The anatomical relationships of the middle ear, the mastoid air cells, the temporal bone and intracranial structures can lead to invasive infections. Acute mastoiditis is the most common intratemporal complication of acute otitis media. Timely management includes antimicrobial therapy, imaging including ultrasound and/or computed tomography, surgical consultation and intervention. There are insufficient data to provide an evidence-based diagnostic tool for acute mastoiditis. Clinical, laboratory and microbiological differences between children with simple and complicated mastoiditis will be ex

A 10-year-old boy presented with a complaint of a left-sided nasal obstruction with an associated foul-smelling discharge. Physical examination and anterior rhinoscopy revealed that a whitish, friable mass had completely filled the left nasal cavity. On computed tomography, a soft-tissue mass was seen filling the cavity and extending to the paranasal sinuses with bone erosion. A biopsy of the mass suggested that it represented a cholesteatoma. The lesion was removed via nasal endoscopy, and histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of a cholesteatoma. No recurrence was noted during 6 months of fo

The perivascular epithelioid cell family of tumors includes angiomyolipoma, clear cell "sugar" tumor of the lung, lymphangioleiomyomatosis, and clear cell myomelanocytic tumor of the falciform ligament/ligamentum teres. Less frequently, perivascular epithelioid cell tumors arise in various other locations throughout the body including soft tissue, bone, and visceral organs. We report a case of a 23-year-old man who presented with 2-month history of frequent micturition and odynuria. Based on clinical examination, ultrasound computed tomography imaging, surgical operation, and histopathologic s

Mycetoma is a chronic granulomatous infection. Lower extremities are commonly involved. A 20-year-old male came with complaints of multiple sinuses on scalp, left eyelid swelling with a sinus and dystopia, since one year. On examination there was relative proptosis in left eye of 2 mm. Computed tomography scan showed soft tissue swelling of the pre-septal area of the left upper eyelid with orbital involvement. Magnetic resonance imaging showed increased left orbital volume and evident dystopia. Microbiology testing of the erosive scalp and lid lesions showed genus Nocardia, suggestive of actin

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is an invasive fungal sinusitis with a high mortality rate, especially in immunocompromised patients. A 70-year-old woman, with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus, presented with a one-month history of non-specific headaches associated with progressive swelling of her left eye. Computed tomography of the brain and orbits showed the extensive involvement of bilateral intranasal sinuses, orbits, extraocular muscle and soft tissues. The diagnosis of invasive mucormycosis was confirmed from a tissue biopsy taken from the internasal septum. Despite the extensive mucorm

Primary tumors of the tracheobronchial tree are rare, and benign tumors are even rarer. Patients with tracheobronchial tumors are at times wrongly diagnosed with asthma. A 77-year-old woman presented to our Emergency Department with increasing dyspnea and stridor. She had been treated for bronchial asthma for the last 7 years. Due to the presence of the stridor, a cervical soft tissue computed tomography scan was performed. It revealed a tracheal polyp at the level of the thyroidal isthmus. Polyp excision with rigid bronchoscopy was performed by a thoracic surgeon. This case demonstrates that

Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD) is a rare primary immunodeficiency disease. Although the most affected patients are diagnosed in childhood, there are several reports of the disease presenting in adult patients. Here we present a 40 years old man who was admitted in hospital due to respiratory symptoms and ground glass pattern in high resolution computed tomography of lung. Open lung biopsy revealed lymphocytic bronchiolitis. Because of past medical history of granulomatous lesion in lung and recurrent abscesses of skin and soft tissue, NBT test was conducted which its result revealed that

The radiologists will be frequently consulted to evaluate a variety of maxillomandibular lesions or may incidentally encounter these lesions on routine plain films, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR) studies. This article provides the reader a diagnostic approach pattern when confronted with an unknown jaw lesion. The radiologic analysis for differential diagnosis primarily depends on specific cardinal and additional radiographic criteria on plain film studies. Cardinal radiographic criteria include the density of the lesion and the location with regard to the adjacent tooth s

A case of nonspecific cystic degeneration complicating fibrous dysplasia of the mandible is presented. This condition is extremely rare in the jaw bones. The patient had a painless swelling of the right face measuring 10 cm in diameter, and there was no history of trauma. Radiographs showed a poorly defined, "ground glass" radiopaque lesion; a central well-defined cyst was confirmed by means of computed tomography. During surgery, a large cystic cavity with surrounding, soft fibrous bone that merged with the cortex was observed. Histologic examination showed a large non-epithelial-lined cystic

