Relative memory deficits in recurrent versus first-episode major depression on a word-list learning task.

Although memory deficits are associated with major depressive disorder, few studies have identified which patient characteristics predict impairment. Because recurrent depression appears related to more severe cerebral dysfunction, the present study tested whether recurrent depressed individuals have worse memory function than first-episode depressed individuals. Two groups of young-adult, nonpsychotic, depressed inpatients (20 single episode [SE] and 46 recurrent episode [RE]) were administered the California Verbal Learning Test within a broader battery of neuropsychological tests. The group…

Serial recall of poor readers in two presentation modalities: combined effects of phonological similarity and word length.

Immediate ordered memory for words in poor readers was compared with that of two control groups of normal readers, matched on chronological age and reading age, respectively. The groups were equated for basal memory capacity. Phonological similarity and word length were simultaneously manipulated. Items were presented either auditorily (spoken words) or visually (their corresponding drawings). The results suggest that when having to recall a restricted set of items and when verbal output is eliminated, phonological coding and rehearsal occur to the same extent in poor and normal readers, with

Objects and properties: a study of the breakdown of semantic memory.

This paper reports a study of the breakdown of semantic memory in the case of a subject with semantic dementia. The first experiment shows that the subject failed to comprehend words of low familiarity and word frequency, even though the spoken word forms were recognised as familiar. Experiments 2 and 3 showed (a) that the recall of word meanings in definition tasks did not vary with the generality of the word meaning (e.g. category, basic level, or subordinate property) but varied instead with the concept familiarity and frequency of the name; (b) that the ability to verify properties of basi

Effects of active student response during error correction on the acquisition, maintenance, and generalization of sight words by students with developmental disabilities.

We used an alternating treatments design to compare the effects of active student response error correction and no-response error correction during sight word instruction. Six students with developmental disabilities were provided one-to-one daily sight word instruction on eight sets of 20 unknown words. Each set of 20 words was divided randomly into two equal groups. Student errors during instruction on one group of words were immediately followed by the teacher modeling the word and the student repeating it (active student response instruction). Errors on the other group of words were immedi

Semantic paralexias facilitated by tachistoscopic reading in a patient with impairment of phonological recoding.

This study of a dyslexic patient supports the view that the level of impairment of the phonological route plays a role in the production of semantic paralexias. The patient's reading was based on a defective phoneme-to-grapheme transcoding, in spite of evidence that semantic information was available through non phonological routes. The hypothesis that the residual ability to carry out phonological recoding could block the production of semantic paralexias was confirmed by tachistoscopic reading, assumed to interfere with phonological recoding in this patient, that provoked a definite rise of

Assessing the acquisition of incidental information by secondary-age students with mental retardation: comparison of response prompting strategies.

The effectiveness and efficiency of four response prompting conditions (progressive time delay, progressive time delay with a descriptive consequent event, system of least prompts, and system of least prompts with a descriptive consequent event) were compared. Students with moderate to severe mental retardation were taught to read functional recipe words. Maintenance and students' acquisition of incidental information were assessed when it was (a) embedded in the prompts of the system of least prompts procedure, (b) included in the descriptive praise statements following correct performance wi

Generalization of object naming after training with picture cards and with objects.

Generalization of four retarded children's object naming responses to stimuli in the natural environment was assessed after training with either objects or pictures of the objects. Generalization was typically greater after training with objects. In a second experiment, half of the stimuli that showed little generalization were retrained by alternating the original training object with an object that belonged to the same stimulus class as the training stimulus. The other half were simply retrained using the object. The alternating procedure resulted in substantial increases in generalization t

Preschool morphological awareness contributes to word reading at the very earliest stages of learning to read in a transparent orthography.

The purpose of the current study was to examine whether morphological awareness measured before children are taught to read (Kindergarten in Israel) predicts reading accuracy and fluency in the middle of first grade, at the very beginning of the process of learning to read pointed Hebrew - a highly transparent orthography, and whether this contribution remains after controlling for phonemic awareness. In a longitudinal design, 680 Hebrew-speaking children were administered morphological and phonemic awareness measures at the end of the preschool year (before they were taught to read) then foll

The description-experience gap in risky choice in nonhuman primates.

