BACKGROUND: With the aging of our society comes a rising number of elderly patients with progressive degeneration of the spine associated with synovial cysts. Surgical treatment may be particularly challenging in elderly patients because of comorbidities.
METHODS: Patients treated in our department between 1999 and 2014 for spinal synovial cysts were screened. The 28 patients ≥75 years old were classified as elderly and were compared with 96 patients 50-74 years old. No patient underwent fusion as part of cyst resection.
RESULTS: Despite a significantly higher frequency of muscle reflex chan

The authors present the case of a 64-year-old woman who was referred for severe sacral pain. She reported that her pain had been longstanding, and had greatly increased after percutaneous fibrin glue placement therapy for a sacral meningeal cyst 2 months earlier at a different hospital. An MRI scan obtained immediately after fibrin glue placement at that hospital suggested that fibrin glue had migrated superiorly into the subarachnoid space from the sacral cyst to the level of L-4. On admission to the authors' institution, physical examination demonstrated no abnormal findings except for peria

Pulmonary pseudallescheriasis in an immunocompetent patient without a pre-existing cavity or cyst is a rare phenomenon. We report a case of invasive pulmonary pseudallescheriasis in a lobectomised patient treated for tuberculosis. Filamentous fungi with pyriform conidia were seen in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid . The fungus was identified as Pseudallescheria boydii on culture.

We report a case of heterotopic pancreas located in the gastric antrum. The cystic formation contained mucus. Tumoral markers in the cyst fluid were within the range pancreatic cystic mucinous tumors. Pathology examination of the resected specimen did not evidence any proliferative lesions but showed papillary hyperplasia probably due to duct occlusion.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether Echinococcus granulosus cyst fluid-infected host liver cells had differential expression of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) or differential cell cycle activity.
METHODS: Human liver cells cultured with different concentrations of hydatid cyst fluid (HCF) were tested by the MTT method to determine effects on proliferation. The cell cycle was assessed by flow cytometry. Western blotting was used to detect changes in protein expressions of p-ERK, PCNA, cyclin-A, cyclin-B1, cyclin-D1, and cyclin-E.
RESULTS: Forty-eight, 72 and 96 h of HCF at 15%, 30% a…

Introduction: Epidermoid cysts are benign lesions that may occur in many different sites of the body. They are classified into 3 types: epidermoid cysts when the lining presents only epithelium, dermoid cysts when skin adnexa are found, and teratoid cysts when mesodermal elements are present. Case Presentation: A 13-year-old boy presented with a gradually enlarging sublingual mass over a period of 4 years. The mass was painless at start but in the last 3 months, it was associated with pain and difficulties during eating and dysarthria. The general examination was unremarkable and examination o

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of 24-h interval multiple-session ethanol sclerotherapy for the treatment of simple renal cysts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study sample included 58 patients (mean age, 65.37 ± 11.95 years). We included 76 simple renal cysts that were treated with percutaneous aspiration with a minimum of two sessions of 95% ethanol sclerotherapy in a 24-h interval between sessions. Patients were evaluated at 1, 3, and 6 months after the intervention for the efficacy of the treatment. Treatment success was defined as a complete regression of a cyst or a > 50% reduction i

Anterior third ventricular lesions present with a variety of symptoms related to cerebrospinal fluid flow obstruction and mass effect. Colloid cysts are among the most common lesions in the region. They usually present with ventriculomegaly, leading to headaches, vertigo, or, rarely, decreased mental status due to the development of acute hydrocephalus. Many patients become aware of their asymptomatic colloid cysts during imaging evaluation related to other conditions. Symptomatic cysts require removal, and larger asymptomatic colloid cysts (> 1cm) in younger patients may also need to be excis

Arachnoid cysts are benign, mostly congenital lesions that are asymptomatic in most patients. In some cases, due to their location or sheer size, they produce a mass effect or hydrocephalic obstruction of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow and thus might warrant surgical treatment. The goal of the surgery is usually to reduce pressure inside the cysts, to reduce the mass effect, or to restore the CSF pathway. Surgical treatment options are resection, fenestration, or shunting of the cyst. Over the past decades, treatment under sheer endoscopic control either through a tube or via craniotomy of

