Mammary neoplasia in common brushtail possums: case report and retrospective identification of additional cases.

BACKGROUND: Mammary neoplasia in possums have been sporadically reported in the literature. CASE REPORT: An adult common brushtail possum with severe dyspnoea warranting euthanasia was submitted for postmortem examination. Necropsy revealed a firm pale tan multilobulated mammary mass which contained pale tan tissue on section. Mammary carcinoma with metastases to the lungs, pleura, intercostal muscles and reproductive tract was diagnosed microscopically. Spontaneous neoplasms in possums are rarely reported. To provide a comprehensive insight into possum neoplasia, a retrospective evaluation o

Loss of Wwox Causes Defective Development of Cerebral Cortex with Hypomyelination in a Rat Model of Lethal Dwarfism with Epilepsy.

WW domain-containing oxidoreductase (Wwox) is a putative tumor suppressor. Several germline mutations of Wwox have been associated with infant neurological disorders characterized by epilepsy, growth retardation, and early death. Less is known, however, about the pathological link between Wwox mutations and these disorders or the physiological role of Wwox in brain development. In this study, we examined age-related expression and histological localization of Wwox in forebrains as well as the effects of loss of function mutations in the Wwox gene in the immature cortex of a rat model of lethal

Stem Cells and Pregnancy Disorders: From Pathological Mechanisms to Therapeutic Horizons.

Blastocyst implantation, placental development, and fetal growth are all dependent on the interactions between the developing placenta and the decidualized endometrium. Adult stem cell populations resident in both the placenta and endometrium play key roles in directing cell fate and tissue organization throughout pregnancy. As we begin to understand how these stem cell populations contribute to successful pregnancies, we can begin to ask what roles they play in the pathogenesis of pregnancy disorders from implantation failure and miscarriage through fetal growth restriction and preeclampsia.

Abraham Lincoln's marfanoid mother: the earliest known case of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2B?

The nature and cause of President Abraham Lincoln's unusual physical features have long been debated, with the greatest attention directed at two monogenic disorders of the transforming growth factor β system: Marfan syndrome and multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2B. The present report examines newly discovered phenotypic information about Lincoln's biological mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, and concludes that (a) Lincoln's mother was skeletally marfanoid, (b) the President and his mother were highly concordant for the presence of numerous facial features found in various transforming growth fact

Hypertonia-associated protein Trak1 is a novel regulator of endosome-to-lysosome trafficking.

Hypertonia, which is characterized by stiff gait, abnormal posture, jerky movements, and tremor, is associated with a number of neurological disorders, including cerebral palsy, dystonia, Parkinson's disease, stroke, and spinal cord injury. Recently, a spontaneous mutation in the gene encoding trafficking protein, kinesin-binding 1 (Trak1), was identified as the genetic defect that causes hypertonia in mice. The subcellular localization and biological function of Trak1 remain unclear. Here we report that Trak1 interacts with hepatocyte-growth-factor-regulated tyrosine kinase substrate (Hrs), a

Correction of deformity and shortening due to post traumatic epiphyseal arrest by distraction osteogenesis.

Growth arrest in the epiphyseal plate during childhood often causes both periarticular deformities and limb length discrepancy, leading to c … is. Successful outcomes may promise the use of this method as the first choice for the treatment of growth disorders after the arrest of the epiphyseal plate in the lower limbs. However, treatment under 20 years of age may provide a better outcome with a lower incidence of complications.

[New molecular markers within the chronic myeloproliferative disorders. II: the JAK2 mutation].

The Philadelphia-negative chronic myeloproliferative disorders feature autonomous myeloid hyperproliferation and hypersensitivity to a number of growth factors, which most recently have been shown to be explained by a guanine-to-thymidine mutation in the Janus tyrosine kinase (JAK2) gene, implicating that phenylalanine is substituted with valine in position 617 (V617F mutation). JAK2 is of particular importance to haematopoiesis, since JAK2 proteins are activated mainly by the haematopoietic growth factors. The JAK2 mutation is present in most patients with polycythaemia vera and about 50% of

Levels of cerebrospinal fluid nerve-growth factor differ in infantile autism and Rett syndrome.

Autism and Rett syndrome (RS) are both developmental disorders of unknown origin. Autism is a behaviourally defined syndrome. RS, which affects girls only, is characterized by a profound learning disability following early normal development, with a consistent cluster of clinical features. Differentiation of RS from infantile autism in the very early stages of the disorders is not always easy. Both syndromes still lack discriminative laboratory markers for accurate diagnosis and differentiation. We decided to compare the CSF nerve-growth factor (NGF) levels of children with infantile autism an

Perinatal impacts of fetal growth velocity on small-for-gestational-age fetuses: A retrospective cohort study in a tertiary center.

