Psychophysiological correlates in male to female transsexuals studied with a P300 investigation.

BACKGROUND: Transsexualism is thought to be related to cortical processes reflecting a complex mosaic of biological, psychological and social/cultural information. Since the P300 component of event-related potentials is considered as an index of attentional processes, the present study focuses on auditory P300 elicited during a short memory test in male to female (MF) transsexuals, compared with that in healthy controls. METHOD: The P300 component was evaluated during the anticipatory period of a short memory test in 13 MF transsexuals who had a gender reassignment operation, at least 3 years

Understanding the treatment journey and experiences of knee osteoarthritis patients receiving standard care in Singapore: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: A treatment journey (TJ) outlines a patient’s needs, actions, and experiences when seeking treatment. In Singapore, the quality of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) care is suboptimal. Mapping the TJ of older KOA patients can identify gaps in care influencing treatment decision, experiences, timeliness, and effectiveness for optimizing care in Singapore. METHODS: This qualitative study was embedded in a larger qualitative study conducted in an urban, referral-based tertiary hospital in Singapore that evaluated and explored KOA patients’ treatment experiences of a randomized controlled tria

Effect of a Social Norm Email Feedback Program on the Unnecessary Prescription of Nimodipine in Ambulatory Care of Older Adults: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Nimodipine is a highly prescribed drug for the treatment of cognitive impairment and dementia in Argentina. There is little evidence to support the use of nimodipine for cognitive impairment and dementia. OBJECTIVE: To test the effectiveness of a behavioral intervention based on social norm feedback to reduce prescription of nimodipine for cognitive impairment in Argentina. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This pragmatic parallel-group randomized clinical trial included 2 arms with a 1:1 allocation ratio. General practitioner physicians in the national health care system for ol

Implementing an Integrated Pharmaceutical Management Information System for Antiretrovirals and Other Medicines: Lessons From Namibia.

The success of the Namibian government's "treatment for all" approach to control and stop the country's HIV epidemic is dependent on an uninterrupted supply of antiretrovirals (ARVs) for people living with HIV. The public health system in Namibia, however, was constrained by an inefficient paper-based pharmaceutical information system resulting in unreliable and inaccessible data, contributing to persistent stock-outs of ARVs and other essential pharmaceuticals. This article describes the incremental implementation of an integrated pharmaceutical management information system to provide timely

Long-Term Outcomes and Cost-Effectiveness of an Internet-Based Self-Help Intervention for Social Anxiety Disorder in University Students: Results of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is widespread among university students and is associated with high costs for the society. While unguided internet- and mobile-based interventions (IMIs) may have short-term effects in reducing SAD symptoms, evidence for their long-term efficacy and cost-effectiveness is still limited. The aim of this study is to examine the 6-month outcomes of an IMI for university students with SAD. Participants were recruited via mass mails sent to enrolled students and included if they were at least 18 years old, met the diagnostic criteria of SAD in a structured clinical inte

A developmental intergroup theory of social stereotypes and prejudice.

Developmental intergroup theory specifies the mechanisms and rules that govern the processes by which children single out groups as targets of stereotyping and prejudice, and by which children learn and construct both the characteristics (i.e., stereotypes) and affective responses (i.e., prejudices) that are associated with these groups in their culture. Specifically, we argue that children have a drive to understand their world, and that this drive is manifested in their tendency to classify natural and non-natural stimuli into categories, and to search the environment for cues about which of

Bridging the gap in sexuality and neuromuscular disorders: a scoping review of an overlooked but crucial topic.

INTRODUCTION: Neuromuscular disorders (NMDs) comprise a group of conditions affecting the muscles and/or the nerves controlling them, resulting in progressive muscle weakness. Beyond the physical limitations, NMDs can significantly impact quality of life (QoL), including sexuality. Sexuality, as defined by the World Health Organization, encompasses physical, psychological, and social dimensions. However, research exploring the multifaceted impact of NMDs on sexual well-being remains limited, despite the potential influence of physical impairments, psychological distress, and social stigma. Longitudinal associations of psychosocial factors and fear of falling in older adults: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Fear of falling (FOF) is a phenomenon prevalent among older adults associated with adverse outcomes, including reduced mental and physical health, decreased quality of life, and an overall reduction in social participation. Based on cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, recent reviews have provided information on the prevalence of FOF and its association with different health outcomes. To gain a deeper understanding of factors relevant to interventions to prevent or reduce FOF, this review goes beyond previous evidence syntheses by focusing on psychosocial factors that are long

"I am a person but I am not a person": experiences of women living with obstetric fistula in the central region of Malawi.