Arachnoid cysts are relatively common, but rarely require intervention. While most arachnoid cysts in typical middle or posterior cranial fossa locations are seldom symptomatic, suprasellar cysts may become symptomatic due to the potential for ventricular outflow obstruction and hydrocephalus. Typical standard of care for the treatment of these lesions is endoscopic fenestration with third ventriculostomy, or the placement of ventriculoperitoneal or cystoperitoneal shunts. The surgical and anaesthetic risks of traditional interventions may be higher in the early neonatal period, including leak

Epidermoid cysts originate from ectopic embryonic epithelial cells and are a very common type of benign intracranial tumor. However, the incidence of intraventricular epidermoid cysts is low, and lateral intraventricular epidermoid cysts are even rarer. Here, we present a case of lateral intraventricular epidermoid cyst and review the relevant literature. A 54-year-old female complained of recurrent headaches over a 5-year period, with aggravated symptoms during the last 2 months or more. A computed tomography of the brain showed a low-density mass in the lateral ventricle and enlargement of t

INTRODUCTION: Cervical nabothian cysts are common in women of reproductive age. Although cysts are generally small and asymptomatic, large ones are extremely rare and may be misdiagnosed as malignancy.
CASE STUDY: We report a case of large multiple complex nabothian cyst, which was suspected as malignant one on imaging and examination. Pelvic examination and ultrasonography revealed ballooned cervix with multiple large complex nabothian follicles. There was an associated large adnexal mass with ascites. The patient was treated with total hysterectomy and omentectomy after aspiration of the fl

We identified 53 patients with non-neoplastic cysts of the pineal gland. In contrast to patients with pineal neoplasms, pineal cysts are usually asymptomatic. They infrequently obstruct the aqueduct to cause hydrocephalus or compress the tectum to produce the neuro-ophthalmologic signs of dorsal midbrain dysfunction. Obstructive hydrocephalus was present in only five patients (9.4%); three of them showed clinical signs of Parinaud's syndrome. CT and MRI typically reveal a cystic mass that averages 1.6 cm in anteroposterior (A-P) diameter with calcification at the periphery and faint rim-like c

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a group of monogenetic conditions characterised by the progressive accumulation of multiple renal cysts and hypertension. One of the earliest features of PKD is a reduction in urinary concentrating capacity that impairs extracellular fluid conservation. Urinary concentrating impairment predisposes PKD patients to periods of hypohydration when fluid loss is not adequately compensated by fluid intake. The hypohydrated state provides a blood hyperosmotic stimulus for vasopressin release to minimise further water loss. However, over-activation of renal V2 recepto

This study describes a 42-year-old male born in Tunisia, who presented with vertebral hydatidosis which was initially misdiagnosed as Pott's disease. The correct diagnosis was finally made utilizing CT and MRI imaging and confirmation of the diagnosis was made possible by molecular and immunochemical characterization of the content of vertebral cyst fluid.

A 68-year-old female developed contralateral deafness following extirpation of a left cerebellopontine angle epidermoid cyst. Computed tomography showed that large vestibular aqueduct was present. This unusual complication may have been caused by an abrupt pressure change after cerebrospinal fluid release, which was transmitted through the large vestibular aqueduct and resulted in cochlear damage.

We present two cases of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in apparently immunocompetent preterm infants presenting with unexplained respiratory distress associated with a predominantly interstitial process on the chest radiograph. Definite diagnosis was promptly established on the detection of cyst forms in the lung fluid obtained by non-bronchoscopic bronchoalveolar lavage, and a favourable outcome was achieved.

Background and Objectives: Differentiation between cystic pituitary adenoma and Rathke's cleft cyst (RCC) is clinically important because these lesions require different treatment strategies. This study aimed to develop and internally validate an MRI-based multivariable diagnostic prediction model to differentiate cystic pituitary adenoma from Rathke's cleft cyst before treatment. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on 56 adult patients (27 cystic pituitary adenomas and 29 RCCs) who underwent pituitary MRI between 2019 and 2021. MRI examinations were independently eva
