The annual transmission potential of Wuchereria bancrofti was calculated from the number of infective larvae found in the number of Culex quinquefasciatus expected to bite an individual exposed 24 hr a day for a year in Calcutta and in a rural (Memari) area. In Calcutta, an average of 151 mosquitoes/night/person were collected; it was calculated that 55,028 mosquitoes could bite a person per year, including an average of 177 infective mosquitoes containing 319 infective larvae of W. bancrofti. At Memari, an average of 284 mosquitoes/night/person were collected; here with the resulting calculat

The islands of Batan and Rapu Rapu in southeastern Luzon, Philippines, were surveyed for filariasis from November 1984 to May 1985. Microfilariae of Bancroftian filariasis were detected in 10.5% of the people over one year of age. Microfilarial rates and intensity of infection were the same for males and females. The highest rates for both sexes were in the 56- to 60-year-old age group. Aedes poicilius, which breeds in abaca and banana plants, was found to be very anthropophilic, comprising 96.5% of the mosquitoes biting man. This mosquito bites most frequently in the middle of the night. Diss

The development of adult worm burdens and microfilaremias were determined in jirds which received 2, 3, or 4 subcutaneous inoculations of 50 Brugia pahangi infective larvae. Parasite burdens in multiply inoculated jirds were compared to those in four different groups of jirds which received single inoculations of 50 infective larvae. One of each of these singly inoculated groups was infected on the same day that one of the inoculations was given to the multiply infected jirds. Thus, the duration of the infections in the four groups of jirds receiving one inoculation was 54, 118, 189, and 254 d

Urine samples from microfilaraemic patients were concentrated and fractionated by gel chromatography on Ultrogel AcA 44. Four protein fractions labelled as UFA C1, UFA C2, UFA C3 and UFA C4 were tested for filarial antigenicity by sandwich ELISA. UFA C1 and UFA C2 showed antigenic activity. On further analysis by SDS-PAGE, UFA C1 and UFA C2 showed antigenic components with MW ranging from 10.4 K to 123 K. UFA C1-1 and UFA C2-2 showed high antigen titre in ELISA. Urinary albumin was observed as a major component in UFA C2. Absorption of albumin from UFA C2 enhanced its antigenic activity consid

BACKGROUND: Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services are essential for promoting the wellbeing of individuals and communities. Achieving universal health coverage is unattainable without ensuring equitable access to SRH services and upholding sexual and reproductive rights. Podoconiosis, a neglected tropical disease and non-filarial form of elephantiasis, is caused by prolonged barefoot exposure to irritant volcanic soils. Although SRH services have been increasingly integrated into primary healthcare systems in Ethiopia, people affected by podoconiosis continue to face substantial barrie…

Lymphatic filariasis (LF), also commonly known as elephantiasis, is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by filarial parasites. The disease is transmitted via a bite from infected mosquitoes. The bites of these infected mosquitoes deposit filarial parasites, Wuchereria or Brugia, whose predilection site is the lymphatic system. The damage to the lymph system causes swelling in the legs, arms, and genitalia. A mapping survey conducted between 2003 and 2011 determined LF as being endemic in Zambia in 96 out of 116 districts. Elimination of LF is known to be possible by stopping the spread o…

Bites Bites of mosquitoes belonging to the genera Anopheles Meigen, Aedes Meigen, Culex L. and Haemagogus L. are a general nuisance and are responsible for the transmission of important tropical diseases such as malaria, hemorrhagic dengue and yellow fevers and filariasis (elephantiasis). Plants are traditional sources of mosquito repelling essential oils (EOs), glyceridic oils and repellent and synergistic chemicals. A Chemical Abstracts search on mosquito repellent inventions containing plant-derived EOs revealed 144 active patents mostly from Asia. Chinese, Japanese and Korean language pate…

Approximately 100 million people suffer from filarial diseases including lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis), onchocerciasis (river blindness) and loiasis. These diseases are amongst the most devastating of the neglected tropical diseases in terms of social and economic impact. Moreover, many infection-induced immune mechanisms in the host, their relationship to disease-related symptoms and the development of pathology within the site of infection remain unclear. To improve on current drug therapies or vaccines, further studies are necessary to decipher the mechanisms behind filaria-driven im…

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF), also known as elephantiasis, is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) targeted for elimination through a Global Programme to Eliminate LF (GPELF). Between 2000 and 2014, the GPELF has delivered 5.6 billion treatments to over 763 million people. Updating the estimated health and economic benefits of this significant achievement is important in justifying the resources and investment needed for eliminating LF.
METHOD: We combined previously established models to estimate the number of clinical manifestations and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) averted …