BACKGROUND: The consequences of living with obstetric fistula are multifaceted and very devastating for women, especially those living in poor resource settings. Due to uncontrollable leakages of urine and/or feces, the condition leaves women with peeling of skin on their private parts, and the wetness and smell subject them to stigmatization, ridicule, shame and social isolation. We sought to gain a deeper understanding of lived experiences of women with obstetric fistula in Malawi, in order to recommend interventions that would both prevent new cases of obstetric fistula as well as improve t

Epidemiology of Alzheimer's disease. Issues of etiology and validity.

This thesis concerns the epidemiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and some aspects of the validity of such studies. AD is a common and chronic dementing disorder among elderly people. Due to the lack of treatment and to the invalidating nature, the social impact of this disease is high in all the societies in which the proportion of elderly is increasing. Three studies on AD etiology have been performed. The first is a case-control study on early-onset AD and a wide range of putative risk factors. The cases were gathered from a clinical study on AD carried out in Italy. The information on the

Obese women's barriers to mammography and pap smear: the possible role of personality.

Obese women are at increased risk of developing and dying from cancer, but are less likely than nonobese women to receive cancer screening examinations. Our qualitative study explores obese women's barriers to Pap smears and mammograms in greater depth than previous research. We also seek to understand why some obese women undergo screening whereas others do not. A purposive sample of moderately to severely obese women over age 40 was recruited from community-based organizations, health clinics, and retail establishments. Semi-structured in-depth interviews (N = 33) informed by the Theory of C

The Effectiveness of Behavior Change Techniques Underpinning Psychological Interventions to Improve Glycemic Levels for Adults With Type 2 Diabetes: A Meta-Analysis.

UNLABELLED: An existing systematic review and meta-analysis found a significant reduction in glycemic levels for adults with type 2 diabetes who received a psychological intervention over control conditions. To help develop effective interventions in the future, there is a need to understand the active ingredients which underpin these psychological interventions. We conducted a secondary meta-analysis including 67 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reported in English. We reviewed the psychological intervention descriptions of the included studies of the existing review and extracted the beha

Mind-Body Therapy via Videoconferencing in Patients With Neurofibromatosis: Analyses of 1-Year Follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a rare genetic disorder associated with substantial deficits in quality of life (QoL). We have previously shown that in this population the Relaxation Response Resiliency Program for NF (3RP-NF) delivered via live videoconferencing is associated with sustained improvement in QoL from baseline through 6-month follow-up over and above an attention placebo control.. PURPOSE: To examine between- and within-group changes in QoL domains from baseline to 1-year follow-up and 6-month to 1-year follow-up. METHODS: We enrolled and randomized 63 adults with NF. Of

Social network distribution of syphilis self-testing among men who have sex with men in China: study protocol for a cluster randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) among men who have sex with men (MSM). Increasing syphilis testing is important to syphilis control. However, in low- and middle-income countries like China, syphilis testing rates remain low among MSM. We describe a randomized controlled trial protocol to examine the effectiveness of social network distribution approaches of syphilis self-testing among MSM in China. METHODS: We will recruit index and alter MSM. Indexes will be eligible if they: are born biologically male; aged 18 years or above; ever had sex with another m

Amplitude variability over trials in hemodynamic responses in adolescents with ADHD: The role of the anterior default mode network and the non-specific role of the striatum.

It has been suggested that intra-individual variability (IIV) in performance on attention and other cognitive tasks might be a cognitive endophenotype in individuals with ADHD. Despite robust IIV findings in behavioral data, only sparse data exist on how what type of brain dysfunction underlies variable response times. In this study, we asked whether ADHD IIV in reaction time on a commonly-used test of attention might be related to variation in hemodynamic responses (HRs) observed trial-to-trial. Based on previous studies linking IIV to regions within the "default mode" network (DMN), we predi

Vulnerability of women in southern Africa to infection with HIV: biological determinants and priority health sector interventions.

OBJECTIVE: To review biomedical determinants of women's vulnerability to infection with HIV and interventions to counter this, within the southern African context. RESULTS: Apart from number of exposures, if any, several factors influence the efficiency of HIV transmission during sex. Acute HIV infection, with extraordinarily high semen viral load, in conjunction with concurrent partnerships maximizes this efficiency. Delaying sexual debut and avoiding HIV exposure among biologically and socially vulnerable youth is critical. Reducing unintended pregnancies keeps girls in school and prevents

The association of depression and mortality in elderly persons: a case for multiple, independent pathways.

BACKGROUND: The evidence for an association between depression and mortality among community-dwelling elderly persons remains inconclusive, although it is well established for younger individuals. Extant studies suggest that this association weakens when adjusted for potential confounding factors, especially functional impairment. A cohort of elderly subjects followed for 3 years was analyzed to determine the association of depression and 3-year mortality, controlling for the major known risk factors for mortality in the elderly population. METHODS: Information on depression (CES-D scores), m
