Anorectic activity of prostaglandin precursors.

1 Intraperitoneal and intragastric (i.g.) administration of prostaglandin precursors arachidonic (2 mg, 15 mg/kg, i.p; 30 mg/kg i.g.), linolenic (100 mg/kg i.p.; 200 mg/kg, i.g.) and linoleic (15, 100 mg/kg, i.p.; 100 mg/kg, i.g.) acids to 22 h food-deprived rats inhibits food intake. 2 This anorexia is similar to that induced by prostaglandin F2alpha (1 mg/kg, i.p.). 3 At anorectic doses these fatty acids do not cause pyrexia, in fact arachidonic acid causes hypothermia. 4 Prior treatment with indomethacin (15 mg/kg) and paracetamol (50 mg/kg) specifically reverses the anorexia and the behavi

Breastfeeding and prevention of childhood obesity: a narrative review of behavioral, hormonal, and microbiome programming.

Childhood obesity has emerged as a major public health concern worldwide, with increasing prevalence in high-income countries. Growing evidence suggests that early-life nutrition, particularly breastfeeding, plays a critical role in reducing obesity that shaping long-term metabolic health. This narrative review highlight association between breastfeeding duration, exclusivity, and childhood obesity risk, synthesizing current evidence while exploring potential biological and behavioral mechanisms. Most studies report that breastfeeding, particularly when exclusive and sustained for longer durat

Avoiding Malnutrition in the Era of Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Medications: Emerging Evidence and Opportunities for Integrated Nutrition Care.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1)-based therapies have transformed obesity treatment, resulting in significant weight loss and broad metabolic improvements. However, their rapid adoption has outpaced the development of adequate nutritional support systems, leaving many patients without dietary guidance despite experiencing profound reductions in appetite and food intake. People often drastically cut their energy consumption, risking inadequate protein intake, micronutrient deficiencies, low fiber intake, and loss of lean mass, consequences that are largely preventable with proper guidance. Yet,

Opposing Estrous Cycle-Dependent Norepinephrine and Dopamine Regulation in Response to Methamphetamine.

The central catecholamine systems, norepinephrine and dopamine, play a critical role in encoding the valence of environmental stimuli to promote engagement in behaviors that potentiate an organism's survival. Furthermore, both neurochemicals in limbic brain areas such as the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) are major targets of stimulant drugs. Canonically, limbic norepinephrine signaling is enhanced in the presence of aversive or noxious stimuli whereas dopamine transmission is generally considered to increase in response to appetitive or rewarding stimul

Approach-avoidance conflict recruits lateral frontoparietal and cinguloinsular networks in a predator-prey game setting.

Objects associated with both reward and threat produce approach-avoidance conflict (AAC). Although our day-to-day encounters with AAC objects are dynamic and interactive, the cognitive neuroscience literature on AAC is largely based on experiments that use static stimuli. Here, we used a dynamic, interactive, video-game environment to test neural substrates implicated in processing AAC in a more ecologically valid setting. While undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), subjects (N = 31) played a predator-prey video game, guiding an avatar through a maze containing six types of

Neuropeptides and the Autonomic Nervous System in Prader-Willi Syndrome.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare, multisymptomatic genetic disorder caused by the absence or dysfunction of specific genes on chromosome 15. The genetic abnormality is anticipated to cause a dysfunction of the hypothalamus, which is also central in the regulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Typical symptoms of PWS indicating a hypothalamic dysfunction include muscular hypotonia, poor growth, short stature, and feeding difficulties in infancy, which in early childhood are replaced by hyperphagia, leading to a high risk of obesity. Other characteristics, such as sleep difficultie

Impact of motor dysfunction on neuropsychiatric symptom profile in patients with autopsy-confirmed Alzheimer's disease.

Motor dysfunction, which includes changes in gait, balance, and/or functional mobility, is a lesser-known feature of Alzheimer's Disease (AD), especially as it relates to the development of neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS). This study (1) compared rates of NPS between autopsy-confirmed AD patients with and without early-onset motor dysfunction and (2) compared rates of non-AD dementia autopsy pathology (Lewy Body disease, Frontotemporal Lobar degeneration) between these groups. This retrospective longitudinal cohort study utilized National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC) data. Participan

Antemortem Diagnosis and Successful Long-term Management of Disseminated Intracoelomic Xanthogranulomatous Disease in an Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus).

