Obese adolescents with polycystic ovarian syndrome have elevated cardiovascular disease risk markers.

Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) have evidence of subclinical cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, insulin resistance, an important factor in the development of CVD in adults, is common in adolescents with PCOS, yet data in adolescents are limited. Therefore, we sought to measure insulin resistance and CVD markers in obese youth with and without PCOS. Thirty-six PCOS and 17 non-PCOS adolescent girls who were obese, sedentary, and non-hypertensive were recruited from clinics located within the Children's Hospital Colorado. Following 3 days of controlled diet and restricted exerci

Cortical neuroinflammation contributes to long-term cognitive dysfunctions following adolescent delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol treatment in female rats.

Over 180 million people consume cannabis globally. Cannabis use peaks during adolescence with a trend for continued consumption by adults. Notably, several studies have shown that long-term and heavy cannabis use during adolescence can impair brain maturation and predispose to neurodevelopmental disorders, although the neurobiological mechanisms underlying this association remain largely unknown. In this study, we evaluated whether, in female rats, chronic administration of increasing doses of the psychotropic plant-derived cannabis constituent, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), during adole

Effects of age at first substance use and psychiatric comorbidity on the development of substance use disorders.

In this paper, we examine the effects of age at first substance use, and history of psychiatric disorders, on the development of substance use disorder (SUD) by age 16. We use a prospective, longitudinal design to disaggregate the effects of age at first use and time since first use on the development of adolescent SUD. Second, we test the hypothesis that adolescent SUD is an unlikely progression from early substance use unless children also show other early conduct problems. A population sample of 1,420 children from the Great Smoky Mountains Study (GSMS) was assessed annually between ages 9

Chronic Social Defeat During Adolescence Induces Short- and Long-Term Behavioral and Neuroendocrine Effects in Male Swiss-Webster Mice.

Chronic stress exposure during adolescence is a significant risk factor for the development of depression. Chronic social defeat (CSD) in rodents is an animal model of depression with excellent ethological, predictive, discriminative, and face validity. Because the CSD model has not been thoroughly examined as a model of stress-induced depression within the adolescence stage, the present study analyzed the short- and long-term behavioral and neuroendocrine effects of CSD during early adolescence. Therefore, adolescent male Swiss-Webster (SW) mice were exposed to the CSD model from postnatal da

Adolescents and sexually transmitted diseases.

Pediatricians with busy practices have limited time to spend with each patient. But because much of adolescent morbidity and mortality is related to behavioral issues, time and energy are crucial to providing effective counseling and care to adolescents. Many barriers to provision of services to adolescents exist, including time, space, décor, office hours, office fees, and support personnel. Despite these barriers to care of adolescents and, in particular, sexually active adolescents, the need for pediatricians to provide these services is clear. Services include anticipatory guidance and cou

Prenatal Opioid Exposure Impairs Endocannabinoid and Glutamate Transmission in the Dorsal Striatum.

The opioid crisis has contributed to a growing population of children exposed to opioids during fetal development; however, many of the long-term effects of opioid exposure on development are unknown. We previously demonstrated that opioids have deleterious effects on endocannabinoid plasticity at glutamate synapses in the dorsal striatum of adolescent rodents, but it is unclear whether prenatal opioid exposure produces similar neuroadaptations. Using a mouse model of prenatal methadone exposure (PME), we performed proteomics, phosphoproteomics, and patch-clamp electrophysiology in the dorsola

Magnetic resonance imaging in paediatric psychoneuroendocrinology: a new frontier for understanding the impact of hormones on emotion and cognition.

Mounting magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) research is characterising the neurobiological trajectories of healthy human brain development. In parallel, studies increasingly acknowledge the relevance of perturbations of these trajectories for adolescent and adult psychopathology. Although an influence of steroid hormones on mood and anxiety disorders has been demonstrated in adults, very little is known about how steroid hormones alter human brain development and contribute to adolescent psychopathology. This review focuses on recent evidence obtained from structural and functional MRI in childr

Early interceptive treatment of asymmetry.

Severe asymmetry in pre-adolescent children usually arises either from congenital anomalies, such as unilateral condylar hypoplasia, or as a result of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, condylar hyperplasia or early fracture of the mandible. Early surgical and orthodontic interceptive treatment of the asymmetry is important for normal development of the face and jaws.

Juvenile hallux valgus.

The development of painful degenerative hallux valgus in adult patients is commonly related to unrecognized or incompletely corrected foot conditions in the growing child or adolescent. A review of the anatomy, incidence, and etiology of the deformity is presented. Early treatment of juvenile hallux valgus and predisposing factors is advocated. Basic surgical criteria is outlined.

Building the Capacity of Adolescents as Researchers: The Co-Creation of the Health Hive Online Course.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent engagement is critical to ensuring research meets adolescent health and well-being needs; however, it is not common practice. To maintain research quality, meaningful adolescent engagement requires tailored support and training, yet limited resources exist globally. This study aimed to describe the co-creation process and outputs of developing a freely accessible online course to build adolescent research capacity in public health (14-24 years). METHODS: An iterative participatory co-creation research design with four stages, grounded in Positive Youth Development Theor

Parents' Gratitude Lability and Its Associations With Adolescents' Psychological Well-Being and Prosocial Behaviors: The Roles of Adolescents' Gratitude and Gender.

