Effects of feed consumption rate of beef cattle offered a diet supplemented with nitrate ad libitum or restrictively on potential toxicity of nitrate.

The objective of the study was to investigate the effects of feed consumption rate on potential toxicity, rumen fermentation, and eating behavior when beef heifers were fed a diet supplemented with nitrate (NI). Twelve ruminally cannulated heifers (827 ± 65.5 kg BW) were used in a randomized complete block design. The experiment consisted of 10-d adaptation, 8-d urea-feeding, and 3-d nitrate-feeding periods. All heifers were fed a diet supplemented with urea (UR) during the adaptation and urea-feeding periods, whereas the NI diet (1.09% NO in dietary DM) was fed during the nitrate-feeding peri

Boosting pre-weaning growth and feed efficiency in suckling calves: replacing starch with dry corn gluten feed.

This study examined how varying levels of by-product substitution for human-edible (HE) feed ingredients affected nutrient consumption, growth performance, feed conversion, skeletal characteristics, and nutritional behavior in Holstein calves. Forty-four calves (3 days old; initial body weight 40.1 ± 1.5 kg) were randomly assigned to one of four dietary treatments in a completely randomized design (n = 11 per group). Diets contained 0, 150, 300, or 450 g/kg dry matter (DM) of corn gluten feed (CGF), corresponding to 0, 15, 30, and 45% of DM, respectively. Growth performance indicators, includi

New enemies: contribution of Culex perexiguus in the transmission dynamic of West Nile virus.

Vector-borne pathogens like West Nile virus (WNV), an emerging zoonotic arbovirus, are strongly influenced by mosquito community dynamics. WNV is maintained between birds and mosquitoes, with humans and other mammal species (such as equids) as dead-end hosts. In Spain, the role of Culex perexiguus as main vector of WNV is gaining significance over Cx. pipiens due to differences in feeding behavior, and vector competence, and ecological preferences that affect WNV transmission. Using a SEIR (Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Recovered) model, we examined how mosquito abundance and feeding preferen…

Effect of circadian rhythm disruption induced by time-restricted feeding and exercise on oxidative stress and immune in mice.

Frequent or long-term circadian disorders can lead to a range of health problems, including chronic insomnia, depression, chronic diseases, and cancer. It has also been shown that altering the feeding time of mice from night to day can result in circadian disorder. Recent studies have revealed complex interactions between circadian rhythm and oxidative stress. However, little is known about the impact of circadian rhythm disorders caused by time-restricted feeding on mental state, immune function, and oxidative DNA damage. In this study, we investigated the effects of circadian rhythm disrupti

Impact of habitual chewing on gut motility via microbiota transition.

The gut environment, including the microbiota and its metabolites and short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), is essential for health maintenance. It is considered that functional recovery treatment for masticatory dysphagia affects the composition of the gut microbiota, indicating that habitual mastication, depending on the hardness of the food, may affect the gut microbiota and environment. However, the impact of chronic powdered diet feeding on the colonic condition and motility remains unclear. Here, we evaluated various colonic features in mice fed with powdered diets for a long-term and a mouse

DNA barcode for the identification of the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis plant feeding preferences in a tropical urban environment.

Little is known about the feeding behavior of hematophagous insects that require plant sugar to complete their life cycles. We studied plant feeding of Lutzomyia longipalpis sand flies, known vectors of Leishmania infantum/chagasi parasites, in a Brazilian city endemic with visceral leishmaniasis. The DNA barcode technique was applied to identify plant food source of wild-caught L. longipalpis using specific primers for a locus from the chloroplast genome, ribulose diphosphate carboxylase. DNA from all trees or shrubs within a 100-meter radius from the trap were collected to build a barcode re…

Refeeding after a 24-hour fasting deepens NREM sleep in a time-dependent manner.

Sleep/wake cycle is regulated by a variety of neuropeptides in the hypothalamus, a brain region that also regulates energy homeostasis and feeding behavior. Since circadian rhythms are affected by energy metabolism and feeding condition, we investigated whether changes in feeding regimen would influence sleep/wake parameters and body temperature. We monitored sleep and body temperature across three days of baseline (day 1), fasting (day 2), and refeeding (day 3) conditions under ordinary ambient temperature and employed different refeeding schedules. Refeeding at ZT1 following the 24-h fasting…

Lack of food anticipation in Per2 mutant mice.

Predicting time of food availability is key for survival in most animals. Under restricted feeding conditions, this prediction is manifested in anticipatory bouts of locomotor activity and body temperature. This process seems to be driven by a food-entrainable oscillator independent of the main, light-entrainable clock located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus . Although the SCN clockwork involves self-sustaining transcriptional and translational feedback loops based on rhythmic expression of mRNA and proteins of clock genes , the molecular mechanisms responsible for foo

Early underfeeding seems to affect more the regulation of the feeding behavior than the intrinsic functions and growth potential of adipose tissue; it may even stimulate the development of obesity.