BACKGROUND: In Ethiopia, Calpurnia aurea is used for the treatment of syphilis, malaria, rabies, diabetes, hypertension, diarrhoea, leishmaniasis, trachoma, elephantiasis, fungal diseases and different swellings. However, despite its traditional usage as an antidiarrhoeal and antimicrobial agent, there is limited or no information regarding its effectiveness and mode of action in diarrhoea which may be caused by Shigella flexneri, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi. Hence, we evaluated the 80% methanol (MeOH) extract of dried and powdered leaves of C. aurea for its an…

BACKGROUND: Filarial nematode parasites cause serious diseases such as elephantiasis and river blindness in humans, and heartworm infections in dogs. Third stage filarial larvae (L3) are a critical stage in the life cycle of filarial parasites, because this is the stage that is transmitted by arthropod vectors to initiate infections in mammals. Improved understanding of molecular mechanisms associated with this transition may provide important leads for development of new therapies and vaccines to prevent filarial infections. This study explores changes in gene expression associated with the t…

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) have been passively targeted through the implementation of mass drug administration (MDA), with the drugs ivermectin and albendazole, against the parasitic disease, lymphatic filariasis (LF). In Malawi, LF MDA was administered to communities between 2008 and 2014. The aim of this analysis was to estimate the impact of LF MDA and its termination on STH prevalence in school aged children (SAC).
METHODOLOGY: School survey data of STH prevalence in Malawi were obtained through the ESPEN website. The surveys spanned the periods before (1998-2004), durin

BACKGROUND: Medicine donation programs have been central to neglected tropical disease (NTD) control, particularly for soil-transmitted helminths (STH), but growing concerns about sustainability, supply continuity, and country ownership highlight the need for new access models. A novel fixed-dose combination (FDC) of ivermectin and albendazole, recently endorsed by the European Medicines Agency, offers programmatic advantages over monotherapy. Unlike some existing treatments, the FDC may not be donated. This paper examines how the current drug donation landscape for STH shapes the prospects fo

INTRODUCTION: Podoconiosis is a Skin Neglected Tropical Disease (SNTD) that affects impoverished individuals in tropical regions. While there is a substantial understanding of the stigma associated with podoconiosis, little is known about the podoconiosis-related stigma experience based on individual identities, such as gender, class, age, location and physical ability. Due to the power differentials associated with these identities, individuals experience health problems differently, resulting in health disparities. This paper aims to discuss the inequalities related to podoconiosis stigma du

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a vector-borne disease caused by parasitic roundworms, such as Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori, transmitted through mosquito vectors. Drugs such as albendazole, ivermectin, and diethylcarbamazine are used to treat LF; however, they mainly act against the microfilarial stage and have limited effect on the adult worms. So, it is time to identify or design a more efficient drug against the LF. Targeting the UDP-galactopyranose mutase (UGM) enzyme offers an effective strategy for treating lymphatic filariasis, as this enzyme is absent in mammals.

OBJECTIVES: It is estimated that more than one billion people are affected by neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Whilst there are existing treatments to reduce morbidity, a major challenge is creating robust programs that are both country-led and leverage the existing health systems. Using a systems thinking approach is a critical component for integrating NTD services, as it takes into account all aspects of what might otherwise be considered fragmented systems to create a more efficient system.
DESIGN: This article showcases three case studies where a systems lens was applied: (1) to exami

BACKGROUND: Podoconiosis is a non-infectious neglected tropical disease caused by long-term exposure to irritant volcanic soils. It results in severe physical, psychological and financial consequences. Heart and Sole Africa (HASA) is a non-governmental, community-based organization providing management to podoconiosis patients in Rwanda. We sought to analyze the impact of their program on the lives of patients.
METHODS: Quantitative surveys recorded the participants' demographics, adherence to HASA's management recommendations and changes in quality of life (QOL). Qualitative questions were u

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) and onchocerciasis (OV) are among the neglected tropical diseases (NTD) targeted for elimination in Ethiopia. We used a transmission assessment survey (TAS-1) to evaluate the serological status of OV in three co-endemic districts in Gambella simultaneously. During May and June 2019, blood samples were collected from 6- to 7-year-old children who were randomly selected through standard community-based TAS methodology. Children were tested for both circulating filarial antigen (CFA) for LF via filariasis test strip and for Onchocerca volvulus 16 (Ov16) antibody for OV v
