BACKGROUND: Magnesium represents the fourth most abundant cation in the body and plays an integral role in intracellular metabolism. Although magnesium deficiency states have been associated with a variety of medical conditions, the prevalence of hypomagnesemia has not been well studied, particularly in ambulatory settings.
METHODS: We performed a period prevalence study using 120 patients seen for routine medical care at an urban family medicine center. Chart reviews were completed for these subjects. We used univariate and multivariate analyses to correlate magnesium levels with demographic…

A study of 64 infants from one to six months of age was made using the 32-hour parenteral magnesium load test. Most of the infants were studied for neuromuscular hyperirritability or other signs compatible with magnesium deficiency; some with unrelated problems served as controls. Magnesium retention below 40 per cent was found in 26 infants who presented with minor sign or signs that were otherwise explained, as by infection. Twelve who retained 72 per cent of the load were normal or small at birth, amply fed on demand, and grew at accelerated rates, increasing from the 50th to the 88th mean …

Results of examination of 257 patients suffering from diabetes mellitus demonstrated a reduction of sodium, potassium and magnesium content in their plasma. Erythrocytes also displayed a reduction of potassium and magnesium, and some increase of sodium content. Reduction of electrolyte level in the plasma and erythrocytes was more pronounced in winter; the erythrocyte sodium content was less in summer than in winter. The 24-hour sodium potassium and magnesium excretion is increased, during winter in particular. The efficacy of treatment of diabetic patients with panangin and potassium chloride

Magnesium deficiency, which is known to be highly prevalent among patients with diabetes, has been associated with insulin resistance and poor glucose control. Here, we aimed to investigate the effects of intraoperative magnesium administration on postoperative glucose control in patients with diabetes. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with type 2 diabetes who had undergone total joint arthroplasty at a tertiary hospital, where intraoperative magnesium sulfate injections were frequently performed for postoperative analgesia. The patients were grouped based on whether…

Abnormalities of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus are common in hospitalized patients. Infrequently patients might present in the outpatient settings with non-specific symptoms that might be due to abnormalities of divalent cation (magnesium, calcium) or phosphorous metabolism. Several inherited disorders have been identified that result in renal or intestinal wasting of these elements. Physicians need to have a thorough understanding of the mechanism of calcium, magnesium and phosphorous metabolism and diagnoses disorders due to excess or deficiency of these elements. Prompt identification a

We report a patient with Crohn's disease who suffered several generalized convulsions. He was studied with cerebral image techniques and neurophysiologic tests without getting the aetiology of the convulsions. A severe depletion in magnesium levels was suspected at the time of the initial evaluation by the Nutritional Team Group. Low serum magnesium levels were confirmed in the first blood test. Convulsions disappeared when magnesium was normalised by intravenous infusion. It is necessary for specialist physicians to be on the alert of severe complications of nutrients deficiency and that this

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the concentration of calcium, magnesium, zinc and copper in serum, urine and hair in women with os … ir were similar in both groups (Tab. 3). The study found out that women with osteoporosis displayed magnesium deficiency. The results showed that highly significant correlation existed between magnesium and calcium. No significant relationship between BMD and the concentration of bioelements was observed.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic disease characterized by an inability to limit alcohol use despite knowledge of the negative health and social impacts. An umbrella entity, AUD encompasses the terms alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence, alcohol addiction, and alcoholism. In patients with AUD, who often have multiple electrolyte abnormalities, hypomagnesemia or magnesium deficiency can lead to prolonged hypokalemia or hypocalcemia, because magnesium is a coenzyme required for renal K excretion or 1,25-(OH)₂D₃ conversion. We experienced a 61-year-old patient with AUD with severe hypomagnesem…

This article highlights the essential physiological roles of magnesium, a predominantly intracellular cation and critical cofactor in numerous enzymatic reactions that support metabolism, electrolyte balance, neuromuscular transmission, and muscle contraction. The majority of magnesium is stored in bone, with smaller amounts in muscle. Because 99% resides intracellularly, serum concentrations are a poor reflection of total body stores. Magnesium homeostasis is maintained through intestinal absorption, skeletal storage, and renal regulation. Hypomagnesemia can lead to refractory hypokalemia, hy

Hypomagnesaemia may cause neurological symptoms as part of its presentation. This case demonstrates one such unusual example of a reversible cerebellar syndrome resulting from magnesium deficiency. An 81-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with a history of chronic tremor and other cerebellar signs. Severe hypomagnesaemia was detected within her initial biochemistry results. Correction of this deficiency led to a resolution in her symptoms.

A 52-year-old woman who had been treated with lithium carbonate for 10 years developed a downbeat nystagmus. The literature describes downbeat nystagmus as a rare side-effect of lithium carbonate. In this patient other causes of downbeat nystagmus were ruled out. In most cases stopping lithium carbonate does not alleviate the symptoms, which are often debilitating. At the moment there is no adequate treatment for the condition. In some cases, however, the symptoms subside after the patient stops taking lithium. Therefore, we consider that early recognition of downbeat nystagmus in patients bei

Magnesium (Mg) is the second most abundant intracellular cation in human and is involved in numerous biological processes. The kidney and intestinal tract are the principal organs involved in Mg homeostasis. Although calcium (Ca) is considered to be the major regulator of PTH secretion, a number of studies have demonstrated that Mg can modulate PTH secretion in a manner similar to Ca. Especially, it has been suggested that intracellular Mg depletion impairs the ability of the parathyroid to secrete PTH resulting in a fall in the serum PTH levels, and subsequently a fall in the serum Ca concent

Hypomagnesemia is seen in 11% of the normal hospital population and in up to 65% of severely ill patients, and can have many causes. The clinical picture may comprise the signs of Chvostek and Trousseau, paraesthesias, tremor and convulsions, although asymptomatic hypomagnesemia is seen most often. Hypomagnesemia can be treated by parenteral or oral administration of magnesium, guided by the serum magnesium level. Parenteral magnesium suppletion is indicated if the concentration is below 0.5 mmol/l or in the presence of symptoms of hypomagnesemia. In patients with magnesium concentrations betw

The main mechanisms of the chronopathological forms of magnesium depletion associate a low Mg intake with various dysregulating biorhythms. The differentiation between forms with hyperfunction and forms with hypofunction of the biological clock is seminal and the main marker is the production of melatonin (MT). The clinical forms of the various patterns of the chronopathological forms of Mg depletion may be central or peripheral. The clinical forms with hyperfunction of the biological clock (marker: increase in MT) may associate diverse expressions of nervous hypoexcitability: depression (i.e.
