Laryngeal synkinesis following reinnervation in the rat. Neuroanatomic and physiologic study using retrograde fluorescent tracers and electromyography.

The functional organization of laryngeal motoneurons in the nucleus ambiguous (NA) was evaluated in adult male rats before and after recurrent laryngeal nerve section and reinnervation. Using retrograde double labeling techniques with fluorescent probes, we obtained the number and position of labeled neurons by using the Bioquant 3-D imaging system. Reinnervation was documented by electromyography. In nine control animals vector analysis revealed significant (p less than .05) separation of the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle motoneurons and the thyroarytenoid and lateral cricoarytenoid (

Electrophysiologic pacing of vocal cord abductors in bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis.

We have reconfirmed our previous findings that controlled, reproducible, sustained, discrete vocal cord abduction can be achieved synchronously with respiration by electrophysiologic stimulation of the paralyzed posterior cricoarytenoid muscles. Moreover, we have demonstrated that this can be triggered synchronously by employing the normal physiologic chest wall movements that occur on respiration. To our knowledge, this represents the first report of functionally paced vocal fold abduction with respiration employing physiologic chest wall motions using an implantable device, and may represent

Altered folate metabolism disrupts auditory function from neonatal vocalizations to adult perceptual precision.

Methylenetetrahydrofolate‐reductase (MTHFR) is a critical enzyme in folate-dependent one-carbon metabolism. While MTHFR polymorphisms have been linked to sensorineural hearing loss and neurodevelopmental disorders in humans, the translation of early-life metabolic stress into long-term sensory processing and perceptual consequences has remained unclear. Here, we combined neonatal ultrasonic vocalization analysis, adult auditory-brainstem recordings, two-photon calcium imaging of the auditory cortex, and high-resolution psychophysics to map the effects of partial Mthfr deficiency across differe

Prenatal Valproate Exposure Affects Cortical Neurite Branching, GABAergic Markers, Motor Reflexes and Ultrasonic Vocalizations in the Male Rat Pups.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition, characterized by early-onset deficits in social interactions, communication, and repetitive behaviors. Dysfunction of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurotransmission during neural development has been implicated as a potential mechanism, particularly within the frontal cortex. This study aimed to investigate the effects of prenatal valproate (VPA) exposure on the sensorimotor reflexes, ultrasonic vocalization (USV), and GABAergic markers in the frontal cortex of male offspring. The morphology of primary cortical neurons

Sex-dependent role of vesicular glutamate transporter 3 in stress-regulation and related anxiety phenotype during the early postnatal period.

Stress and related disorders are in the focus of interest and glutamate is one of the most important neurotransmitters that can affect these processes. Glutamatergic neurons are characterized by vesicular glutamate transporters (VGluT1-3) among which vGluT3 is unique contributing to the non-canonical, neuromodulatory effect of glutamate. We aimed to study the role of vGluT3 in stress axis regulation and related anxiety during the early postnatal period using knockout (KO) mice with special focus on sex differences. Anxiety was explored on postnatal day (PND) 7-8 by maternal separation-induced

Opioid modulation of song in male zebra finches (Taenopygia guttata).

Endogenous opioids are known to modulate motivated behaviors. Male zebra finches produce a highly motivated behavior (directed song) to court females and also sing in isolation (undirected song). We found that adult male zebra finches sang significantly fewer directed and undirected songs after administration of low doses (2.5 mg/kg body weight) of the general opioid antagonist naloxone, even though the order of syllables in songs was not altered. Surprisingly, high doses of naloxone (10 mg/kg body weight) dramatically decreased the production of undirected songs but had no significant effects

Intravenous morphine does not modify dorsal horn touch-evoked allodynia in the mononeuropathic rat: a Fos study.

In a model of mononeuropathic pain (chronic constriction injury of the sciatic nerve, CCI), we have demonstrated that light touch stimuli (stroking) to the paw induced Fos-like immunoreactivity (Fos-LI) in the superficial and deep dorsal horn of the rat spinal cord (Catheline et al., Pain 80 (1999a) 347). The efficacy of opioids in neuropathic pain being controversial, we have tested the effects of morphine (0.3, 1 and 3 mg/kg intravenous, i.v.) on this spinal Fos-LI evoked by light tactile stimuli, which could be related to mechanical allodynia. Morphine did not change the level of spinal Fos

Communal nesting exerts epigenetic influences on affective and social behaviors in rats selectively bred for an infantile trait.

