Spatial overlaps in the distribution of HIV/AIDS and malaria in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: In most developing economies particularly in Africa, more people are likely to die of HIV/AIDS and malaria compared to other diseases. HIV/AIDS tends to be superimposed on the long standing malaria burden particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. The detection and understanding of spatial overlaps in disease occurrence is important for integrated and targeted disease control. Integrated disease control can enhance efficiency and cost-effectiveness through the development of drugs targeting multiple infections in the same geographic space. METHODS: Using Zimbabwe as a case study, this st

Relationship between inflammatory markers, endothelial activation markers, and carotid intima-media thickness in HIV-infected patients receiving antiretroviral therapy.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, which may be related to chronic inflammation and endothelial dysfunction despite virological control with antiretroviral therapy. The relationship between carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), a surrogate marker for cardiovascular disease, proinflammatory cytokines, and endothelial activation markers has not been fully explored in HIV-infected patients who are receiving antiretroviral therapy. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, cross-sectional, observational study of treated HIV

Activation of HIV transcription by human foamy virus in transgenic mice.

BACKGROUND: Although infection by HIV-1 is the primary cause of AIDS, cofactorial agents of an infectious nature may be involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. The present work addresses the cofactorial potential of human foamy virus (HFV) in AIDS. It has been suggested that HFV seroprevalence reaches 5% in East Africa, and HFV seroprevalence in East African patients suffering from AIDS and AIDS-related complex may be as high as 20%. Although the pathogenic potential of HFV in humans has not yet been investigated in detail, HFV transgenic mice develop an encephalopathy reminiscent of some

Impact of the IL-15 superagonist N-803 on lymphatic reservoirs of HIV.

BACKGROUNDNK cell function is impaired in people with HIV (PWH), hindering their potential to reduce the lymphoid tissue (LT) reservoir. The IL-15 superagonist N-803 has been shown to enhance NK and T cell function and thus may reduce viral reservoirs.METHODSTo determine the impact of N-803 on LTs, we conducted a clinical trial where 10 PWH on effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) were given 3 subcutaneous 6 mcg/kg doses of N-803. We obtained PBMCs and lymph node (LN) and gut biopsies at baseline and after the last N-803 dose.RESULTSWe found a nonstatistically significant approximately 0.50 m

Aging With Grace for People Living With HIV: Strategies to Overcome Leaky Gut and Cytomegalovirus Coinfection.

The intestinal epithelial layer acts as a mechanical and functional barrier between the intraluminal microbiota and the immunologically active submucosa. A progressive loss of gut barrier function (leaky gut) leads to enhanced translocation of microbial products, which in turn contributes as endotoxins to inflammaging. Th17 T cell represents the main immune sentinels in the gut epithelium, preventing aggression from commensal and pathogenic microbes. As HIV infection deeply affects gut Th17 function and increases gut permeability, microbial translocation occurs at high level in people living w

Cerebellar toxoplasmosis in HIV/AIDS infant: case report and review of the literature.

Cerebellar mass lesion is an uncommon presentation of toxoplasmosis. The authors report one rare case in an 11-month-old HIV/AIDS female infant who presented with deterioration in her developmental milestones. CT scan revealed a ring-enhancing mass lesion in the right cerebellar hemisphere with secondary obstructive hydrocephalus. A ventriculoperitoneal shunt was inserted prior to posterior fossa decompression and biopsy of the lesion. The specimens obtained were divided into two. One specimen was sent for histological diagnosis immediately after surgery while the second specimen was preserved

Familia adelante: a multi-risk prevention intervention for Latino families.

A comprehensive approach for providing behavioral health services to youth is becoming increasingly emphasized. Latino youth are at increased risk for substance abuse, mental health concerns, unsafe sexual practices and HIV, and these outcomes have been empirically connected to individual, family and community-based stress. Despite this knowledge, there is a lack of evidence-based approaches that target these negative outcomes by reducing stress in Latino families in a culturally relevant manner. The current study examined the use of research-based strategies for reducing multiple risk behavio

Effect of low-dose gamma radiation of HIV replication in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

Recent studies have demonstrated that UV light and x-irradiation enhance human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) gene expression. There are few published data on related effects of gamma-radiation. This may be of clinical relevance, as radiotherapy has been used extensively for the treatment of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome associated conditions. With this in mind, we have studied the effects of gamma-radiation on HIV replication in mononuclear cells (MC). These cells were obtained from five seronegative healthy donors, exposed to 0-200 cGy gamma-radiation, stimulated with phytohemagglutinin-P

CNS Nocardia in AIDS patients: CT and MRI with pathologic correlation.

OBJECTIVE: Since CNS nocardiosis is an often fatal yet potentially treatable infection in HIV patients, we sought to identify and characterize imaging features that may suggest the diagnosis in the appropriate clinical setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The CT scan (six), MR scans (one), or both (two) were evaluated in nine HIV patients with pathologically proven CNS Nocardia asteroides. Chest X-ray films were available in seven patients. Findings were correlated with pathologic examination. RESULTS: All nine patients had brain abscesses, and in seven that received intravenous contrast agent, a

Brief communication: virological response and drug resistance patterns among men who have sex with men in Yaoundé-Cameroon.

