A schistosomiasis prevalence and intensity survey was carried out among school children in selected residential suburbs of Harare. Urine and stool specimens were collected for determination of schistosomiasis infection from 2,552 children aged between five and 15 years. A total of 351 (13.7 pc) school children were found to be infected with Schistosoma haematobium while 172 (6.7 pc) pupils were found to be positive for S. mansoni. BACKGROUND: HIV-infected infants in sub-Saharan Africa have rapid disease progression. We hypothesized that co-infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV) or Epstein Barr virus (EBV) increases mortality in HIV-infected infants.
METHODS: 257 antiretroviral therapy-naïve HIV-infected Zimbabwean infants were tested for CMV and EBV at 6 weeks of age by real-time PCR; if positive, birth samples were retrieved where available to distinguish congenital and postnatal infection. The role of hostile sexism in accounting for rape proclivity among men was investigated using a sample of Zimbabwean students. Participants were presented with either an acquaintance rape or a stranger rape scenario and asked to respond to five questions about the scenario designed to assess rape proclivity. Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-E and HLA-G molecules act as powerful modulators of the innate immune response. The present study shows that the HLA-E(G) genetic variant (the HLA-E*0103 allele) alone is significantly (P = .001) associated with a 4.0-fold decreased risk of human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) infection in Zimbabwean women. The influence of A. suum infection on the haematology, liver-related serum enzymes, blood urea and live weight gain in Mukota and Large White (LW) weaner pigs was compared. OBJECTIVES: To compare the rate of self reported sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among HIV infected men with men who remained HIV negative during follow up of a Harare male factory cohort.
METHODS: Male factory workers were offered enrolment and behavioural data were collected at entry then every 6 months, along with HIV testing. Self report of STDs was used to calculate incidence per 100 person years. Cox proportional hazards models examined independent risk factors for STDs, with hazard ratios (HRs).

Twenty-seven patients with malaria were treated at Groote Schuur Hospital between 1976 and 1980. Only 2 patients had taken adequate prophylactic agents. Although the incidence of complications was high, no deaths occurred. It is anticipated that the number of cases of malaria seen in Cape Town will increase and a high index of suspicion about malaria among clinicians is urged.
