WAIS performance IQ in aphasia as a function of auditory comprehension and constructional apraxia.

This study investigated differences in nonverbal intelligence between diagnostic subgroups of aphasics using the Performance Tests of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS). Subjects were 98 right-handed hospitalized males with unilateral left-hemisphere damage who had unambiguous clinical diagnoses of Broca's, Anomic, Conduction, Mixed Non-Fluent, Wernicke's, or Global aphasia. Group differences were examined using the WAIS Performance IQ (PIQ), and subscores for spatial organization (Block Design and Object Assembly) and for verbalizability (Picture Completion and Picture Arrangement).

Application of the ICF in communication after total laryngectomy.

The World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) provides a conceptual framework for assessing and treating individuals with communication disorders. This article provides an explanation and application of the ICF to communication after total laryngectomy. To evaluate outcomes associated with total laryngectomy, common assessment tools used in speech-language pathology are described in relation to communication at the levels of Body Functions and Structures, and Activities and Participation. Assessments for Contextual Factors also are dis

Early speech and language development in children with velocardiofacial syndrome.

Speech-language impairment is one of the most common clinical features in velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS). This report describes the speech and language development of four children with VCFS studied longitudinally from 6 to 30 months of age and compares their performance with three groups of children: (1) normally developing children, (2) children with cleft lip and palate, and (3) children with isolated cleft palate. The data show that young children with VCFS show a receptive-expressive language impairment from the onset of language. Further, speech and expressive language development were

Automated Speech-Based Modeling of Item-Level Symptom Severity in Schizophrenia.

IMPORTANCE: Speech carries subtle indicators of current mental state, a phenomenon routinely used in psychiatric assessment. Despite its potential, quantitative speech analysis is not yet integrated into clinical care. OBJECTIVE: To identify which features of naturalistic speech are associated with concurrent variation in symptom severity in patients with psychotic disorders. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This longitudinal, multicenter cohort study was conducted in the Netherlands (June 7, 2017, to July 31, 2025) in adult patients (aged ≥18 years) with schizophrenia spectrum disorders w

Prenatal alcohol and cocaine exposure: influences on cognition, speech, language, and hearing.

UNLABELLED: This paper reviews research on the consequences of prenatal exposure to alcohol and cocaine on children's speech, language, hearing, and cognitive development. The review shows that cognitive impairment, learning disabilities, and behavioral disorders are the central nervous system manifestations of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), and cranio-facial abnormalities are also present. Delays in language acquisition, as well as receptive and expressive language deficits, are commonly reported. The cranio-facial abnormalities of FAS, which sometimes include cleft palate, make the child pron

Language-agnostic, Automated Assessment of Listeners' Speech Recall Using Large Language Models.

Speech-comprehension difficulties are common among older people. Standard speech tests do not fully capture such difficulties because the tests poorly resemble the context-rich, story-like nature of ongoing conversation and are typically available only in a country's dominant/official language (e.g., English), leading to inaccurate scores for native speakers of other languages. Assessments for naturalistic, story speech in multiple languages require accurate, time-efficient scoring. The current research leverages modern large language models (LLMs) in native English speakers and native speaker

Treating Speech Comprehensibility in Students With Down Syndrome.

PURPOSE: This study examined whether a particular type of therapy (Broad Target Speech Recasts, BTSR) was superior to a contrast treatment in facilitating speech comprehensibility in conversations of students with Down syndrome who began treatment with initially high verbal imitation. METHOD: We randomly assigned 51 5- to 12-year-old students to either BTSR or a contrast treatment. Therapy occurred in hour-long 1-to-1 sessions in students' schools twice per week for 6 months. RESULTS: For students who entered treatment just above the sample average in verbal-imitation skill, BTSR was superio

Two approaches to the facilitation of grammar in children with language impairment: an experimental evaluation.

Two approaches to grammar facilitation in preschool-age children with language impairment were evaluated. One approach was administered by a speech-language pathologist and the other was presented by the subjects' parents, who were trained by the speech-language pathologist. Both treatment packages ran for 4 1/2 months and made use of focused stimulation procedures and a cyclical goal-attack strategy. Subjects were 30 children between the ages of 3:8 and 5:10 (years:months) who had marked delays in grammatical development. Children who served in a delayed-treatment control group averaged no ga

Brainstem-cortical functional connectivity for speech is differentially challenged by noise and reverberation.