A 12-year-old male eclectus parrot (Eclectus roratus) was referred for evaluation of coelomic distention. Computed tomography and blood work revealed coelomic effusion with free coelomic mineral-attenuating material and elevations in the bile acids and aspartate aminotransferase activity, respectively. Coelomic effusion was consistent with macrophagic inflammation with abundant intracellular lipids. Initial treatment with meloxicam resulted in minimal patient improvement. Disseminated xanthogranulomatous inflammation was suspected based on imaging and diagnostic laboratory results, which were

A case control study investigating the methylation levels of GHRL and GHSR genes in alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a relapsing disease described as excessive use of alcohol. Evidence of the role of DNA methylation in addiction is accumulating. Ghrelin is an important peptide known as appetite hormone and its role in addictive behavior has been identified. Here we aimed to determine the methylation levels of two crucial genes (GHRL and GHSR) in ghrelin signaling and further investigate the association between methylation ratios and plasma ghrelin levels. METHODS: Individuals diagnosed with (n = 71) and without (n = 82) AUD were recruited in this study. DNA methylat

Eating problems in people with dementia with Lewy bodies: Associations with various symptoms and the physician's understanding.

OBJECTIVES: Eating problems frequently occur in people with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), but few studies have investigated the clinical background of this phenomenon. This study examined the relationship between eating problems and various symptoms of DLB and the relation between the treatment needs for DLB people with eating problems and the understanding of their eating problems by caregivers and physicians. DESIGN, MEASUREMENTS, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a subanalysis of a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey study. Two hundred sixty-one subjects with DLB were divided into subj

Utility of in-session assessments during cognitive behavioral therapy for depression after traumatic brain injury: Results from a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The development of depression after moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is common. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can be used to treat post-TBI depression, but the symptoms response is poorly described. OBJECTIVE: This secondary analysis assessed: (1) the trajectory of depression symptoms up to 12 sessions of CBT, (2) which depressive symptom clusters were responsive to in-person and phone CBT, and (3) whether interim depression thresholds predict 16-week treatment response. METHOD: This secondary analysis of the IRB-approved Life Improvement Following Traumatic B

Art therapy and brain injury: making the invisible visible.

The multiple cognitive, somatic, and behavioral changes following head injuries can result in expressive language difficulties that may not be resolved quickly. This paper explores the traumatic brain injury and post-concussive syndrome artwork created by an art therapist and the child of an art therapist, making the invisible neurological consequences of head injuries visible. Our first-person and caregiver perspectives offer examples of visual arts-based communication between patients, health professionals, and family members. Utilizing client imagery as a form of communication may improve p

Correlates of chronic depression in the general population: results from the CoLaus|PsyCoLaus study.

PURPOSE: Previous population-based studies have partially provided inconsistent results regarding the co-variates of chronic depression, which were likely to be attributable to methodological limitations. The present paper that compared people with chronic major depressive disorder (MDD), non-chronic MDD and no mood disorder in the community focused on specific atypical and melancholic depression symptoms and subtypes of MDD, family history (FH) of mood disorders, measured physical cardio-vascular risk factors (CVRF), personality traits, coping style and adverse life-events. METHODS: Data ste

Metastatic diffuse follicular variant papillary thyroid cancer without cervical lymph node metastasis presenting with symptoms related to hypopituitarism.

In this article, we present a case of diffuse follicular variant papillary thyroid carcinoma with pituitary metastasis, which is a rare cause of pituitary metastasis. The follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma is an uncommon variant of papillary carcinoma. A 74-year-old male was presented with weakness, fatigue, and a decreased appetite. The patient was diagnosed with secondary adrenal and thyroid insufficiencies. Imaging revealed a pituitary mass with suprasellar extension, right cavernous sinus invasion, and optic chiasm compression. Thyroid ultrasonography revealed a nodule with

Psychopathological intersection between obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder: scoping review of similarities and differences.

INTRODUCTION: Although post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder have distinct diagnostic criteria, some psychopathological phenomena seem to be shared, which may lead to misdiagnosis and erroneous treatment decisions. This scoping review explores the psychopathological similarities and differences between these two disorders. METHOD: The review complies with the recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and included articles published in Portuguese, English, or Spanish in the last 50 years indexed in the PubMed d

Lymphangioma: A Rare Benign Cystic Pancreatic Lesion.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Pancreatic lesions are more commonly identified nowadays with the widespread use of imaging investigations. Pancreatic lesions are heterogeneous groups of pathologies with different behavior and prognosis. It is quite difficult to differentiate these lesions because of the shared clinical manifestation and the overlapping imaging features of these lesions. We report the case of a 38-year-old woman who presented with a complaint of a 3-month history of epigastric abdominal pain radiating to her back. She reported a gradual increase in the severity of the pain. She described it as sharp in quali
