Anatomy of a new paired tract of the pineal gland in humans.

The human pineal gland and it anterior attachments were investigated grossly in the fresh state and microscopically in the sagittal plane and 25 degrees tangential to the coronal plane of sectioning. Fiber stains of tissue samples from the midline commissural attachments of the pineal gland indicated the presence of both myelinated and non-myelinated fibers connecting the pineal gland and the pre-tectal area. A previously unreported paired fiber tract was observed associated with the anterior inferio-ventro-lateral pineal gland. This paired tract appears to be physically separate and distinct

Toward an agreement on terminology of nuclear and subnuclear divisions of the motor thalamus.

The nomenclature most commonly applied to the motor-related nuclei of the human thalamus differs substantially from that applied to the thalamus of other primates, from which most knowledge of input-output connections is derived. Knowledge of these connections in the human is a prerequisite for stereotactic neurosurgical approaches designed to alleviate movement disorders by the placement of lesions in specific nuclei. Transfer to humans of connectional information derived from experimental studies in nonhuman primates requires agreement about the equivalence of nuclei in the different species

New aspects of gastric adaptive relaxation, reflex after food intake for more food: involvement of capsaicin-sensitive sensory nerves and nitric oxide.

To accommodate the intake of food or liquid, gastric reservoir functions are important as the physiological reflex. There exist two major responses as a reservoir function of the stomach; adaptive and receptive relaxations. Adaptive relaxation is a reflex in which the fundus of the stomach dilates in response to small increases in intragastric pressure when food enters the stomach. Receptive relaxation is a reflex in which the gastric fundus dilates when food passes down the pharynx and the esophagus. The mechanisms of these two types of functional responses are to some extent different, altho

Cholinergic innervation and receptors in the cerebellum.

We have studied the source and ultrastructural characteristics of ChAT-immunoreactive fibers in the cerebellum of the rat, and the distribution of muscarinic and nicotinic receptors in the cerebellum of the rat, rabbit, cat and monkey, in order to define which of the cerebellar afferents may use ACh as a neurotransmitter, what target structures are they, and which cholinergic receptor mediate the actions of these pathways. Our data confirm and extend previous observations that cholinergic markers occur at relatively low density in the cerebellum and show not only interspecies variability, but

A neurobiological model for Tourette syndrome centered on the nucleus accumbens.

Tourette syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by chronic multiple motor and vocal tics with a fluctuating course and modulated by internal and external environmental events. Tourette syndrome is more prevalent in males than females, and is associated with behavioural disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Tourette syndrome symptoms are commonly attenuated by dopaminergic antagonists and adrenergic agonists, and usually exacerbated by psychostimulants. In this paper, I propose that dysfunction centered on the nucleus accumbens repre

Algesics excite axotomised afferent nerve fibres within the first hours following nerve transection in rats.

The direct consequences of a peripheral nerve injury at the lesion site itself are often twofold: axons of afferent (and efferent) nerve fibres are transected and the tissue surrounding the nerve injury site is inflamed. Recent studies have shown that a few hours after nerve transection, axotomised myelinated (A) and unmyelinated (C) afferents may respond to mechanical and thermal stimuli applied to the cut nerve end. Here, 5-24 h after sural nerve ligation and transection we studied the ectopic excitability of axotomised cutaneous A and C fibres by chemical agents, most of which excite affere

Extraocular proprioception is required for spatial localization in man.

We studied the effect of extraocular muscle deafferentation on the performance of manual pointing to foveated visual targets at different craniotopic locations. Five patients who underwent unilateral thermocoagulation of the trigeminal nerve (V) for trigeminal neuralgia were tested before and after surgery. Only the group of patients with postsurgical corneal anaesthesia, attesting to involvement of the ophthalmic branch (which carries the ocular proprioceptive fibres), presented deficits in accuracy of pointing. The position of initial and final pointing was shifted toward the lesioned side p

Silent ischemia as a central problem: regional brain activation compared in silent and painful myocardial ischemia.

OBJECTIVE: To test whether the silence of painless myocardial ischemia is caused by abnormal handling by the central nervous system of afferent messages from the heart. DESIGN: Nonrandomized study. SETTING: A tertiary referral center (postgraduate medical school). PATIENTS: 2 matched groups of nondiabetic patients with coronary artery disease. Group A consisted of nine patients with reproducible stress-induced angina; group B consisted of nine patients with reproducible stress-induced myocardial ischemia but no angina. INTERVENTIONS: Intravenous placebo infusion and low-dose (5 and 10 micr

Hemispherical deafferentation: an alternative to functional hemispherectomy.

An alternative technique for so-called functional hemispherectomy has been developed to be used for the classical indications of hemispherectomy or the various modifications of functional hemispherectomy. The technique entails a smaller trepanation, less operation time, and less blood loss, and it leaves more brain tissue in place as compared with other functional hemispherectomy techniques. It starts with either hippocampectomy alone or with hippocampectomy and anterior temporal lobectomy. After this, deafferentation of the white matter of the temporal, occipital, parietal, and frontal lobe,

Relationship between changes of glomus cell current and neural response of rat carotid body.

1. Mature rat carotid bodies were harvested and sinus nerve activity was recorded in vitro during superfusion with Ringer saline. Membrane currents of glomus cells were simultaneously recorded using conventional whole cell or perforated-patch whole cell recording. Presumptive glomus cells were identified by the presence of a rapidly activated, voltage-dependent outward current above a threshold of -20 mV. 2. Outward current of presumptive glomus cells was inhibited by tetraethylammonium chloride (TEA) (20 mM) and by verapamil (5-10 microM), consistent with previous studies in which isolated gl

Sympathetic and afferent neurones projecting into forelimb and trunk nerves and the anatomical organization of the thoracic sympathetic outflow of the rat.

