Calcification of Bruch's membrane in angioid streaks with homozygous sickle cell disease.

Histochemical and light and electron microscopic studies of two eyes of a patient with homozygous sickle cell disease and angioid streaks demonstrated heavy calcification and breaks in Bruch's membrane. We were unable to demonstrate iron deposition by histochemical techniques or transmission electron microscopy. These studies suggest that calcification rather than iron deposition is the major factor leading to brittleness of Bruch's membrane in patients with hemolytic anemia and angioid streaks.

The molecular species composition of phosphatidylcholine affects cellular properties in normal and sickle erythrocytes.

The phosphatidylcholine specific transfer protein (PCTP) from bovine liver was used to retailor the molecular species composition of phosphatidylcholine (PC) in the membrane of normal (AA) and sickleable (SS) human erythrocytes. Changes in molecular species composition of PC altered morphology as well as cellular deformability and stability as measured with ektacytometry. In normal cells, replacement of native PC with 1-palmitoyl,2-arachidonoyl PC (PAPC) resulted in a decrease in osmotic fragility with no change in hydration, whereas replacement with 1,2-dipalmitoyl PC (DPPC) led to an increas

Mitral valve replacement in a patient with sickle cell anaemia.

Cardiopulmonary bypass can be expected to cause problems in a patient with sickle cell anaemia (SCA) as such surgery is associated with various factors which may induce sickling and subsequent sickle cell crisis. This patient is only the second with SCA to have valve replacement performed, and is the seventh case reported in the English literature to have cardiopulmonary bypass surgery.

Complicated migraine in AS hemoglobinopathy.

Neurological manifestations have been rarely described in sickle cell trait carriers. Almost all the patients up to now reported are black and young of age. An adult white man is reported, with AS hemoglobinopathy, affected by complicated migraine, who developed acute occlusion of two middle cerebral artery branches, with persistent neurological deficit. The possible significance of this association is discussed.

[Drepanocytosis and navigation personnel].

In West and Central Africa one adult in 4 or 5 carries AS trait. This haemoglobin abnormality therefore underlines the question of aptitude … on the aptitude of TNP can only be envisaged after proving tests for placing the personnel carrying sickle cell trait in the context of airling work.

Role of the vitreous in the haemoglobinopathies.

The vitreous is felt to play a significant role in the development of advanced proliferative sickle retinopathy. This is particularly true in Stages 3 to 5 of the Goldberg classification. A comparison with the classification of proliferative diabetic retinopathy by Davis is presented. The role of vitrectomy in this disorder has been considered.

Contemporary Biology, Management, and Outcomes of Renal Medullary Carcinoma in Children and Adults: A Pediatric Surgical Oncology Research Collaborative Study.

BACKGROUND: Renal medullary carcinoma (RMC) is an aggressive tumor associated with sickle cell trait. Despite treatment advances for other rare renal tumors, RMC survival remains poor. We aimed to describe the contemporary management and survival of children and adults with RMC. PROCEDURE: In this multicenter retrospective cohort study, Pediatric Surgical Oncology Research Collaborative sites searched their databases for patients diagnosed with RMC (2000-2022). Descriptive statistics were calculated and survival analyses performed using Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression. RESULTS: Thirty-four p…

Hemoglobin polymerization in sickle cells studied by circular polarized light scattering.

We have studied intracellular polymerization of hemoglobin S in suspensions of small populations of sickle cells using circular polarized light scattering. We argue that the preferential scattering of right circular polarized light (as expressed by measurements of the S14 Mueller scattering matrix element) directly reflects the amount of polymer inside cells. This technique has made it possible to investigate the effect of oxygen tension, cell density and osmotic stress on intracellular hemoglobin polymerization. Using S14 to determine hemoglobin polymer, we show that the polymer increases wit

Determination of birth prevalence of sickle cell disease using point of care test HemotypeSC™ at Rundu Hospital, Namibia.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD), a noncommunicable disease, has the greatest burden in sub-Saharan Africa. The majority of children (5 … males. The median age of the participants was 23 h (Q1, Q3; 11; 33),) with an age range of 2-98 h. Sickle cell trait was present in 9.4% of the screened newborns, no homozygous disease was detected, and 90.6% had Hb AA. CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first to measure HbS gene carriage at birth using HemotypeSC point-of-care testing in Namibia. There was a moderat …

The Sickle Effect: The Silent Titan Affecting Glycated Hemoglobin Reliability.

Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is a popular invaluable tool in the diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes for red blood cells (RBCs) with a lifespan of 120 days; however, many factors, including hemoglobinopathies, affect its accuracy. Sickle cell trait, primarily a benign medical condition, is a point mutation in only one of two beta-globin genes on chromosome 11. We performed a traditional review to identify how the sickle cell trait (SCT) affects the interpretation of HbA1c and the further implications it may have on the diagnosis and management of Type 2 diabetes. A literature search was performed using Pub…

Extracellular hemin crisis triggers acute chest syndrome in sickle mice.

The prevention and treatment of acute chest syndrome (ACS) is a major clinical concern in sickle cell disease (SCD). However, the mechanism underlying the pathogenesis of ACS remains elusive. We tested the hypothesis that the hemolysis byproduct hemin elicits events that induce ACS. Infusion of a low dose of hemin caused acute intravascular hemolysis and autoamplification of extracellular hemin in transgenic sickle mice, but not in sickle-trait littermates. The sickle mice developed multiple symptoms typical of ACS and succumbed rapidly. Pharmacologic inhibition of TLR4 and hemopexin replaceme
