Prevention of Blindness in Stickler Syndrome.

Stickler syndromes are inherited conditions caused by abnormalities of structural proteins in the eye, inner ear and cartilage. The risk of retinal detachment, particularly due to the development of giant retinal tears, is high. Stickler syndrome is the most common cause of childhood retinal detachment. Although retinal detachment surgery in the general population has a high success rate, outcomes from surgical repair in Stickler syndrome patients are notoriously poor, providing a strong argument for prophylactic intervention. Variable case selection, absence of molecular genetic sub-typing an

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lung: A case report and literature review.

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the lung is an unusual thoracic neoplasm with slow growing and low-grade malignancy. Usually, it is diagnosed at a higher clinical stage and is difficult to resect due to its central location. Herein, we report a 56-year-old man with hemoptysis associated with dyspnea and weight loss lasting for one month. Bronchial fibroscopy highlighted a budding nodular tumor in the left main bronchus. The patient underwent a left pneumonectomy with mediastinal lymphadenomectomy. Microscopic examination showed tumor cells infiltrating the bronchial wall and the cart

Innovative 3D Model of the Human Middle Ear in High Resolution with a Histological Microgrinding Method: A Feasibility Study and Comparison with μCT.

Conclusion. The development of a histological 3D model of the tympanic cavity visualizes the exact microanatomy of the sound conduction organ and is therefore essential for finite elements simulations and surgical training. Objectives. So far, no accurate histological 3D model of the sound conduction system existed in literature. For 3D reconstruction of the very fine structures inside and outside the auditory ossicles, a method based on histological slices allows a more differential analysis of both hard and soft tissues and could thus be superior to μCT. Method. A complete temporal bone was

Cholesteatoma and osteoradionecrosis after radiotherapy of the temporal bone: Surgical aspects.

INTRODUCTION: The treatment for head and neck cancer with radiotherapy can cause different alterations of the auditory system. We report two cases of chronic otitis of the external and middle ear secondary to osteoradionecrosis of the temporal bone. This article aims to report the experience of the surgical approach in such condition. CASES REPORT: The first patient was treated with radiotherapy in his childhood for a cerebellar tumor. He developed years later a cholesteatoma which invaded the mastoid cavities through a destruction of the external auditory canal. The second was treated for a

De novo adipogenesis in mice at the site of injection of basement membrane and basic fibroblast growth factor.

Autografting of fat pads has a long history in plastic and reconstructive surgery for augmentation of lost soft tissue. However, the results … f Matrigel and bFGF over the chest, lateral abdomen, or head. Adipogenesis could be induced even in ear cartilage or in muscle. Thus, our results demonstrated that an abundant population of adipose precursor cells is distributed widely in connective tissues of the adult body and that they migrate into the neovascularized plug of Matrigel for proliferation and m …

The effect of single-handed cricoid pressure on neck movement after applying manual in-line stabilisation.

In 30 ASA 1 and 2 patients undergoing general anaesthesia and neuromuscular paralysis, manual in-line stabilisation of the neck in a neutral position was performed and single-handed cricoid pressure was applied. Vertical displacement was measured from the midpoint of the neck (directly below the cricoid cartilage). Measurements were also made at the tragus of the ear and the shoulder; both of which acted as fixed reference points. Mean neck displacement was 4.6 mm with a range of 0-8 mm. Mean tragus and shoulder displacements were 0.5 mm and 0.9mm, respectively, with a range of 0-2 mm at each

Medial entropion following orbital decompression for dysthyroid ophthalmopathy.

We found medial entropion of the lower eyelid to be common following orbital decompression for dysthyroid opthalmopathy. In our series signi … tropion in this setting often coexists with lower eyelid retraction, and if a "spacer" of sclera or ear cartilage is to be inserted into the lower eyelid, it should be carried into the medialmost portion of the eyelid to recess the posterior lamellae, including the medial retractors, and allow the eyelid margin to return to its normal anatomic position.

Functional results after cholesteatoma surgery in an adult population using the retrograde mastoidectomy technique.

