BACKGROUND: Childhood acute respiratory symptoms (ARSs) remain an important public health concern in South Asia, but meteorological associations may not be transferable across climatically diverse settings. Studies that rely on pooled regional estimates or single exposure metrics may therefore obscure meaningful heterogeneity. We examined whether associations of childhood ARSs with temperature and vapour pressure deficit (VPD) differed across macroclimatic regimes in four South Asian countries.
METHODS: We analysed Demographic and Health Survey data from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Timor-Le

Over the past few decades, climate warming has caused profound changes in our living environment, and human diseases, including infectious diseases, have also been influenced by these changes. However, it remains unclear if a warm-wet climate can influence the infectivity of influenza and result in influenza pandemics. This study focused on observations of how the hydrothermal environment influences the infectivity of the influenza virus and the resulting immunoreactions of the infected mice. We used a manual climatic box to establish the following 3 environments with different temperatures an

Warming spring temperatures increase the risk of frost damage to emerging Norway spruce (Picea abies) buds by advancing their spring phenology and increasing the frost event frequency. We present a field-based electrolyte leakage assay to assess basal frost tolerance in newly emerging buds. Using this assay, we estimated genetic parameters and tested the effectiveness of multivariate genomic selection (GS) models integrating frost tolerance, bud burst phenology, and height growth. Multivariate models significantly improved frost tolerance prediction accuracy, particularly when incorporating bu

Local knowledge of when humans are at elevated risk for exposure to tick vectors of human disease agents is required both for the effective use of personal protection measures to avoid tick bites and for implementation of control measures to suppress host-seeking ticks. Here, we used previously published data on the seasonal density of host-seeking Ixodes pacificus Cooley and Kohls nymphs, the primary vectors of Lyme disease spirochetes in the far western USA, collected across a broad habitat and climate gradient in northwestern California to identify predictors of periods of time within the y

Estimating the risks heat waves pose to human health is a critical part of assessing the future impact of climate change. In this article, we propose a flexible class of time series models to estimate the relative risk of mortality associated with heat waves and conduct Bayesian model averaging (BMA) to account for the multiplicity of potential models. Applying these methods to data from 105 U.S. cities for the period 1987-2005, we identify those cities having a high posterior probability of increased mortality risk during heat waves, examine the heterogeneity of the posterior distributions of

The plant microbiome, an essential component of the plant holobiont, plays key roles in promoting plant growth, enhancing stress tolerance, improving nutrient use efficiency, and mitigating the effects of climate change. Harnessing the plant microbiome would support the transition toward sustainable agriculture by reducing our reliance on chemical inputs and strengthening ecosystem function. Over the past decades, Chinese researchers have made significant progress in plant microbiome research and have gained increasing international recognition. In this review, we summarize major advances in e

Existing studies have documented associations between daily temperature fluctuations and pain, but less is known about the sustained effects of temperature patterns over longer periods. This study is among the first to examine how prolonged exposure to extreme cold and heat over months and years shapes high-impact chronic pain (HICP) outcomes, including HICP reporting, two-year HICP incidence, and two-year HICP recovery. We linked Health and Retirement Study data (1998-2022) with census tract-level temperature data and applied hierarchical logistic models. Results indicate that high long-term

BACKGROUND: Corals are increasingly threatened by global climate change, which may lead to shifts in their community on geographic scales. Reef-building corals are mixotrophic and may increase heterotrophy to bolster their resilience to environmental stress. However, many studies only focus on trophic strategies at the species or genus level, overlooking whether the change in these strategies may cause community shifts.
RESULTS: Prior to potential summer thermal events, we collected coral samples and classified them into different groups based on the shortest distance from the inner edge of t

Utilizing organic materials in farmland to synergistically enhance food security and mitigate climate change represents a key research frontier. However, a clear consensus is lacking regarding their overall impacts on crop yield, soil carbon sequestration, and greenhouse gas emissions, leading to considerable debate about this practice. Therefore, this study systematically quantified the effects and underlying mechanisms of incorporating four types of organic materials (straw, manure, biofertilizer, and biochar) by integrating 4624 field observations from 668 global studies using meta-analysis

Lodging is a major constraint in maize production, causing significant yield losses, reduced grain quality, and harvesting inefficiencies, thereby posing a serious challenge to global food security and climate-resilient agriculture. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the genetic, physiological, and agronomic determinants of maize lodging resistance and evaluates holistic strategies for improving tolerance to lodging stress. Recent advances in quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping, genome-wide association studies (GWAS), functional gene characterization, genome editing, high-throughp

