[Plasma acid reproduces oxidative and nitrosative stress in bladder tissue in vitro: experimental study].

AIM: To analyze some effects of plasma acid in vitro on the bladder tissue obtained from laboratory animals and to evaluate the possibility of its application for in vitro modeling of IC/BPS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The tissue samples of the bladder wall were obtained from female Wistar rats aged 3 months (n=16, weighing 180-200 g). The tissues were processed for 1 hour in the plasma acid prepared by spark discharge of water for injection in air. The immunohistochemical study of obtained samples was performed. RESULTS: The changes in the expression profile of bladder epithelial cells under th

Perioperative Safety of Bladder Hydrodistention in Patients on Antithrombotic Therapy.

IMPORTANCE: Bladder hydrodistention (BH) is commonly used to diagnose and treat patients with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), but the overall assessment of bleeding complications for patients taking antithrombotics is lacking. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to investigate if perioperative complications were more common in patients with IC/BPS receiving antithrombotic therapy after BH. STUDY DESIGN: We retrospectively reviewed patients with IC/BPS who underwent hydrodistention during January 2010 and May 2021. Patients with and without antithrombotic drugs were identified a

Dysmenorrhea subtypes exhibit differential quantitative sensory assessment profiles.

Women who develop bladder pain syndrome (BPS), irritable bowel syndrome, or dyspareunia frequently have an antecedent history of dysmenorrhea. Despite the high prevalence of menstrual pain, its role in chronic pelvic pain emergence remains understudied. We systematically characterized bladder, body, and vaginal mechanical sensitivity with quantitative sensory testing in women with dysmenorrhea (DYS, n = 147), healthy controls (HCs) (n = 37), and women with BPS (n = 25). Previously, we have shown that a noninvasive, bladder-filling task identified a subset of women with both dysmenorrhea and si

Grading of evidence for bladder pain syndrome: a comparative review of study quality assessment methods.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Clinical guidelines on bladder pain syndrome (BPS) report quality ratings for evidence based on study design. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system takes into account several domains in addition to limitations of study design for assigning quality ratings. We compared the quality of evidence described in current BPS literature. METHODS: All existing systematic reviews and guidelines on BPS management were reviewed, and included evidence was rated according to GRADE on a four-point scale (1-4, from very low to high). T

Illicit ketamine induced frequency of micturition in a young Malay woman.

ISSUES: The growing use of illicit ketamine among young adults poses a public health concern in Malaysia. In contrast to medical use of ketamine, illicit use has been reported to produce adverse effects on the urinary tract and, in particular the bladder. APPROACH AND KEY FINDINGS: This case report describes a young Malay woman who developed severe bladder symptoms (urinary frequency) after consuming illicit ketamine. A history of illicit ketamine use was initially missed, and she was consequently diagnosed and treated for a urinary tract infection. Her symptoms persisted despite several cours

Management strategies for painful bladder syndrome.

Painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis (PBS/IC) is a condition of chronic pelvic pain associated with irritative voiding symptoms. Management of PBS/IC has been a challenge for generations of physicians, owing to a lack of consensus on its definition, an incompletely understood pathophysiology, and numerous available therapies without high-quality evidence to guide their usage. This article reviews the most current conception of PBS/IC and data on effective treatments to recommend a management strategy.

Alterations in neuropeptide expression in lumbosacral bladder pathways following chronic cystitis.

These studies examined changes in the expression of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P (SP) in lumbosacral (L6-S1) micturition reflex pathways, following chronic cystitis induced by cyclophosphamide (CYP). In control Wistar rats, CGRP- or SP-immunoreactivity (IR) was expressed in fibers in the superficial dorsal horn in all segmental levels examined (L4-S1). Bladder afferent cells in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG; L6, S1) from control animals also exhibited CGRP- (41-55%) or SP-IR (2-3%). Following chronic, CYP-induced cystitis, CGRP- and SP-IR were dramatically increased in

Urologic Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome: A Scoping Review of Syndrome-Specific Instruments.

OBJECTIVE: To facilitate research on interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) and chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) symptom variability or flares, we reviewed the published literature to document existing data collection instruments (e.g., questionnaires and diaries), and to identify those relevant for flare research. METHODS: Seven databases were searched systematically for articles describing the development of instruments: (1) specific for IC/BPS, CP/CPPS, or both; and (2) intended for use by investigators beyond the development team. In total, 1216 abs

Emerging molecular mechanisms and genetic targets for developing novel therapeutic strategies for treating bladder diseases.

Bladder diseases affect millions of patients worldwide and compromise their quality of life with a substantial economic impact. The not fully understood aetiologies of bladder diseases limit the current diagnosis and therapeutic options to primarily symptomatic treatment. In addition, bladder targeted drug delivery is challenging due to its unique anatomical features and its natural physiological function of urine storage and frequent voiding. Therefore, current treatment options often fail to provide a highly effective, precisely targeted and long-lasting treatment. With the growing maturity