The anatomy of the cervicothoracic sympathetic nerves was studied in the rat. Details of the arrangements of white and grey rami communicantes and superior cervical, middle cervical and stellate ganglia are given. Dorsal root and sympathetic ganglion neurones projecting to skin and muscle of the forelimb and trunk were labelled retrogradely with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in order to study their number, segmental distribution and location. HRP was applied to forelimb nerves supplying skeletal muscles (Ramus profundus of radial nerve, RP) or hairy skin (N. cutaneus brachii lateralis superior

Effect of dopamine on carotid chemoreceptor activity in newborn kittens.

In newborn kittens, intravenous bolus injections of dopamine may be inhibitory or excitatory to the carotid chemosensory activity. In order to further identify the role of dopaminergic mechanisms on the chemosensory activity in the kitten, 10 anesthetized, paralyzed and artificially ventilated kittens aged from 1 to 21 days were studied. The activity of a few chemoafferent fibers from one carotid sinus nerve was recorded at three levels of FiO2 in N2, 21, 8 and 100%, before and during a continuous dopamine infusion at a dose of 10 micrograms/kg/min. The immediate effect of dopamine usually was

The immediate effects of peripheral denervation on inhibitory mechanisms in the somatosensory thalamus.

Multiunit recordings were made in the ventroposterior lateral nucleus of the thalamus in anesthetized raccoons. During recording from cells responding to cutaneous stimulation of a forepaw digit, the corresponding digit was denervated permanently (by cutting its four digital nerves) or temporarily (by injecting lidocaine into the base of the digit). Both procedures resulted in immediate increases in the inhibition that could be induced by stimulation of the adjacent digits when the original cutaneous receptive field was on the glabrous skin. In each case with temporary denervation, this enhanc

Cerebral potentials evoked by electrical stimulation of the anal canal.

We describe the procedure with which cortical potential responses are evoked by a stimulation of the anal canal to assess the integrity of its sensory pathways. These potentials were recorded in 66 patients. In 44 patients, a cortical evoked response was obtained with a succession of positive and negative peaks, W shaped (35 cases) or V shaped (nine cases). In seven cases, cortical responses were interpreted differently by two independent observers. In these seven patients, such differences could be explained by an insufficient amplification of the recorded electrical waves recorded on paper (

Synaptic mechanisms of cortical representational plasticity: somatosensory and corticocortical EPSPs in reorganized raccoon SI cortex.

1. Reorganizations of representational maps have been described for a variety of sensory and motor regions of cerebral neocortex in several species. The purpose of this study was to investigate synaptic mechanisms of the reorganizations of primary somatosensory cortex that follow removal of a digit or the joining of two digits into a syndactyly. We examined neurons in the cortical representation of digit 4 (d4). Intracellular recording was used to compare somatosensory and corticocortical excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) in normal raccoons, with EPSPs recorded in two experimental gro

[The mechanisms of the formation of cardiogenic afferent effects after the development of local immune damage to the heart].

Sensitivity of cardiac receptors to several substances after local immune heart damage and the nature of cardiogenic influences on the circulation were studied in acute experiments o anesthetized dogs. The depressor reflexes from the heart were shown to disappear during 30 min. after immune heart damage, and vagal afferent impulse activity decreased. After immune heart damage, cardiac sympathetic afferent fibres were more sensitive to endogenous biological substances than to vagal ones. The sympathetic cardiac afferent system is found to be more sensitive to chemical agents, which is a decisiv

Estrous cycle variation of afferent fibers supplying reproductive organs in the female rat.

Multi-unit afferent nerve activity was recorded from branches of the hypogastric and pelvic nerves in virgin female rats on different days of the estrous cycle. In each rat, the response of hypogastric nerve fibers to uterine distension and the response of pelvic nerve fibers to vaginal distension was tested. The minimal pressure necessary to evoke a response was highest in diestrus for both the hypogastric and pelvic nerve fibers. For the hypogastric nerve, the minimal necessary pressures were significantly lower during both proestrus and estrus, whereas for the pelvic nerve, the pressure was

Toe graphaesthesia as a discriminator of brain impairment: the outstanding feet for neuropsychology.

Because of the vulnerability of the medial surfaces of the cerebral hemispheres to the consequences of shear forces, we hypothesized that quantitative sensori-motor deficits for the feet would be strong indicators of general brain dysfunction. On the basis of the Halstead-Reitan Impairment Index, 28 adults who had received closed head injuries were assigned to perfectly normal, normal, or (mildly to severely) impaired groups. Foot tap and finger tap as well as agnosia and graphaesthesia for the fingers and toes were measured. Deficits in toe graphaesthesia were the most powerful group discrimi

Atypical odontalgia.

Atypical odontalgia describes atypical facial pain in apparently normal teeth. Unfortunately, dentists usually consider this diagnosis only after the failure of invasive treatment. Atypical odontalgia patients are typified by women in their mid-40s who complain of persistent pain in one or more premolar or molar teeth. They associate pain with dental procedures or trauma to the region. While the cause of atypical odontalgia is uncertain, deafferentation pain appears to be a plausible mechanism. This article reviews relevant aspects of this perplexing pain problem. To help avert the untimely di

Afferent renal nerves and hypertension.

Adenosine-sensitive nerve endings have been found in the renal pelvis which when stimulated increase sympathetic activity producing hypertension. When urinary adenosine concentration is lowered by intrarenal infusion of adenosine deaminase in one-kidney one-clip rats, peripheral sympathetic nervous system activity and arterial pressure decrease if the renal nerves are intact. These data suggest that a stimulus for afferent renal nerve activity in one-kidney, one-clip hypertension is intrarenal adenosine. This intrarenal adenosine hypertensive reflex was examined further observing the responses