INTRODUCTION: The perinatal risk of reduced growth velocity among small for gestational age (SGA) has been poorly studied. Therefore, we assessed the impact of abdominal fetal growth velocity on perinatal morbidity and mortality among SGA fetuses with positive umbilical artery end-diastolic flow. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective, single-center cohort study was conducted between January 1, 2018, and May 31, 2022, at a tertiary center. We included women with a singleton pregnancy, at least two ultrasounds with an estimated fetal weight in the <10th percentile at least 2 weeks apart betw

ELAV/Hu RNA-binding protein family: key regulators in neurological disorders, cancer, and other diseases.

The ELAV/Hu family represents a crucial group of RNA-binding proteins predominantly expressed in neurons, playing significant roles in mRNA transcription and translation. These proteins bind to AU-rich elements in transcripts to regulate the expression of cytokines, growth factors, and the development and maintenance of neurons. Elav-like RNA-binding proteins exhibit remarkable molecular weight conservation across different species, highlighting their evolutionary conservation. Although these proteins are widely expressed in the nervous system and other cell types, variations in the DNA sequen

Dental findings and intravenous sedation in a patient with Potocki-Lupski syndrome: A case report.

AIMS: Potocki-Lupski syndrome (PTLS), which is caused by the partial duplication of the short arm of autosome 17, is characterized by feeding difficulties associated with muscle hypotonia and dysphagia in infancy, followed by growth retardation and low body weight in later stages. Speech and motor developmental disorders are observed in childhood, accompanied by autism spectrum disorders in several cases. Other disorders include dental and skeletal abnormalities, and associated sleep apnea. Herein, we describe the first case of dental evaluation and treatment under intravenous sedation in a pa

Trophic factors as potential therapies for treatment of major mental disorders.

Notwithstanding major advances in psychotherapeutics, their efficacy and specificity remain limited. The slow onset of beneficial outcomes and numerous adverse effects of widely used medications remain of chief concern, warranting in-depth studies. The majority of frontline therapies are thought to enhance the endogenous monoaminergic drive, to initiate a cascade of molecular events leading to lasting functional and structural plasticity. They also involve alterations in trophic factor signalling, including brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), VGF (non-acronymic), vascular endothelial gro

Inflammatory markers as predictors of depression and anxiety in adolescents: Statistical model building with component-wise gradient boosting.

BACKGROUND: Immune system abnormalities have been repeatedly observed in several psychiatric disorders, including severe depression and anxiety. However, whether specific immune mediators play an early role in the etiopathogenesis of these disorders remains unknown. METHODS: In a longitudinal design, component-wise gradient boosting was used to build models of depression, assessed by the Mood-Feelings Questionnaire-Child (MFQC), and anxiety, assessed by the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED) in 254 adolescents from a large set of candidate predictors, including sex,

Congenital generalized hypertrichosis: the skin as a clue to complex malformation syndromes.

Hypertrichosis is defined as an excessive growth in body hair beyond the normal variation compared with individuals of the same age, race and sex and affecting areas not predominantly androgen-dependent. The term hirsutism is usually referred to patients, mainly women, who show excessive hair growth with male pattern distribution.Hypertrichosis is classified according to age of onset (congenital or acquired), extent of distribution (generalized or circumscribed), site involved, and to whether the disorder is isolated or associated with other anomalies. Congenital hypertrichosis is rare and may

Celiac disease and short stature in children.

Celiac disease (CD) is a genetically determined gluten-sensitive enteropathy resulting in nutrient malabsorption, with an increasing incidence worldwide. In CD children, short stature may be the only presenting clinical feature, even in the absence of gastrointestinal symptoms. Generally, a gluten-free diet (GFD) leads to rapid catch-up growth within 1-2 years. The pathogenesis of CD-associated short stature is still unclear. Besides the involvement of the growth hormone (GH)/IGF-I axis, other pathogenetic mechanisms may include autoimmune disorders of the pituitary gland and altered ghrelin s

Oriented Growth of Neural Stem Cell-Derived Neurons Regulated by Magnetic Nanochains.

Neural stem cell therapy has become a promising cure in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. Owing to the anisotropy of the nervous system, the newly derived neurons need not only the functional integrity but also the oriented growth to contact with the partner cells to establish functional connections. So the oriented growth of the newly derived neurons is a key factor in neural stem cell-based nerve regeneration. Nowadays, various biomaterials have been applied to assist in the oriented growth of neural stem cell-derived neurons. However, among these biomaterials, the magnetic mater
