Allocentric coding in ventral and dorsal routes during real-time reaching: Evidence from imaging-guided multi-site brain stimulation.

Recent evidence has revealed an advantage for movements to last target positions in a structured visual display, suggesting a mediating role of allocentric, in addition to egocentric, information in goal-directed reaching. This notion is accommodated by the recently updated perception-action model (Milner and Goodale, 2008), which postulates functional roles of ventral and dorsal neural areas in allocentric coding. In the present study, we used imaging-guided multi-site continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) over regions of the ventral and dorsal processing streams to unravel their function

Joint trajectories of physical activity, health, and income before and after statutory retirement: A 22-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Health behaviors, health, and income change during aging. However, no previous studies have examined, how they develop together over the transition to statutory retirement. We aimed to examine their joint development and to identify the determinants of any distinct trajectories. METHODS: We studied former employees of the City of Helsinki, Finland, who transitioned to full statutory retirement between 2000 and 2022 (n = 5209, 80% women). We examined five repeated questionnaire surveys to identify any joint developmental patterns in the key indicators of healthy aging and well-bein

Risky behavior and risk in adolescents with IDDM.

PURPOSE: To determine: (1) the frequency of risky behaviors (alcohol and other drug use, smoking cigarettes, smokeless tobacco use, and unprotected intercourse); (2) the perception of general risks and diabetes-related risks from risky behaviors; (3) if perception of risk is related to engaging in risky behaviors; and (4) if perception of general risks and diabetes-related risks are influenced by age, gender, or race in adolescents with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Decreasing risky behaviors in youth with IDDM is important because of their increased vulnerability to specific dis

Burn-out and relationship with the learning environment among psychiatry residents: a longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVES: Recent research suggests that burn-out is high and appears to be rooted in system-level factors including the local learning environment (LE). While most studies on this topic have been cross-sectional, our aim was to explore the relationship between burn-out and the LE over time within psychiatry residents. We hypothesised that burn-out is a significant predictor of learner perception of overall and all subdomains of LE within residents. DESIGN: This was a repeated measures questionnaire study. SETTING: We surveyed psychiatry residents in Singapore between January 2016 and Decem

A Context-Aware Adaptive Reasoning Framework for Dynamic Industrial Embodied Intelligence Systems.

In modern industrial settings, flexible production pipelines are increasingly essential to accommodate customized products and small-batch orders under dynamic operational conditions. Traditional execution and reasoning pipelines deployed at edge nodes typically rely on fixed topologies, where computation, memory access, and control flows are statically predefined. These rigid designs are ill-equipped to handle process variations or dynamic task scheduling, leading to execution discontinuities, state inconsistencies, and suboptimal runtime responsiveness in embodied systems. This paper propose

Exploring College Students' AI Dependence in Human-AI Collaborative Creation: Development and Validation of the CC-PACE Model.

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) poses significant challenges to creativity research and practice. Managing the degree of AI dependence during the creative process is therefore critical to fostering the healthy development of human creativity. To address this concern, this study proposes the CC-PACE model by integrating the 5A's framework with the I-PACE model, and examines factors associated with AI dependence during the creative process. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 813 college students in China, and the data were analyzed using partial least squares structural

GEM-YOLO: A Lightweight and Real-Time RGBT Object Detector with Gated Multimodal Fusion.

Red-Green-Blue-Thermal (RGBT) object detection is critical for robust all-weather perception. However, deploying dual-stream networks on resource-constrained edge devices is severely hindered by insufficiently adaptive multimodal fusion, the loss of small-object features during downsampling, and substantial computational overhead. To address these challenges, we propose GEM-YOLO, a real-time and lightweight RGBT detector. Specifically, an Adaptive Multimodal Gated Fusion Mechanism (GFM) is designed to dynamically calibrate modality weights and suppress noise. Furthermore, Space-to-Depth (SPD)

The neural processes of illusory occlusion in object recognition.

Fast and accurate object recognition is crucial for effective behavior in dynamic visual environments. In some cases, the visual system must overcome ambiguity in visual input during object recognition, such as when an object is partially hidden behind another. Recurrent processing between higher- and lower-order areas is thought to play a role in resolving such ambiguity, enabling the filling in of missing visual information. Here we examined this claim using a novel paradigm in which partial object images appear "occluded" by an illusory Kanizsa figure, perception of which also depends on re

Collision avoidance behaviors of recently concussed female rugby players with an approaching person.

BACKGROUND: Successful collision avoidance requires individuals to use readily available perceptual information to make decisions and act within their action capabilities. Female varsity rugby players use time-to-collision information to get closer to an obstacle before deviating; however, following a sport-related concussion (SRC), individuals may not be able to use the same strategies due to poorer action boundary perception. The current study examined the effects of a SRC on collision avoidance with an approaching person. METHODS: Non-concussed female varsity rugby athletes (ATH, n = 10) a

Knowledge corruption for visual perception in individuals high on paranoia.

Studies revealed that patients with paranoid schizophrenia display overconfidence in errors for memory and social cognition tasks. The present investigation examined whether this pattern holds true for visual perception tasks. Nonclinical participants were recruited via an online panel. Individuals were asked to complete a questionnaire that included the Paranoia Checklist and were then presented with 24 blurry pictures; half contained a hidden object while the other half showed snowy (visual) noise. Participants were asked to state whether the visual items contained an object and how confiden

Sensory training for patients with focal hand dystonia.

Some patients with focal hand dystonia have impaired sensory perception. Abnormal sensory processing may lead to problems with fine motor control. For patients with focal hand dystonia who demonstrate sensory dysfunction, sensory training may reverse sensory impairment and dystonic symptoms. We studied the efficacy of learning to read braille as a method of sensory training for patients with focal hand dystonia. Sensory spatial discrimination was evaluated in 10 patients who had focal hand dystonia and 10 age- and gender-matched controls with a spatial acuity test (JVP domes were used in this

Decoding of frequency-modulated sweeps by core and belt neurons in the alert macaque auditory cortex.

Acoustic stimuli where the spectrum is time-varying are ubiquitous in natural sounds, including animal vocalizations, human speech, and music. Early studies of such stimuli involving frequency-modulated sweeps reveal that neurons in the primary auditory cortex of a variety of mammals show differences in firing rates depending on either the direction of the sweep and/or the sweep velocity. Psychophysical studies have also shown that the perception of such time-varying stimulus parameters is quite acute, underscoring the importance of such signals in normal acoustic perception. The responses of

Face pareidolia is enhanced by 40 Hz transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) of the face perception network.

Pareidolia refers to the perception of ambiguous sensory patterns as carrying a specific meaning. In its most common form, pareidolia involves human-like facial features, where random objects or patterns are illusionary recognized as faces. The current study investigated the neurophysiological correlates of face pareidolia via transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). tACS was delivered at gamma (40 Hz) frequency over critical nodes of the "face perception" network (i.e., right lateral occipito-temporal and left prefrontal cortex) of 75 healthy participants while completing four fac