Parents play an important role in adolescents' gratitude development, yet little is known about whether and how fluctuations in parents' gratitude (i.e., gratitude lability) over time are associated with adolescents' socioemotional adjustment. Using three-wave data spanning 16 months, this study examined the longitudinal associations between parents' gratitude lability and adolescents' socioemotional outcomes, including depressive symptoms, life satisfaction, and prosocial behaviors, in 537 Chinese parent-adolescent dyads (MChild age = 10.25 years, SD = 0.69; 57.3% girls). Social emotional learning and autonomic regulation enhance social connectedness in female adolescents with extensive exposure to adverse childhood experiences.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with social isolation, a known contributor to diminishing mental health with consequences for adolescent development. We evaluated effects of the SKY Schools program, which combines social emotional learning (SEL) with training in autonomic regulation (breathwork), on social connectedness (SC) in female Latinx adolescents with high ACEs, a group particularly vulnerable to ACEs effects. In this longitudinal study, female Latinx students (N = 174, 14-18 years; M = 14.97; SD = 0.97) in two Southern California high schools with high (≥4) and low …

Severe Hyperandrogenism Revealing a 46,XY Disorder of Sex Development Due to a Novel NR5A1 Mutation.

46,XY disorders of sex development (DSDs) are rare congenital conditions resulting from impaired gonadal differentiation and/or steroidogenesis. The NR5A1 gene encodes steroidogenic factor 1 (SF-1), a key regulator of gonadal development and endocrine function, and pathogenic variants are associated with a broad phenotypic spectrum that may present beyond the neonatal period. We report the case of a 12-year-and-6-month-old phenotypic female adolescent presenting with severe hirsutism, acne, primary amenorrhea, and progressive virilization. Hormonal evaluation demonstrated hyperandrogenism with

Pulmonary function and physical performance in adolescent e-cigarette users: a narrative review.

Adolescent e-cigarette use has risen sharply worldwide and poses emerging threats to respiratory health. As adolescence represents a critical window for lung growth and aerobic capacity, inhalation of toxicants during this period may disrupt pulmonary development and exercise performance. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the physiological and behavioral consequences of vaping in youth. Clinical and epidemiological studies indicate that adolescents who vape report higher rates of respiratory symptoms, such as chronic cough, wheezing, and shortness of breath, and may exhibit

Social jetlag longitudinally predicts internalizing and externalizing behavior for adolescent females, but not males.

Biological changes contribute to preferences for later bed and wake times during adolescence, yet the social constraints of school start times necessitate early wake times. This often results in social jetlag (i.e. misalignment between preferred sleep timing on weekends and school days). We examined whether social jetlag predicts adolescent internalizing and externalizing behavior over time and/or whether associations differ based on sex. We used data from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development Study (n = 767) to test whethe

Overweight and executive functions, psychological and behavioral profile of Spanish adolescents.

The prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents has risen dramatically increasing a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases and cognitive dysfunctions. This study aimed to analyze differences in the executive function´s development between overweight and normal-weight adolescents. As a secondary objective, we aimed to assess differences in adolescents' psychological and behavioral profiles between groups. In order to achieve the study's aim, 105 adolescent students (17.61 ± 7.43 years) completed an online questionnaire that analyzed variables regarding their exe

A Package of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Interventions-What Does It Mean for Adolescents?

This article analyzes the relevance of the comprehensive definition of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) to adolescents and identifies adolescent-specific implications for the implementation of an essential package of SRHR interventions. The delivery of a comprehensive approach to SRHR targeting adolescents is underpinned by five principles-equity, quality, accountability, multisectorality, and meaningful engagement. All SRHR interventions included in the package are relevant to adolescents, given the diversity of adolescents' SRHR needs and considering their specific attributes

Neurodegenerative-related gene rescue in anterior insula after early life maltreatment restores adult social interaction in male mice.

Maltreatment in adolescence poses a major public health crisis as a primary factor for the development of adult psychiatric disorders. The anterior insula (AI) has been implicated as a hub in adult psychiatric disorders but the gene expression profile of AI in psychiatric disease in either humans or animal models is unknown. RNA sequencing of AI in adult male mice exposed to maltreatment in adolescence revealed altered expression of multiple ribosomal proteins and genes related to neurodegeneration. AI-specific neuronal rescue of a top RNA binding protein target, Hnrnpa2b1, in adulthood after

Adolescent Sexual Health: A Focus on the Sexual Health Portion of HEADSS Examination.

Sexual exploration is a natural part of adolescence, and most individuals will initiate sexual activity in their adolescent years. Privacy, confidentiality, and consent are crucial considerations in providing sexual health care to adolescents, with laws varying by state. References to gender in this article are primarily limited to the binary male-female due to lack of data representing the gender spectrum. We aim to reframe the conversation and offer tools to share with parents for productive conversations with their teens. Sex-positive parenting and the involvement of parents in promoting he