Men having sex with men (MSM) in Cameroon are disproportionately affected by HIV. We evaluated virological response and HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) at a community-based organization between 2022 and 2023. Enhanced adherence counselling (EAC) sessions were conducted for all and cases with unsuppressed viral load (VL > 1000 copies/ml) underwent genotyping. From 502 treatment-experienced MSM enrolled, 95 (18.9%) had unsuppressed VL with 82 (86.3%) accepting to participate (ART-duration: 3 [2-5] years; 95.1% (78/82) under Tenofovir + Lamivudine + Dolutegravir). EAC led to 97.6% (80/82) suppression

Development of a Video-Delivered Serial Drama Designed to Reduce Community Homophobia and HIV Stigma, Decrease Sexual Risk Behavior, and Increase HIV Testing Among Black Youth.

This article describes the development of a video serial drama intervention that was designed to address factors that influence HIV in the United States among Black youth. These include HIV testing, sexual behaviors not protected by condoms, negative attitudes towards sexual minorities, and HIV stigma. Behavior-change principles (social learning theory and education-entertainment) and input from members of the priority audience formed the basis of this 27-episode (3 minutes each) drama for dissemination on multiple platforms, including in public spaces or privately online. The developmental pr

Expanding the domain of drug delivery for HIV prevention: exploration of the transdermal route.

Constant efforts for HIV prevention using antiretroviral drugs, pre- and postexposure prophylactic agents, and microbicides are being made by researchers. Drug-delivery systems such as oral tablets and coitally dependent vaginal gels are short acting, require daily application, and are associated with user adherence issues, whereas the coitally independent systems such as injectables and biodegradable implants are long acting, lasting several months, during which time the termination of prophylaxis is impractical in case of adverse effects. An effective drug-delivery system to be used for an i

Progressive telomere shortening of Epstein-Barr virus-specific memory T cells during HIV infection: contributor to exhaustion?

Individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have low numbers of functional Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-specific CD8+ T cells in the face of a high EBV load, suggesting that these cells have become exhausted. We investigated whether the observed chronic EBV loads during HIV infection could cause exhaustion of EBV-specific T cells by using flow-FISH (flow cytometry in combination with fluorescence in situ hybridization) to analyze the telomere length of EBV-specific CD8+ T cells. Enhanced telomere shortening of EBV-specific T cells was observed during HIV infection, compared with t

Human immunodeficiency virus-hepatitis C coinfection: swapping new problems for newer ones.

Recent successes in HIV therapy have uncovered other health problems for HIV-infected individuals. Hepatitis C has become an especially significant problem, partly due to its faster progression in an immunocompromised setting. In addition, the higher viral loads in coinfected patients likely result in more efficient perinatal and perhaps even sexual transmission. Therapy has largely been neglected, despite data suggesting its efficacy in HIV-HCV coinfected patients. Studies of combination interferon and ribavirin studies are lacking, although underway. A major concern is the potential inactiva

Exploring barriers to PMTCT: perceptions of HIV-positive pregnant women in western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Kenya is among the six high-burden HIV/AIDS countries in Africa, with approximately 1.3 million people living with HIV as of 2024. This includes an estimated 62,000 children aged 0-14 years. Mother‒child transmission (MTCT) of HIV during pregnancy, labour, delivery, or breastfeeding significantly contributes to new infections among children. In the absence of prevention interventions, MTCT rates range from 15 to 45% but can be reduced to less than 5% with antiretroviral therapy. Women in Kenya have a higher HIV prevalence rate than men do, with 5.2% for women and 4.5% for men. Geog

Identifying Potential Factors Associated with High HIV viral load in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa using Multiple Correspondence Analysis and Random Forest Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sustainable Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) virological suppression is crucial to achieving the Joint United Nations Programme of HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) 95-95-95 treatment targets to reduce the risk of onward HIV transmission. Exploratory data analysis is an integral part of statistical analysis which aids variable selection from complex survey data for further confirmatory analysis. METHODS: In this study, we divulge participants' epidemiological and biological factors with high HIV RNA viral load (HHVL) from an HIV Incidence Provincial Surveillance System (HIPSS) sequential cross-

Determinants of overall knowledge of and attitudes towards HIV/AIDS transmission among ever-married women in Pakistan: evidence from the Demographic and Health Survey 2012-13.

BACKGROUND: HIV/AIDS has emerged as a serious public health issue across the globe, and particularly in developing countries. Comprehensive knowledge and positive attitudes are cornerstones for the prevention, control and treatment of HIV/AIDS. However, there are various misconceptions associated with HIV/AIDS transmission, which lead to negative attitudes towards people living with AIDS. The present study aims to explore the effects of these determinants, related to socio-demographic characteristics and autonomy, on women's overall knowledge and attitudes regarding HIV/AIDS in Pakistan.
