PURPOSE: To present two cases of pediatric Cogan Syndrome and to highlight the differences between the adult and pediatric forms of the disease, as well as the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.

RESULTS: Corneal lesions were much more diffuse than those observed in adult Cogan syndrome. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the epidemiological characteristics of the sensory heterotropia cases seen in the Opthamology Department of Douala General Hospital between November 1991 and November 1999. Sensory heterotropia accounted for 22.5% of the cases of strabismus reported. Onset was before the age of one year in 80.4% of cases and after the age of one year in 19.6% of cases. The authors reviewed the ocular findings in 49 patients with facial microsomias not considered part of a known syndrome. Five patients had bifacial microsomia, and 44 patients had hemifacial microsomia. Results of the author's first 15 cases of epikeratophakia for keratoconus are presented. All patients were intolerant of contact lens correction and could not achieve satisfactory acuity with spectacle correction due to corneal ectasia and irregular astigmatism. The average follow-up was 13 months. Seventy-three per cent of eyes treated had a pre-operative spectacle acuity of 6/60 or worse. Although cataract surgery is feasible in children with unilateral cataracts, visual rehabilitation depends on optical correction and conscientiously maintained amblyopia therapy.