Communal nesting (CN) is a mouse model of early social enrichment during pregnancy and lactation. In this study, a rat model of CN was developed to determine if CN exerts an epigenetic effect in rats selectively bred for an infantile affective trait (high and low rates of ultrasonic distress calls). High and Low offspring from CN groups were compared to standard reared (SN) offspring on five measures of social and affective behavior at three critical ages. A differential effect of the CN paradigm on High and Low lines was seen in measures of anxiety and arousal, but not in measures of depressi

Behavioral sensitization following exposure to low doses of trimethylolpropane phosphate.

Behavioral sensitization is commonly studied within the context of drugs known to directly increase activity in the brain's dopamine system, particularly drugs of abuse. However, the present research suggests such behavioral changes can also be observed following exposure to other compounds that indirectly affect the dopamine system. One such compound is trimethylolpropane phosphate (TMPP), a bridged organophosphate that can be produced by the partial pyrolysis of certain synthetic lubricants used on military ships and aircraft. Although TMPP is a potent convulsant, it has been demonstrated th

Selective phonotaxis to advertisement calls in the grey treefrog Hyla versicolor: behavioral experiments and neurophysiological correlates.

1. The significance of particular acoustic properties of advertisement calls for selective phonotaxis by the gray treefrog, Hyla versicolor (= HV), was studied behaviorally and neurophysiologically. Most stimuli were played back at 85 dB SPL, a level typically measured at 1-2 m from a calling male. 2. Females preferred stimuli with conspecific pulse shapes at 20 degrees and 24 degrees C, but not at 16 degrees C. Tests with normal and time-reversed pulses indicated the preferences were not influenced by the minor differences in the long-term spectra of pulses of different shape. 3. Pulse shape

Hear them roar: A comparison of black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) and human (Homo sapiens) perception of arousal in vocalizations across all classes of terrestrial vertebrates.

Recently, evidence for acoustic universals in vocal communication was found by demonstrating that humans can identify levels of arousal in vocalizations produced by species across three biological classes (Filippi et al., 2017). Here, we extend this work by testing whether two vocal learning species, humans and chickadees, can discriminate vocalizations of high and low arousal using operant discrimination go/no-go tasks. Stimuli included vocalizations from nine species: giant panda, American alligator, common raven, hourglass treefrog, African elephant, Barbary macaque, domestic pig, black-cap

Mapping trait-like socio-affective phenotypes in rats through 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations.

RATIONALE: Fifty-kilohertz ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) in rats are believed to express inter-individual differences in trait-like positive affective phenotypes. Emission of 50-kHz USV can be induced by amphetamine (AMPH) to model mania-like positive affect, raising the possibility that predispositions for high 50-kHz USV production confer susceptibility to mania-like states. Such 50-kHz USV presumably express the sender's motivation for social contact and elicit social approach behavior in receivers. OBJECTIVES: We recently showed that AMPH-induced 50-kHz USV are paralleled by mania-like p

Reversing Age Related Changes of the Laryngeal Muscles by Chronic Electrostimulation of the Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve.

Age related atrophy of the laryngeal muscles -mainly the thyroarytenoid muscle (TAM)- leads to a glottal gap and consequently to a hoarse and dysphonic voice that significantly affects quality of life. The aim of our study was to reverse this atrophy by inducing muscular hypertrophy by unilateral functional electrical stimulation (FES) of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) in a large animal model using aged sheep (n = 5). Suitable stimulation parameters were determined by fatiguing experiments of the thyroarytenoid muscle in an acute trial. For the chronic trial an electrode was placed around

Effect of age and testosterone on autumnal neurogenesis in male European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris).

The male European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) is an open-ended learner that increases its repertoire throughout life. In parallel, the volume of high vocal center (HVC) is larger in older birds than in yearlings. We labeled with the thymidine analog 5'-bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) the cells that are generated during the fall in the brain of adult males that were 2 or more years old and in yearling males that were treated with exogenous testosterone (T) or kept intact before BrdU administration. In all subjects, the singing rate was recorded and BrdU-labeled cells were quantified in HVC, in prolife

Outcome of 45 dogs with laryngeal paralysis treated by unilateral arytenoid lateralization or bilateral ventriculocordectomy.

The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess risk factors and complications affecting postoperative outcome of dogs with laryngeal paralysis treated by either unilateral arytenoid lateralization (UAL) or bilateral ventriculocordectomy (VCC). Medical records of all dogs having either UAL or VCC between 2000 and 2011 were analyzed. Twenty-five dogs had VCC and 20 dogs had UAL. The overall postoperative complications rates for VCC and UAL were similar (52% and 60%, respectively; P = .0887). Dogs that had UAL were more likely to have acute postoperative respiratory distress and aspiration