Everyday speech perception is challenged by external acoustic interferences that hinder verbal communication. Here, we directly compared how different levels of the auditory system (brainstem vs. cortex) code speech and how their neural representations are affected by two acoustic stressors: noise and reverberation. We recorded multichannel (64 ch) brainstem frequency-following responses (FFRs) and cortical event-related potentials (ERPs) simultaneously in normal hearing individuals to speech sounds presented in mild and moderate levels of noise and reverb. We matched signal-to-noise and direc

Childhood apraxia of speech: A survey of praxis and typical speech characteristics.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate current knowledge of the diagnosis childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) in Sweden and compare speech characteristics and symptoms to those of earlier survey findings in mainly English-speakers. METHOD: In a web-based questionnaire 178 Swedish speech-language pathologists (SLPs) anonymously answered questions about their perception of typical speech characteristics for CAS. They graded own assessment skills and estimated clinical occurrence. RESULTS: The seven top speech characteristics reported as typical for children with CAS were: inconsis

An interpretable, clinically grounded framework for digital speech biomarker development in neurodegenerative diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Communication ability-a key determinant of quality of life-is frequently affected and progressively declines in neurodegenerative diseases. Effective management of progressive communication disorders requires a personalized approach to deliver timely interventions tailored to the evolving profiles of communicative impairment, thereby supporting functional communication throughout the disease course. To this end, reliable tools capable of detecting and quantifying both disease-specific patterns of communicative impairment and within-disease phenotypic variability are urgently need

A systematic review of early speech interventions for children with cleft palate.

BACKGROUND: Children with cleft palate with or without cleft lip (CP±L) are at high risk of problems with early speech sound production, and these difficulties can persist into later childhood. Early intervention could help to reduce the number of children whose problems become persistent. However, much research in the field to date has focused on older children. There is a need to determine if providing intervention during the phase of early typical speech development leads to better outcomes. AIMS: To review the evidence for the effectiveness of interventions targeting speech, delivered in

Rapid perceptual learning of noise-vocoded speech requires attention.

Humans are able to adapt to unfamiliar forms of speech (such as accented, time-compressed, or noise-vocoded speech) quite rapidly. Can such perceptual learning occur when attention is directed away from the speech signal? Here, participants were simultaneously exposed to noise-vocoded sentences, auditory distractors, and visual distractors. One group attended to the speech, listening to each sentence and reporting what they heard. Two other groups attended to either the auditory or visual distractors, performing a target-detection task. Only the attend-speech group benefited from the exposure

Indirect facilitation of speech in a late talking child by prompted production of picture symbols or signs.

The present study investigated the effectiveness of prompted nonspoken language production using two low-tech AAC strategies (i.e., picture symbols and sign language) at indirectly facilitating speech productions in a young child with expressive language delays ("late talker"). A single subject, multiple baseline design was used. Results indicated that prompting either sign or picture-symbol production improved the child's speech output for target words without any direct prompts to speak, but that the two AAC strategies did not differ from one another in effectiveness at indirectly eliciting

Cross-sectional analysis of speech and cognitive performance in 32 patients with classic galactosemia.

BACKGROUND: Long-term outcome in classic galactosemia is disappointing with impaired IQ, reduced bone mineral density, and fertility problems. Moreover, speech impairment is common with conflicting reports regarding frequency, pattern, and relation to IQ. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate speech and cognitive performance in patients with galactosemia. METHODS: Speech performance was evaluated by means of the Hierarchische Wortlisten, a German word-repetition test for the diagnosis of apraxia of speech, using real words and pseudo-words. Cognitive performance was evaluated by use of age-appropriate Germ

Speech development in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate treated with different delays in closure of the hard palate after early velar repair: a longitudinal perspective.

We wanted to find out if different timing of delayed repair of the hard palate in a two-stage procedure had an impact on the speech of 26 patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP). The soft palate was closed at the age of 7 months and the hard palate between 38 and 89 months of age. Speech audio recordings at the age of 3 years (baseline, before any repair of the hard palate) and at the ages of 5, 7, and 10 years (the latter obtained at least one year after closure) were analysed. We used standardised speech assessments at routine follow-up and assessment by one external listener. T

Cleft lip and palate patients prior to delayed closure of the hard palate: evaluation of maxillary morphology and the effect of early stimulation on pre-school speech.

Speech and maxillary development were analysed in two groups of patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate; both groups had early jaw orthopaedic treatment and a surgical regimen that included two-stage lip surgery (mean ages of 2 and 19 months) and soft palate repair (8 months). Closure of the hard palate was postponed until the children were 8 to 10 years of age. The first group comprised 10 consecutive patients who were analysed at 5 and 7 years of age, and the second group seven patients who were studied at the age of 5. Both groups were thus investigated before the repair of the cleft