Ten subjects known to suffer from heavy snoring but not obstructive sleep apnoea were studied using the technique of sleep nasendoscopy. The mechanism of snoring was noted for each and sound recordings of the snoring noise were made. Six subjects were observed to snore using their soft palate only, three snored using only their tongue base and one snored using a combination of palate and tongue base. The sound recordings were subjected to computer analysis of waveform and frequency. Palatal flutter snoring and tongue base snoring appear to have distinct waveform and frequency patterns which al

Computed tomography allows today to reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) images from axial scans. The authors report their experience in cranio-facial pathology achieved in two Departments of Radiology (University of Trieste, Italy and University of Stanford, California). 3D images have been realized using two different softwares, one of which allows to reconstruct both soft tissue and bone structures. The applications in maxillo-facial traumas, cranio-facial malformations and head tumours are discussed. 3D images turned out to be very useful for the optimal visualization and for the spatial dem

Nineteen patients with orbital floor fractures were examined and underwent computed tomography of both orbits. By evaluating the amount of orbital expansion and soft tissue herniation, we were able to identify a group of patients at high risk for developing enophthalmos (3/7 in the group with the largest amount vs. 0/7 and 0/5 in the two other groups). By studying the appearance of the inferior rectus muscle, we were also able to identify a group of patients at high risk for developing persistent diplopia (5/5 with entrapped muscles, 0/2 with hooked muscles and 0/12 of patients with free infer

Proptosis of the left eye developed in a 51-year-old man with a long history of nasal polyposis. Displacement of the orbit was associated with a palpable mass superior and lateral to the orbit. Roentgenographic studies, including a sinus series, computed tomographic scan, and axial tomogram of the left orbit, showed a soft-tissue mass in the superolateral compartment of the left orbit and left frontal sinus, suggesting a mucocele. The surgical and pathological findings disclosed polyps of the frontal sinus invading the orbit through a dehiscence of the lateral orbital roof. To our knowledge, t

We have performed over 200 examinations in children with congenital dislocation of the hip during a 3-year period. From this experience, we conclude that computed tomography is useful in the evaluation of: (a) concentricity of closed reduction; (b) obstacles to closed reduction, such as infolding of the capsule, secondary to a tight iliopsoas tendon; (c) femoral torsion; (d) intraarticular obstacles contributing to persistent subluxation, such as (1) hypertrophy of the pulvinar, (2) intraarticular soft-tissue interposition, and (3) iatrogenic obstacles, such as metallic pins penetrating into t

Perineal-anal defects are difficult to manage because negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) commonly fails to achieve an airtight seal, and stool contamination hinders wound-bed preparation. Fecal diversion is often required, with a stoma typically created within the rectus abdominis muscle. When a rectus abdominis myocutaneous (RAM) flap is planned, the stoma and flap must be placed on opposite sides, making laterality planning essential. Assessment of the deep inferior epigastric artery (DIEA) patency is critical because vascular compromise may limit flap harvesting. Herein, we report a rar

An approximately 6-month-old domestic pigeon (Columba livia domestica) was presented for lethargy and an inability to perform its first molt. The pigeon was obese, had anatomical characteristics of a chick, including cere and plumage, and had a ventral coelomic soft tissue mass. Initial blood work was unremarkable. A computed tomographic scan confirmed excessive fat deposition in the coelom and a mass adherent to the liver. A fine-needle aspirate of the mass indicated fat accumulation. A thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) test was planned for this pigeon and 3 presumed euthyroid pigeons. Each p

Assessing the mechanical behavior of nano- and micron-scale particles with complex shapes is fundamental in drug delivery. Although different techniques are available to quantify the bulk stiffness in static conditions, there is still uncertainty in assessing particle deformability in dynamic conditions. Here, a microfluidic chip is designed, engineered, and validated as a platform to assess the mechanical behavior of fluid-borne particles. Specifically, potassium hydroxide (KOH) wet etching was used to realize a channel incorporating a series of micropillars (filtering modules) with different

History shows that the infectious disease (COVID-19) can stun the world quickly, causing massive losses to health, resulting in a profound impact on the lives of billions of people, from both a safety and an economic perspective, for controlling the COVID-19 pandemic. The best strategy is to provide early intervention to stop the spread of the disease. In general, Computer Tomography (CT) is used to detect tumors in pneumonia, lungs, tuberculosis, emphysema, or other pleura (the membrane covering the lungs) diseases. Disadvantages of CT imaging system are: inferior soft tissue contrast compare

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the incision type, with or without a coronally repositioning flap (CRF), on soft tissue healing and crestal bone remodeling after endodontic microsurgery (EMS).
METHODS: Clinical pictures and cone-beam computed tomography images from 47 patients (120 teeth) taken before surgery and at the follow-up appointment were included in this study. Clinical pictures were qualitatively evaluated by 2 endodontists for the gingival marginal level (GML) (recession, same position, or coronal root coverage), papillary height (same position/
