Cerebral autoregulation represents the physiological mechanisms that keep brain perfusion relatively constant in the face of changes in blood pressure and thus plays an essential role in normal brain function. This study assessed cerebral autoregulation in nine newborns with moderate-to-severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). These neonates received hypothermic therapy during the first 72 h of life while mean arterial pressure (MAP) and cerebral tissue oxygenation saturation (SctO2) were continuously recorded. Wavelet coherence analysis, which is a time-frequency domain approach, was use

Perinatal brain injury remains a significant cause of infant mortality and morbidity, but there is not yet an effective bedside tool that can accurately screen for brain injury, monitor injury evolution, or assess response to therapy. The energy used by neurons is derived largely from tissue oxidative metabolism, and neural hyperactivity and cell death are reflected by corresponding changes in cerebral oxygen metabolism (CMRO₂). Thus, measures of CMRO₂ are reflective of neuronal viability and provide critical diagnostic information, making CMRO₂ an ideal target for bedside measurement of brain

BACKGROUND: To reduce bubble formation and growth during hypobaric exposures, a denitrogenation or nitrogen "washout" procedure is performed. This procedure consists of prebreathing oxygen fractions as close to one as possible (oxygen prebreathe) prior to depressurization before ascending to the working altitude or low spacesuit pressures. During the NASA prebreathe reduction program (PRP), it was determined that the addition of a light arm exercise to short, individually designed, performance-based heavy exercise (dual cycle ergometry) during an abbreviated 2-h prebreathe (F1O2 - 1.0) reduced

A porous heteroatom-rich Cd(II)-polymeric framework which is generated from an ethylene glycol ether-bridging dicarboxylate ligand L, 4,4'-bipy and Cd(II) ion is reported. It contains one-dimensional tubes (9-11 Å) which are able to trap cationic lanthanide hydrates such as Eu(H(2)O)(8)(3+), Tb(H(2)O)(8)(3+), and Nd(H(2)O)(8)(3+) under ambient conditions to generate Ln(H(2)O)(8)(3+)-loaded materials. In addition, the heteroatom-rich host material can effectively protect and sensitize the encapsulated Ln(3+) emitters in their hydrate form in both air and aqueous media. Furthermore, the dual- an

High-quality water-soluble near-infrared emitting quantum dots (QDs) are synthesized using a two-step approach for the first time. The CdS shell efficiently increases the structural stability of PbS QDs during water transfer and leads to good photostability and a significantly enhanced quantum yield as high as 30% in buffer.

Near infrared (NIR) CdHgTe/CdS quantum dots (QDs) were successfully prepared by a green synthetic route. The characteristics such as morphology, size, spectra, stability and toxicity were investigated in detail. The fluorescence wavelength of CdHgTe/CdS QDs could be adjusted to the NIR range (812nm), which made the in vivo NIR imaging possible. The in vivo dynamic biodistribution of CdHgTe/CdS QDs in a mouse model was monitored by an NIR imaging system. Results indicated that CdHgTe/CdS QDs with a diameter of about 5.8nm targeted to spinal column effectively. Further imaging of the dissected s

OBJECTIVE: To explore brain activity in the frontal micturition area during natural bladder behavior.
METHODS: Five control subjects (one man and four women; mean age 61 years [38-70]) and four subjects with detrusor overactivity (all men; mean age 55 years [33-65]) were enrolled in the study. We performed real-time measurements of oxyhemoglobin concentration (oxy-Hb) changes in the frontal micturition area using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in response to quasi-natural, continuous bladder filling, and voiding in a sitting position.
RESULTS: In the control group the followin

A calix[4]arene scaffolding has been used to construct bisporphyrin ("jaws" porphyrin) hosts for supramolecular binding of fullerene guests. Fullerene affinities were optimized by varying the nature of the covalent linkage of the porphyrins to the calixarenes. Binding constants for C60 and C70 in toluene were explored as a function of substituents at the periphery of the porphyrin, and 3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl groups gave rise to the highest fullerene affinities (26,000 M(-1) for C60). The origin of this high fullerene affinity has been traced to differential solvation effects rather than to el

We evaluated the effect of coenzyme Q10 supplementation to two patients with mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) by using noninvasive tissue oximetry with near-infrared spectra of hemoglobin from the quadriceps muscle during bicycle ergometer exercise. Patients showed distinct oxygen consumption patterns reflecting the defect in oxidative phosphorylation and the impairment in oxygen utilization during exercise. Based on the oxygen consumption pattern, we considered one patient as having severe mitochondrial disorder and another patient as h

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implants (CIs) have revolutionized hearing restoration for individuals with severe or profound hearing loss. However, a substantial and unexplained variability persists in CI outcomes, even when considering subject-specific factors such as age and the duration of deafness. In a pioneering study, we use resting-state functional near-infrared spectroscopy to predict speech-understanding outcomes before and after CI implantation. Our hypothesis centers on resting-state functional connectivity (FC) reflecting brain plasticity post-hearing loss and implantation, specifically ta

The combined effects of hyperventilation and arterial desaturation on cerebral oxygenation (ScO2) were determined using near-infrared spectroscopy. Eleven competitive oarsmen were evaluated during a 6-min maximal ergometer row. The study was randomized in a double-blind fashion with an inspired O2 fraction of 0.21 or 0.30 in a crossover design. During exercise with an inspired O2 fraction of 0.21, the arterial CO2 pressure (35 +/- 1 mmHg; mean +/- SE) and O2 pressure (77 +/- 2 mmHg) as well as the hemoglobin saturation (91.9 +/- 0.7%) were reduced (P < 0.05). ScO2 was reduced from 80 +/- 2 to

OBJECTIVE: Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is one of the most common autonomic dysfunctions in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. However, many patients with OH are asymptomatic. Conversely, orthostatic dizziness (OD) is not always associated with OH. We investigated the effects of positional changes on cerebral perfusion in patients with PD and OH.
METHODS: We enrolled 42 patients, comprising 31 PD patients and 11 healthy controls. All the subjects underwent the following clinical assessments: the OH questionnaire, head-up tilt test (HUTT) with transcranial Doppler (TCD), near-infrared spectros

People with Parkinson's disease often exhibit improvements in motor tasks when exposed to external sensory cues. While the effects of different types of sensory cues on motor functions in Parkinson's disease have been widely studied, the underlying neural mechanism of these effects and the potential of sensory cues to alter the motor cortical activity patterns and functional connectivity of cortical motor areas are still unclear. This study aims to compare changes in oxygenated haemoglobin, deoxygenated haemoglobin and correlations among different cortical regions of interest during wrist move

Hyperventilation (HV) therapy uses vasoconstriction to reduce intracranial pressure (ICP) by reducing cerebral blood volume. However, as HV also lowers cerebral blood flow (CBF), it may provoke misery perfusion (MP), in which the decrease in CBF is coupled with increased oxygen extraction fraction (OEF). MP may rapidly lead to the exhaustion of brain energy metabolites, making the brain vulnerable to ischemia. MP is difficult to detect at the bedside, which is where transcranial hybrid, near-infrared spectroscopies are promising because they non-invasively measure OEF and CBF. We have tested t