In this retrospective study, we analyzed the functional results after using the retrograde mastoidectomy technique for cholesteatoma removal in an adult patient population. The described technique was used at a tertiary referral center for cholesteatoma removal in 218 adult patients, representing 242 operated ears, with an average follow-up time of 20.3 months. With the retrograde mastoidectomy technique, the cholesteatoma is removed posteriorly through the canal wall, from the epitympanic region toward the mastoid, with the option to reconstruct the posterior bony canal wall or create an open

Wheel-shaped cartilage-perichondrium composite graft for the prevention of retraction pocket development.

CONCLUSION: Our technique can decrease the formation of retraction pockets and improve hearing function. The wheel-shaped cartilage-perichondrium composite graft (Wheel CPCG) can be considered a good material for a drum graft, and it is easy to insert a ventilation tube, in case of initial drum retraction. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to introduce the novel surgical technique of a Wheel CPCG with one-stage ossiculoplasty to prevent a retraction pocket and subsequent cholesteatoma after intact canal wall tympanomastoidectomy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 47 patients were revie

Role of SoxE transcription factors in development and disease.

Sox8, Sox9, and Sox10 arose by multiple rounds of genome duplications from a single SoxE gene in ancestral vertebrates. In this review, we will briefly discuss the molecular structure and function of SoxE transcription factors and their evolutionary origin. We will then discuss their expression, function, and developmental disorders. SoxE proteins play critical roles during the development of multiple tissues in vertebrate embryos, including the neural crest, inner ear, cartilages, and glia cells of diverse origins, heart, gonads, and gastrointestinal tract. Because they recognize the same DNA

Utilization potential of intraluminal optical coherence tomography for the Eustachian tube.

Imaging the Eustachian tube is challenging because of its complex anatomy and limited accessibility. This study fabricated a fiber-based optical coherence tomography (OCT) catheter and investigated its potential for assessing the Eustachian tube anatomy. A customized OCT system and an imaging catheter, termed the Eustachian OCT, were developed for visualizing the Eustachian tube. Three male swine cadaver heads were used to study OCT image acquisition and for subsequent histologic correlation. The imaging catheter was introduced through the nasopharyngeal opening and reached toward the middle e

Bronchoscopy-Guided Intervention Therapy With Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Support for Relapsing Polychondritis With Severe Tracheobronchomalacia: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Relapsing polychondritis is an immune disorder of unknown etiology involving multiple systems that is characterized by persistent inflammation and destruction of cartilage, including the ears, nose, costal, joint, and airways. Airway involvement caused by relapsing polychondritis is common, and tracheobronchomalacia is the most serious complication, which is life-threatening. Currently, the exact mechanism of relapsing polychondritis with tracheobronchomalacia is unknown. Although glucocorticoids and immunosuppressive agents are administered, failures often occur. Currently, bronchoscopy-guide

Pseudocyst of the auricle: an uncommon entity of the ear.

A 48-year-old white man presented with a 2-month history of a lump on his right ear following purported exposure to the cold. The patient denied any history of trauma, rubbing, insect bite, or inflammation at the site. The patient was otherwise healthy and was not taking any medications. The lesion was completely asymptomatic, as the patient denied any pain, tenderness, or change in size since the lesion appeared. Physical examination revealed a 1.1-cm x 1-cm skin-colored, slightly fluctuant, rubbery, nonmobile dermal nodule on the right scaphoid fossa (Figure 1). No erythema, warmth, tenderne

Tcof1/Treacle is required for neural crest cell formation and proliferation deficiencies that cause craniofacial abnormalities.

Neural crest cells are a migratory cell population that give rise to the majority of the cartilage, bone, connective tissue, and sensory ganglia in the head. Abnormalities in the formation, proliferation, migration, and differentiation phases of the neural crest cell life cycle can lead to craniofacial malformations, which constitute one-third of all congenital birth defects. Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) is characterized by hypoplasia of the facial bones, cleft palate, and middle and external ear defects. Although TCS results from autosomal dominant mutations of the gene TCOF1, the mechanis

The conserved and divergent roles of Prdm3 and Prdm16 in zebrafish and mouse craniofacial development.

The formation of the craniofacial skeleton is a highly dynamic process that requires proper orchestration of various cellular processes in cranial neural crest cell (cNCC) development, including cell migration, proliferation, differentiation, polarity and cell death. Alterations that occur during cNCC development result in congenital birth defects and craniofacial abnormalities such as cleft lip with or without cleft palate. While the gene regulatory networks facilitating neural crest development have been extensively studied, the epigenetic mechanisms by which these pathways are activated or
