Interactions of horseradish peroxidase with propylthiouracil, thiouracil, propyluracil and uracil lead to the formation of complexes that exhibit different absorption spectra which can be attributed to the perturbation of peroxidase as the result of the drug-binding on a polar site in the protein. The equilibrium constants for the binding of Ni2+ to human serum transferrin in 0.01 M hepes containing 5 mM sodium bicarbonate at 25 degrees C and pH 7.4 have been measured. Circular dichroism spectra were obtained for ten scorpion neurotoxins (representing five species of scorpion) in order to provide an understanding of their relative conformations in solution. Different methods for the separation and identification of eighteen non-steroidal antirheumatics (non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs) and the application of these methods for systematic toxicological analysis are reviewed. A method for separating these compounds by high-performance liquid chromatography using an RP-18 column and mixtures of acetonitrile and acetate buffers as eluents is presented and the detectability of these substances with respect to their different UV maxima is discussed.

The strength of chromatic response elicited by a briefly-flashed monochromatic light, which varied in its exposure duration, was measured with the "transient cancellation method" in Experiment 1. It was found that the chromatic response of a test color depended on brightness of the test field, up to the exposures of 100-200 msec. Hundreds of drugs and other substances are excreted in urine. In a comprehensive drug screen, it is impossible to identify every detectable substance. In order to delineate the most commonly detected drugs, approximately 1000 urine specimens from geographically distributed clinical laboratories were analyzed for drug substances. Twenty-nine (29) clinical laboratories submitted up to 76 consecutive urine specimens found to be positive for substances other than nicotine and caffeine. The concentration of 25 major, minor and trace elements in human bile was determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Gallbladder bile was obtained during surgery from patients with cholesterol gallstones, pigment stones and with no biliary tract abnormalities (controls). Comparison of the concentration of elements (microgram per gram of solids) did not reveal any significant differences among the three patient groups. The in vitro nucleation time was not related to the concentration of any element measured.

The infrared (IR) spectra of KBr pellet preparations of tetracycline (TC) complexes with hydroxyapatite (HA) indicated that the binding of the antibiotic to bone mineral can occur independently at each of two ligands. The shifts in the IR spectrum occur for the keto-enol ligand of rings B and C and for the tricarbonylmethane grouping of ring A. Analogs that lack one or the other of these groups are able to form complexes with HA in which the common portion resembles that of the parent molecule.

Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) was partially purified from hog thyroid microsomes after solubilization by means of deoxycholate treatment followed by ammonium sulfate farctionation and affinity chromatography with Con A Sepharose. The absorption spectra of the preparation showed the maxima at around 410 nm for oxidized form, 422 nm for dithionite-reduced form and 422 nm for CO complex of reduced form. A quantitative and highly specific method to determine low concentrations of methionyl peptides, which do not contain tryptophan or cysteine residues, has been developed. The method is based on the stoichiometry and selectivity of N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS) towards methionine and N-acetyltryptophan.