Risk attitudes in humans depend on the format used to present the gamble: we are more risk-averse for common gambles in the gains domain whose properties are described to us verbally than for those whose properties we learned about solely through experience. This difference, which constitutes part of the description-experience gap, is important, because it highlights the role of knowledge acquisition in decision-making. The reasons for the gap remain obscure, but could depend upon uniquely human cognitive abilities, such as those associated with language. Thus, the gap may or may not extend to

Impact of vertigo and spatial disorientation on concurrent cognitive tasks.

Disorientation may draw attention from other activities and its impact on cognition may cause pilot error and problems of concentration in dizzy patients. Tasks used to study the impact of disorientation include number processing, intelligence scales and Brookes matrices (reproduction of 2xD patterns of numbers vs. nonsensical sentences), and Stroop tasks to probe selective effects on spatial versus verbally-loaded tasks. This variety of tasks has been used to evaluate cognitive performance in numerous scenarios, including visual-vestibular mismatch, vection, spinning, coriolis, balancing, and

Current patterns and future possibilities in the care of acute ischemic stroke.

Zack Hall, Director of the NINDS, succinctly described the present situation: "This is the golden age of neuroscience research" (verbal presentation at the annual meeting of the American Neurological Association, 1997). Recent trials in clinical research have demonstrated the power of thrombolytic therapy in acute ischemic stroke, and investigators across the country are now refining that therapy. The advantages of thrombolytic intervention can be provided to a much larger proportion of the population as we defined techniques to slow the rate of neuronal cell death after ischemia. However, the

Background noise levels and reverberation times in unoccupied classrooms: predictions and measurements.

Classrooms are often filled with deterrents that hamper a child's ability to listen and learn. It is evident that the acoustical environment in classrooms can be one such deterrent. Excessive background noise and reverberation can affect the achievement and educational performance of children with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and children with normal hearing sensitivity who have other auditory learning difficulties, as well as elementary school children with no verbal or hearing disabilities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the extent of the problem of noise and reverberation in

Early grammar-building in French-speaking deaf children with cochlear implants: A follow-up corpus study.

BACKGROUND: One of the most consistent findings reported in the paediatric cochlear implant (CI) literature is the heterogeneity of language performance observed more in grammatical morphology than in lexicon or pragmatics. As most of the corpus studies addressing these issues have been conducted in English, it is unclear whether their results can be generalized to other languages. In particular, little is known about languages known for their grammatical complexity, such as French. AIMS: The aim of this corpus study was to compare the productive use of function words (FWs) and some agreement

Effects of Verbal Cueing on Respiratory-Swallow Patterning, Lung Volume Initiation, and Swallow Apnea Duration in Parkinson's Disease.

Respiratory-swallow coordination (RSC) is important for swallowing safety. Atypical RSC is common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and is associated with the presence of dysphagia and aspiration. Verbal cueing is known to affect RSC in healthy adults, yet an understanding of its effect on RSC in PD is unknown. Therefore, the aims of this study were to: (1) assess the effects of verbal cueing on respiratory-swallow patterning, lung volume initiation, and swallow apnea duration in PD; and (2) determine when during tidal breathing verbal cues should be given in order to increase the likelihood of elic

Retrieval-Based Word Learning in Young Typically Developing Children and Children With Development Language Disorder II: A Comparison of Retrieval Schedules.

Purpose Retrieval practice has been found to be a powerful strategy to enhance long-term retention of new information; however, the utility of retrieval practice when teaching young children new words is largely unknown, and even less is known for young children with language impairments. The current study examined the effect of 2 different retrieval schedules on word learning at both the behavioral and neural levels. Method Participants included 16 typically developing children ( M TD = 61.58 months) and 16 children with developmental language disorder ( M DLD = 59.60 months). Children partic

Teaching multiply controlled intraverbals to children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders.

Reciprocal conversations, instructional activities, and other social interactions are replete with multiply controlled intraverbals, examples of which have been conceptualized in terms of conditional discriminations. Although the acquisition of conditional discriminations has been examined extensively in the behavior-analytic literature, little research has evaluated procedures to establish multiply controlled intraverbals. Thus, the purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of procedures based on conditional discrimination training on the acquisition of multiply controlled int
