Commercially marketed supplements for bodybuilding athletes.

We conducted a survey of 624 commercially available supplements targeted towards bodybuilding athletes. Over 800 performance claims were made for these supplements. Supplements include amino acids, boron, carnitine, choline, chromium, dibencozide, ferulic acid, gamma oryzanol, medium chain triglycerides, weight gain powders, Smilax compounds and yohimbine. Many performance claims advertised were not supported by published research studies. In some instances, we found no research to validate the claims; in other cases, research findings were extrapolated to inappropriate applications. For examp

Response of the ligamentous lumbar spine to cyclic bending loads.

The effect of a "pure" cyclic flexion bending moment on the three-dimensional load-displacement behavior of fresh ligamentous lumbar spine w … nt, based on the literature dealing with loads experienced by the spine during activities involving lifting, was set at 3.0 Nm. An increase in motion of the order of 10% in the extension loading mode was observed. The increase in motion in other loading modes was not significant. In the extension loading mode, the increase in the anteroposterior displacem …

Occupational deaths and injuries by the types of street cleaning process.

This study aims to obtain an overall picture of occupational injuries by the types of street cleaning process. Three hundred and fifty-four injured persons were analyzed in terms of the company size and details of the injured persons and accidents. Results show that 'roadway cleaning' was the most common type of cleaning process for injuries, followed by 'sidewalk cleaning,' 'going/returning to work by bike' and 'lifting/carrying.' The findings also show that most accidents which occur when 'going/returning to work by bike' are in the form of traffic accidents, while in other processes they ha…

Shall we wait until the head of the femur is completely crushed in idiopathic necrosis of the femoral head?

Although it is of polyetiological nature but of identical pathomechanism, the necrosis of the femoral head has been known for more than a century, and, without treatment, it results in complete necrosis. To stop the progression of the process, load-lifting drilling of the affected area was introduced in the 1970s. Since then, the success of the technique in the early stage of the disease has been justified by countless follow-up examinations and studies. Load-lifting drilling of the affected area in the early stage of the disease yielded similar results at our department in a small clinical sa…

Gluteoplasty With Lumbar Gluteal Flap Associated With Liposuction and Fat Grafting: A Safe Technique for Massive Weight Loss Patients.

BACKGROUND: Weight loss leads to excessive flaccidity, volume loss, and tissue descent in the gluteal region. Translated autologous flaps during lower body lifting have been utilized in patients; they address sagging tissue and the lack of volume. However, sometimes use of these autologous flaps does not provide adequate gluteal projection, and a second procedure with fat injection may be required. OBJECTIVES: The authors describe their technique of a lower body lift with a lumbosacral flap in association with liposuction and lipofilling for gluteoplasty. METHODS: A prospective series of 23 …

Ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract in low transsphincteric fistulae: a new technique to avoid fistulotomy.

AIM: To date fistulotomy is still the treatment of choice for patients with a transsphincteric fistula passing through the lower third of the external anal sphincter, because it is a simple, effective and safe procedure with a minimal risk of incontinence. However, data suggest that the risk of impaired continence following division of the lower third of the external anal sphincter is not insignificant, especially in female patients with an anterior fistula and patients with diminished anal sphincter function. It has been shown that ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract (LIFT) is a pr

Information about the weight of grasped objects from vision and internal models interacts within the primary motor cortex.

When grasping and lifting different objects, visual cues and previously acquired knowledge enable us to prepare the upcoming grasp by scaling the fingertip forces according to the actual weight of the object. However, when no visual information is available, the weight of the object has to be predicted based on information learned from previous grasps. Here, we investigated how changes in corticospinal excitability (CSE) and grip force scaling depend on the presence of visual cues and the weight of previously lifted objects. CSE was assessed by delivering transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS…

The impact of left hemisphere stroke on force control with familiar and novel objects: neuroanatomic substrates and relationship to apraxia.

Fingertip force scaling for lifting objects frequently occurs in anticipation of finger contact. An ongoing question concerns the types of memories that are used to inform predictive control. Object-specific information such as weight may be stored and retrieved when previously encountered objects are lifted again. Alternatively, visual size and shape cues may provide estimates of object density each time objects are encountered. We reasoned that differences in performance with familiar versus novel objects would provide support for the former possibility. Anticipatory force production with bo…

[Unusual suicide by mechanical neck compression].

A 36-year-old man was found dead with his neck being jammed between the hydraulic tail lift and the side wall of a truck. Based on the investigations, the technical facilities of the tail lift, the results of the postmortem examination and the autopsy it could be demonstrated that the victim, who suffered drom depression, had intentionally brought himself into this position and committed suicide by compression of the neck. The pathomorphological findings and the technical reconstruction of this unusual death are presented.

Use of plasma rich in growth factor for schneiderian membrane management during maxillary sinus augmentation procedure.

The aim of this pilot study was to present a novel technique for the management of the Schneiderian membrane during maxillary sinus lift surgery using plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF). Eight maxillary sinuses were augmented in 8 patients. Two small perforations of the Schneiderian membrane occurred during the lifting procedure, which were solved using the PRGF clot before grafting the site with PRGF and anorganic bovine bone. With the exception of 1 patient who experienced pain following an acute sinus infection after 3 days of uneventful healing, the patients' postoperative quality of lif…

Timing of return of subscapularis function in open capsular shift patients.

Loss of subscapularis function can be a significant complication after any surgery that involves its tenotomy. Recently, this complication has received more recognition after anterior approaches for shoulder replacement. It is unclear, however, whether this occurs in younger patients, and if so, how long it persists postoperatively. This study investigated the time it takes for subscapularis function to return after open tenotomy in young patients with instability. Sixteen consecutive patients underwent an anterior stabilization procedure for glenohumeral instability in which the subscapularis

Long-term healing after complex anal fistula repair in patients with Crohn's disease.

BACKGROUND: Complex anal fistula in Crohn's disease (CD) poses a challenging problem. We sought to evaluate long-term surgical healing of complex anal fistula in CD through the two robust repair options-ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract (LIFT) and advancement flap (AF). METHODS: A single-center retrospective study was conducted evaluating long-term healing rates in patients with CD with complex anal fistula undergoing LIFT or AF in 2008-2018. Fistula healing was defined as closure of external wounds, cessation of drainage and absence of pain. Short-term and long-term healing rate

[Sports-related carotid artery dissection].

Sports-related carotid artery dissection are very rare and were described in different kinds of sports. We report on a 45-year old man who suffered bilateral brain infarctions caused by bilateral extracranial internal carotid artery dissection after excessive weight lifting in a gym. As possible trigger factors for the dissections we assumed the abrupt extension of the neck during weight lifting and the frequent Valsalva manoeuvers with massive rise in the pressure in the carotid artery system. The patient underwent angioplasty and stenting of the stenosis of right carotid artery, the primaril…

Peripheral NMDA and non-NMDA glutamate receptors contribute to nociceptive behaviors in the rat formalin test.

The present study demonstrates that local cutaneous administration of either the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptor antagonist MK-801 or the non-NMDA glutamate receptor antagonist 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione (CNQX) significantly attenuates formalin-induced nociceptive behaviors. Specifically, pretreatment with either drug reduced the magnitude and time course of lifting and licking behavior in the late phase of formalin pain; however, flinching behavior was not affected. In contrast, post-treatment of formalin pain with either antagonist did not affect lifting and licking …
