Nitric oxide-induced Na+/H+ exchange activity confers salt tolerance in pea (Pisum sativum L.) mesophyll cells.

Salinity stress severely hinders global agricultural productivity, and the issue will only increase under current climate scenarios. Due to complexity of salinity tolerance traits, crop breeding for salt tolerance remains a highly challenging task. The exogenous application of growth regulators, such as nitric oxide (NO), is considered a viable practical alternative to boost crop yield and quality under conditions of soil salinity. Numerous papers reported beneficial role of exogenous NO application on plant growth under salt stress, but very few explored the mechanistic basis of this process.

Robustness of gametogenesis in the scleractinian coral, Tubastraea aurea, in the shallow-water hydrothermal vent field off Kueishan Island, northeastern Taiwan.

Understanding the reproductive resiliency of scleractinian corals is imperative as ocean acidification and rising sea surface temperatures threaten the foundation of coral reef ecosystems. However, the limited temporal scales of laboratory and transplantation-based methods fail to consider evolutionary time frames offered by natural analogues of future climate conditions, like hydrothermal vents (HV). Accordingly, we characterized the presence of scleractinians surrounding a major shallow-water HV near Kueishan Island in northeastern Taiwan, identified a candidate species, Tubastraea aurea, an

Genomic Evidence for Elevational Segregation and Adaptive Introgression in Prunellidae Radiation.

Heterogeneous mountainous environments and climate fluctuations during glacial periods can accelerate speciation and adaptive evolution in mountainous species. However, the interplay between these processes and their collective impact on mountainous diversity remains poorly understood, particularly across broad geographic scales. We conducted a comparative genomic study of Prunellidae (accentors), an avian family distributed across Eurasian mountain chains. Our analyses revealed low genetic divergence among species (DXY ranging from 0.631 × 10-2 to 2.665 × 10-2). When separated by elevation, h

Research on Plant Landscape Design of Urban Industrial Site Green Space Based on Green Infrastructure Concept.

With the acceleration of the global urbanization process, more and more industrial plants are being abandoned, which puts great pressure on urban ecology and land resource management. These abandoned industrial spaces not only lead to persistent pollution problems, but also exacerbate the urban heat island effect, leading to a worsening microclimate. To address these issues, the concept of green infrastructure (GI) has emerged as a sustainable ecological restoration strategy, and it is an important tool for urban renewal and industrial land transformation. In this study, the landscape environm

Foliar Traits Drive Chlorophyll Fluorescence Variability in Chilean Sclerophyllous Species Under Early Outplanting Stress.

The photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) was monitored in two-year-old seedlings from six Chilean woody sclerophyllous species differing in foliage habits (evergreen, deciduous, semi-deciduous) and leaf orientation. A common garden experiment was established in July 2020 in a Mediterranean-type climate site under two watering regimes (2 L-1 seedling-1 week-1 for 5 months versus no irrigation). Chlorophyll a fluorescence rise kinetics (OJIP) and JIP test analysis were monitored from December 2021 to January 2022. The semi-deciduous Colliguaja odorifera (leaf angle of 65°) exhibited

Research trends in Rift Valley fever virus: a bibliometric analysis from 1936 to 2024.

BACKGROUND: Rift Valley fever (RVF), first identified in Kenya in 1930, is a viral zoonosis transmitted by arthropods and poses significant risks to both public and animal health. Despite the wealth of published studies on the disease, the number of bibliometric analysis of Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is limited. This study utilized bibliometric analysis to identify research hotspots and emerging trends in RVFV studies, aiming to offer new insights and strategic references for future research directions and prevention strategies. METHODS: The study utilized Scopus to collect global publica

The Role of Geometry on the Ease of Solidification Inside and Out of Cylindrical Nanopores.

We investigated the role of a nanoporous particle on the formation of macroscopic solid in the framework of equilibrium thermodynamics and from the free-energy perspective. The model particle has cylindrical pores with equidistant circular openings on the particle surface. We focused on two potentially limiting steps: (i) the solid nucleation from liquid inside a single pore and (ii) the bridging of multiple pores on the particle surface. We examined the nucleation near the liquid-vapor meniscus inside a pore by considering different solid-vapor and solid-pore wall contact angles, as well as t

Take a deep BReath: Manipulating brassinosteroid homeostasis helps cereals adapt to environmental stress.

Global climate change leads to the increased occurrence of environmental stress (including drought and heat stress) during the vegetative and reproductive stages of cereal crop development. Thus, more attention should be given to developing new cereal cultivars with improved tolerance to environmental stress. However, during the development of new stress-tolerant cereal cultivars, the balance between improved stress responses (which occur at the expense of growth) and plant yield needs to be maintained. Thus, the urgent need for developing new cereal germplasm with improved stress tolerance co

Sleep health among youth outside of the gender binary: Findings from a national Canadian sample.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep is important for adolescent health. The unique needs of suprabinary youth (youth with gender identities outside of the gender binary), along with the growing number of youth with these identities, underscores the need to better understand sleep health within this population. The current study's objectives were to (1) examine differences in sleep health between suprabinary and binary youth and (2) explore how social support, peer victimization, and technology use accounted for these differences. METHODS: Data were drawn from the 2017/2018 Health Behavior in School Aged Childr

Disruptions and adaptations of an urban nutrition intervention delivering essential services for women and children during a major health system crisis in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Systematic crises may disrupt well-designed nutrition interventions. Continuing services requires understanding the intervention paths that have been disrupted and adapting as crises permit. Alive & Thrive developed an intervention to integrate nutrition services into urban antenatal care services in Dhaka, which started at the onset of COVID-19 and encountered extraordinary disruption of services. We investigated the disruptions and adaptations that occurred to continue the delivery of services for women and children and elucidated how the intervention team made those adaptations. We examined

Interactions between volatile air pollutants and atmospheric water production - Effects of chemical properties, mechanisms, and transfer processes.

