The rehabilitation of patients with acquired defects of the maxilla is a challenge in terms of reestablishing oronasal separation. In most patients these goals are met by means of prosthetic rehabilitation with an obturator prosthesis. If the remaining dentition does not offer sufficient retention and support, the placement of zygoma implants can enhance the stability of the prosthesis. Due to the anatomic intricacies of the zygomatic bone and the implant length, computer-supported navigated implant placement can be advantageous. In the following clinical report, a diabetic patient with a stat

After tooth extraction, the alveolar ridge will commonly decrease in volume and change morphologically. These changes are usually clinically significant and can make placement of a conventional bridge or an implant-supported crown difficult. If bone resorption is significant enough, then placement of an implant may become extremely challenging. Postextraction maintenance of the alveolar ridge minimizes residual ridge resorption and, thus, allows placement of an implant that satisfies esthetic and functional criteria. Recent advances in bone grafting materials and techniques allow the dentist t

A survey which included a series of demographic questions, a brief clinical history, and pictures of eight radiographs was mailed to 2000 general dentists and 1000 pediatric dentists. Usable responses were received from 1369 (45%) dentists--765 (38%) general dentists, and 604 (60%) pediatric dentists. The dentists were asked to select the optimal treatment for a specified tooth in each radiograph. The results of this survey indicate that there were differences in the treatment recommendations of general and pediatric dentists. Whether or not pulp therapy was recommended, general dentists frequ

To investigate the permeability of the dental enamel of erupted and unerupted human pre-molars and its variation with depth, we determined the resistivity of successive 100-micron-thick layers. The electrical resistance of halved tooth crowns at zero Hertz, which according to Scholberg et al. (1982, 1984) is inversely related to the permeability, was measured before and after removal of successive enamel layers from the outer surface toward the dentino-enamel junction (D.E.J.). The resistivity of the successive enamel layers increased from the D.E.J. toward the outer surface in approximately t…

Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) of permanent teeth occur frequently in children and young adults. Crown fractures and luxations are the most commonly occurring of all dental injuries. Proper diagnosis, treatment planning and followup are important for improving a favorable outcome. Guidelines should assist dentists and patients in decision making and for providing the best care effectively and efficiently. The International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) has developed a consensus statement after a review of the dental literature and group discussions. Experienced researchers and cl

Traditional tooth-supported and implant-supported fixed/removable restorations are currently used to replace teeth lost due to periodontal disease. This article reviews the existing literature for oral rehabilitation of partially edentulous periodontal patients with various designs of removable dental prosthesis (RDP), fixed dental prosthesis (FDP) and implant-supported single crown (SC), by addressing their (a) general features, (b) survival and complication rates, along with considerations for treatment planning in periodontal patients, and (c) preference by patients. To answer these issues,

PURPOSE: Cone-beam computed technology (CBCT) is a relatively new medium for maxillofacial conditions. Developed in 1998, commercial cone beam technology has been commonly used since 2000. CBCT offers less radiation than computed tomography (CT) in 3D image construction. With the meteoric rise in the number of dental implant surgeries, CBCT could become a common machine in dental offices. The objective of this study is to validate the accuracy of CBCT tooth measurements.
MATERIALS: Twelve embalmed cadavers had a complete CBCT of the head and neck region. Ninety-six teeth (8 per cadaver) were

BACKGROUND: Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) comprises a group of inherited conditions affecting enamel formation and mineralization, with significant esthetic, functional, and psychosocial consequences. Management of adolescents with hypocalcified AI remains challenging because of the compromised enamel structure, ongoing craniofacial growth, and need to preserve future restorative options. This report describes a staged direct and indirect composite approach in an adolescent with hypocalcified AI and concomitant Bartter syndrome, including its short-term clinical performance and limitations.

AIM: The aim of this case series study is to classify deviations in mandibular and maxillary premolar eruption according to aetiology, with a focus on the resorption pattern in the preceding primary molars. The purpose is also to give treatment guidance based on aetiology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Radiographic material from 64 cases with abnormal premolar eruptions were grouped into three eruptions phases: Phase 1, from tooth bud to early root formation, sub-grouped according to "ankylosis" or "not ankylosis" of the primary molars; Phase 2, from start of eruption to the penetration of gingiva,

Patient expectations from implant treatment have changed over the years and esthetics plays an important role in defining what is now called success of rehabilitation. Of the many factors that influence the outcome of the rehabilitation, the two main ones are the bone and soft-tissue deficiencies at the intended implant site. Many surgical approaches are described in terms of timing of implant placement and management of regenerative procedures. The aim of this article is to discuss the different implant placement alternatives in the esthetic area, in particular: (i) the timing of implant plac

BACKGROUND: This study aims to quantify the space required to level the mandibular curve of Spee (COS) using three-dimensional (3D) digitizing techniques and to develop a corresponding mathematical model.
METHODS: Dental models exhibiting various depths of COS were digitally scanned, segmented, and aligned. Crown-root-inclusive digital models replaced the initial scans to calculate the space needed for COS leveling. Coordinates of the contact points (CPs) were measured, and the relationships among CP depth, required space, and the two-dimensional (2D) arch circumference were analyzed. Several

Comparing modern humans and Neanderthals, we have previously shown that recent modern humans (RMH) and Neanderthals differ in anterior root lengths, and that this difference cannot be explained by group differences in overall mandibular size. Here, we first document the evolutionary changes of root size and shape of the anterior upper and lower dentition in a broad chronological and geographical framework. We then use the size and shape differences between RMH and Neanderthals to classify several isolated teeth from Kebara cave and Steinheim, and to interpret the anterior tooth roots of the Ta

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether embrasure morphology can affect the association between bone crest-contact point distance and central papilla height in esthetic dentistry.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: The central papilla was visually assessed in 310 adults using standardized periapical radiographs of the maxillary central incisors. The following vertical distances were measured: bone crest to contact point, proximal cementoenamel junction to contact point, and papilla height. The horizontal distance measured was the interdental width. Subjects were divided into 4 groups according to interdental widt

The fracture of anterior teeth in children creates psychological impact on both the parents and the child especially if the injury affects the permanent dentition and involves the loss of extensive tooth structure. Besides the pain and discomfort from the injury, the child's changed appearance may make him the target for teasing and even ridicule by other children. Traumatic teeth can be treated in different ways, in the WHO system, eight groups were classified according to the anatomical structure involved, and treatment planning depends on the type of the injuries to the teeth and their supp

Dens evaginatus (DE) is an uncommon dental anomaly, having been well documented since 1925. It occurs primarily in people of Asian descent and is exhibited by protrusion of a tubercle from occlusal surfaces of posterior teeth, and lingual surfaces of anterior teeth. Tubercles have an enamel layer covering a dentin core containing a thin extension of pulp. These cusp-like protrusions are susceptible to pulp exposure from wear or fracture because of malocclusion, leading to pulpal complications soon after eruption. Endodontic intervention of permanent teeth with immature roots is unpredic for in

Talon cusp is a developmental dental anomaly, normally located on the palatal surface of the anterior teeth, that can occur in both primary and permanent dentition. The aim of this article is to relate a clinical case of talon cusp that interfered with both the occlusion and appearance of the patient. During anamnesis, the patient told of difficulty masticating. Clinical examination revealed labial inclination of the maxillary central incisors, featuring an overjet of about 5 mm, with interposition of the lower lip and an Angle Class I occlusal relationship. A treatment plan was devised in whi
