Management strategies are broadly divided into conservative and surgical approaches. Nonoperative treatment focuses on strengthening