Regional water scarcity is among the most urgent challenges of global climate change. Atmospheric water harvesting is a promising method to mitigate these challenges, and the atmospheric water generator (AWG) is already an established technology. Although this method can produce over 10,000 L of water per day, the water's quality has not been studied in depth. Air pollutants, especially volatile organic compounds (VOCs), are potential contaminants of water produced from air. We evaluated the chemical and physical parameters of different VOCs that might influence their ability to be transferred

Nitrite stimulates HONO and NOx but not N2O emissions in Chinese agricultural soils during nitrification.

The long-lived greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) and short-lived reactive nitrogen (Nr) gases such as ammonia (NH3), nitrous acid (HONO), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are produced and emitted from fertilized soils and play a critical role for climate warming and air quality. However, only few studies have quantified the production and emission potentials for long- and short-lived gaseous nitrogen (N) species simultaneously in agricultural soils. To link the gaseous N species to intermediate N compounds [ammonium (NH4+), hydroxylamine (NH2OH), and nitrite (NO2-)] and estimate their temperature ch

Cardiovascular Drug Administration Errors During Neuraxial Anesthesia or Analgesia-A Narrative Review.

The prevalence and harm associated with inadvertent neuraxial cardiovascular (CV) medication administration errors are unknown. This review aims to analyze neuraxial CV drug administration errors and associated clinical consequences. The secondary objective is to identify the causes and contributory factors in order to prevent future incidents. The author reviewed reports of accidental administration of CV medications via neuraxial routes during spinal or epidural anesthesia or analgesia published in the last 5 decades (1972-2022). Twenty-seven publications reported neuraxial administration of

The OSSE: Development and validation of an "Objective Structured Supervision Evaluation".

BACKGROUND: Trainee supervision and teaching are distinct skills that both require faculty physician competence to ensure patient safety. No standard approach exists to teach physician supervisory competence, resulting in variable trainee oversight and safety threats. The Objective Structured Teaching Evaluation (OSTE) does not adequately incorporate the specific skills required for effective supervision. To address this continuing medical education gap, the authors aimed to develop and identify validity evidence for an "Objective Structured Supervision Evaluation" (OSSE) for attending physici

Prevalence of sibling-species of Anopheles (Cellia) fluviatilis complex in Himachal Pradesh, India.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Malaria is one of the most infectious and life-threatening vector borne disease in the tropics. Climate change can significantly influence malaria epidemiology and expansion of malaria vectors to hilly regions of Himachal Pradesh in India, hitherto considered areas of low transmission. Entomological surveillance in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh revealed high density of a proven efficient vector of malaria, Anopheles fluviatilis, but transmission intensity of malaria was found very low. It was therefore considered prudent to investigate the sibling-species composi

From intent to implementation: Factors affecting public involvement in life science research.

Public involvement is key to closing the gap between research production and research use, and the only way to achieving ultimate transparency in science. The majority of life science research is not public-facing, but is funded by the public and impacts communities. We undertook an exploratory survey of researchers within the life sciences to better understand their views and perceived challenges to involving the public in their research. As survey response rate could not be determined, interpretation of the results must be cautious. We had a valid response cohort of n = 110 researchers, of w

Controlled hypobaric hypoxia increases immunological tolerance by modifying HLA-G expression, a potential therapy to inflammatory diseases.

One of the most striking characteristics of human beings is the incredible capacity to adapt to different environments. This capacity allowed humans to spread all over our planet, occupying habitats as diverse as deserts, tropical forests or tundra regions. Interactions with the environment, climate, food and water availability shaped our evolution and define our survival. Essential to human life, oxygen availability also controls human dispersion and adaptation. For example, low oxygen availability can lead to physiological adaptations in populations living in highlands. Moreover, the consequ

Infection patterns of dengue, Zika and endosymbiont Wolbachia in the mosquito Aedes albopictus in Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: The mosquito Aedes albopictus is a vector of dengue and Zika viruses. Insecticide-resistant mosquito populations have evolved in recent decades, suggesting that new control strategies are needed. Hong Kong has a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate, which favours the spread of mosquitoes. However, baseline information on the composition and dynamics of the occurrence of endosymbiont Wolbachia in local Ae. albopictus is lacking, hindering the development of scientifically-informed control measures. This study identifies the presence and absence of dengue and Zika viruses, an

Development and validation of a behavioral index for adaptation to lyme disease.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that climate change and other factors are leading to the emergence of Lyme disease in the province of Quebec, where it previously did not exist. As risk areas expand further north, the population can adopt specific preventive behaviors to limit chances of infection. The objectives of this study were to (1) create an index of Lyme disease prevention behaviors (LDPB), and (2) use the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to explain the decision-making process of people who choose to adopt LDPB. METHODS: A sample of 1959 adults living in a Lyme disease risk area c