Invited review: Effects of group housing of dairy calves on behavior, cognition, performance, and health.

Standard practice in the dairy industry is to separate the calf and dam immediately after birth and raise calves in individual pens during the milk-feeding period. In nature and in extensive beef systems, the young calf lives in a complex social environment. Social isolation during infancy has been associated with negative effects, including abnormal behavior and developmental problems, in a range of species. Here, we review empirical work on the social development of calves and the effects of social isolation in calves and other species; this evidence indicates that calves reared in isolation

Three daily intraperitoneal injections of sub-anesthetic ketamine ameliorate activity-based anorexia vulnerability of adult female mice.

OBJECTIVE: To identify ketamine's dosing schedule that ameliorates voluntary food restriction, hyperactivity and body weight loss of adult mice undergoing activity-based anorexia (ABA), an animal model of anorexia nervosa. METHOD: Female and male C57BL6 mice underwent three cycles of ABA, starting from mid-adolescence. ABA vulnerability was compared within and across two groups of animals: those injected intraperitoneally with 30 mg/kg ketamine for three consecutive days (30mgKetx3) during the second ABA in late adolescence (ABA2) or with vehicle only (Vx3). RESULTS: Vx3 females and males ex

Escalating competition in changing seas: baleen whales exploit killer whale prey herding.

Climate change and other anthropogenic pressures are rapidly reshaping marine ecosystems, altering prey availability and predator interactions. Yet empirical evidence of how these relationships shift under changing conditions remains scarce. Drawing on over a decade of monitoring in a subarctic fjord system, we provide a rare insight into these dynamics. In northern Norway, the winter aggregation of herring (Clupea harengus) and their primary predator, the killer whale (Orcinus orca), has shifted northward under the combined influence of climate change and fishing pressure. This redistribution

Effective behaviour change techniques for physical activity and healthy eating in overweight and obese adults; systematic review and meta-regression analyses.

PURPOSE: This systematic review aims to explain the heterogeneity in results of interventions to promote physical activity and healthy eating for overweight and obese adults, by exploring the differential effects of behaviour change techniques (BCTs) and other intervention characteristics. METHODS: The inclusion criteria specified RCTs with ≥ 12 weeks' duration, from January 2007 to October 2014, for adults (mean age ≥ 40 years, mean BMI ≥ 30). Primary outcomes were measures of healthy diet or physical activity. Two reviewers rated study quality, coded the BCTs, and collected outcome results

Wintering birds avoid warm sunshine: predation and the costs of foraging in sunlight.

Wintering birds can gain significant thermal benefits by foraging in direct sunlight. However, exposure to bright sunlight might make birds easier to detect by predators and may also cause visual glare that can reduce a bird's ability to monitor the environment. Thus, birds likely experience a trade-off between the thermal benefits and predation-related costs of foraging in direct sunlight. To examine this possible thermoregulation-predation trade-off, we monitored the behavior of mixed-species flocks of wintering emberizid sparrows foraging in alternating strips of sunlight and shade. On aver

Behavioural observations of singly-housed grey short-tailed opossums (Monodelphis domestica) in standard and enriched environments.

The grey short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) has been used in biomedical research for over three decades. It is normally housed in standard rat cages and appears to have adapted well to captivity. Owing to their aggressive behaviour towards each other, adult males are normally housed singly and may spend considerable periods of time in social isolation. We wanted to carry out a preliminary study on the behaviour of singly-housed male short-tailed opossums in two different settings: a standard rat cage and an enriched floor pen. Five male opossums aged between 10 and 12 weeks were hous

Is there a role for corticosterone in expression of abnormal behaviour in restricted-fed fowls?

Growing parent stock (breeders) of meat-type chickens (broilers), subjected routinely to chronic food restriction, show increased pacing before a single daily meal and increased drinking and pecking at non-food objects (oral stereotypies) afterwards. Expression of these activities is correlated positively with the level of restriction imposed, and is thought to be controlled mainly by central dopaminergic mechanisms. There is published evidence that glucocorticoids can amplify dopamine mediated behaviours, and this paper describes four experiments examining the relationship between corticoster

Duration of hormonal deprivation: influences on physiological and behavioral responsiveness to estradiol.

A total of 54 ovariectomized female guinea pigs were divided into three groups and tested six times at 2-week intervals for their responsiveness to exogenous ovarian hormones (3 days of 4 micrograms/kg estradiol benzoate plus 1 day of 0.4 mg/kg progesterone) or control injections (0.2 ml oil vehicle). Two weeks after ovariectomy, treatment with estradiol significantly reduced food intake and body weight, and also produced vaginal membrane rupture in 98.1% of the females. When tested for sexual behavior at 4, 6, and 8 hr after the progesterone injection, 29 of the subjects (53.7%) displayed lor