BACKGROUND: Haemodialysis (HD) has a significant environmental footprint due to its high resource consumption and waste generation. A key component is dialysate production, which typically involves mixing water, bicarbonate, and a single-use acid concentrate bag for each session. An alternative method is the central delivery of acid concentrate, prepared on-site using dry powder formulations. This study compares the environmental impact of these two delivery systems, focusing on waste reduction, elimination of single-use plastic, and decreased transport-related emissions.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been predicted to worsen with rising ambient temperatures and climate change, though the causal association between temperature and antimicrobial resistance in Salmonella species remains unconfirmed. This study investigates the association between rising ambient temperatures and resistance to antimicrobials used to treat Salmonella bacteraemia in Queensland, Australia. Methods: Time-series analysis with distributed lag non-linear models was used to test associations between deseasonalised temperature and resistance to ampicillin, ciprofloxacin, ge

Achieving sex-based equity in organizational leadership roles has proven to be a 'wicked' problem with existing diversity initiatives providing minimal improvement. In this paper, we address this issue by considering a key inhibiter to women's leadership advancement-biased perceptions of female leaders' competence-and links to a climate for inclusion. In Study 1 (N = 236), we develop and validate a Diversity-Specific Empowering Leadership (DSEL) measure, and demonstrate its value in predicting perceptions of female leaders' competence when compared to alternative leadership models (empowering

Lakes are sources of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), contributing to global climate change. Temporal variations in lake CO2 emissions are pronounced, with algal growth and precipitation identified as important drivers. Eutrophic lakes often act as atmospheric CO2 sinks during the growing season. However, these lakes can also emit CO2 during the same period, a paradox that we hypothesize is driven by precipitation. This study tests this hypothesis and examines how rainstorms influence lake CO2 emissions. To investigate, seven buoys were deployed in eutrophic Lake Taihu and a major inflow rive

To date, research evidence suggests that extreme ambient temperatures may lead to preterm birth. Since the results of studies in subtropical humid monsoon climate are inconclusive, we investigated the association between extreme ambient temperatures and the risk of preterm birth in Xuzhou, China. We analyzed the association between the birth data of 103,876 singleton deliveries (from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2019) and ambient temperature. We used a quasi-Poisson model with distributed lag nonlinear models (DLNM) to investigate the delay and nonlinear effects of temperature, taking into account

Urban green parks perform a remarkable role for the physical, social and psychological wellbeing of the urban public by providing space for relaxation and recreation, directly influencing public health through mitigation of the urban heat impact, noise reduction and moderation of air and water pollution. An indicator-based approach on analytical hierarchical processing was used to identify and assess the driving forces for the utilization of urban green parks and their accessibility. Eight indicators: location, topography and geography, facility and services, safety and security, social and cu

Resulting mainly from atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) build-up, seawater temperature rise is among the most important climate change related factors affecting costal marine ecosystems. Global warming will have implications on the water cycle, increasing the risk of heavy rainfalls and consequent freshwater input into the oceans but also increasing the frequency of extreme drought periods with consequent salinity increase. For Europe, by the end of the century, projections describe an increase of CO2 concentration up to 1120 ppm (corresponding to 0.5 pH unit decrease), an increase in the water

The climatic variability hypothesis (CVH) is a cornerstone of thermal ecology, predicting the evolution of wider organismal thermal tolerance ranges in more thermally variable environments. Thermal tolerance ranges depend on both upper and lower tolerance limits (critical thermal maxima [[Formula: see text]] and critical thermal minima [[Formula: see text]]), which may show different responses to environmental gradients. To delineate the relative effects of mean and extreme temperatures on thermal tolerances, we conducted a within-latitude comparative test of CVH predictions for army ants (Dor

Atopic dermatitis (AD, also known as atopic eczema) is driven by a complex relationship between genetic predisposition and environmental exposures. We sought to determine the impact of specific climatic factors on the prevalence of AD in the United states. We used a merged analysis of the 2007 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) from a representative sample of 91,642 children aged 0-17 years and the 2006-2007 National Climate Data Center and Weather Service measurements of relative humidity (%), indoor heating degree days (HDD), clear-sky UV indices, ozone levels, and outdoor air tempe
