Six new cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), primarily located in the oral cavity, in patients infected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), are presented. They all had a voluminous fungous tumoral mass, that extended from the gingiva to the buccal vestibule or palate. All were intravenous drug abusers. The diagnosis of AIDS was known in one patient, 2 patients presented with AIDS-related complex symptomatology, and in 3 cases NHL was the first manifestation of the HIV infection. All presented advanced stages (IV). Histologically, all were considered high grade NHL. It is recommended t

Out of a total of 48 patients with malignant lymphomas of the maxillofacial area, only 2 patients had been referred with a correct tentative diagnosis within a period of 11 years. In 83% the main symptom was painless swelling of the affected structures. Almost 50% of the extranodal manifestations were found in the mouth.

Four patients with advanced and inaccessible soft tissue sarcomas were treated with a regimen of intra-arterial chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy and/or surgical excision. Two of the patients had advanced sarcomas in the buttock and thigh regions which would otherwise have required hindquarter amputation in one case or disarticulation of the hip in the other case. These sarcomas responded significantly to intra-arterial chemotherapy to the extent that subsequent local surgery was effective in eradicating the residual tumours. No viable tumour cells were found in the resected specimens. In

PURPOSE: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), which are multipotent stromal cells, are considered to be a promising resource in tissue engineering and tissue regeneration. MSCs have been used to generate new maxillary bone with clinically successful results. The aim of this study was to determine the role of MSC in bone regeneration procedures in patients with benign maxillary lesions.
METHODS: A study was conducted on five patients treated for maxillary bone defects resulting from biopsy of benign lesions at the University Hospital of Magna Græcia, Catanzaro, Italy from January 2015 to October 2016

BACKGROUND: The utilization of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) in patients with trismus is limited because of poor surgical exposure.
METHODS: This report is about a 46-year-old man with a recurrent right base of tongue cancer who had severe postradiation trismus. We performed a midline mandibular osteotomy without a lip split and this resulted in a markedly improved surgical exposure. He underwent a TORS resection of the right base of the tongue with no significant complications.
RESULTS: The midline mandibular osteotomy significantly improved the surgical exposure and facilitated exposure

Gardner's syndrome is a variant of Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP), a condition that manifests as hundreds of colorectal polyps likely to undergo malignant change by the fourth decade. Early diagnosis of this condition has the potential to be life saving for individuals and due to its inherited nature other family members can often also be affected. Additional features of Gardner's Syndrome include multiple jaw osteomas with missing teeth that can make prosthodontic treatment a challenge. This case report highlights the presenting features and the prosthodontic problems faced when treatin

Antiresorptive agent-related osteonecrosis of the jaw results in appreciable morbidity in affected patients. Nowadays many physicians prescribe an antiangiogenic agent for the management of malignant metastases. Everolimus is a serine-threonine kinase that acts as an inhibitor of mammalian target of rapamycin, which results in reduced growth of cells, angiogenesis, and survival of cells. We report the first case to our knowledge of osteonecrosis of the jaw that seemed to result from the additive effect of everolimus.

There is emerging evidence that oral mucositis/stomatitis is a common adverse effect of sunitininb antiangiogenic therapy in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). In addition, a case of sunitinib-related jaw osteonecrosis was recently described. We report on 2 patients with mRCC treated with sunitinib. The first patient, a 19-year-old woman, treated with cisplatin and sunitinib, presented with oral pain, malodor, spontaneous and continuous gingival bleeding, and painful necrotic ulcerations clinically resembling necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (NUG). Suntinib-related stomatit

The adamantinoma is characterized by a high rate of local recurrence. Because of this peculiarity, radical treatment is generally preferred than conservative surgery. Resection with free margins is associated with lower risk of recurrence but is not recurrence free; thus, the importance of long and scrupulous follow-up is evident. The aim of this study was to present a patient with recurrent mandibular adamantinoma after box resection with safety margins of 1 cm that has necessitated of a segmental resection with 1-step reconstruction with revascularized fibula free flap.

We describe the rare entity of an intraosseous meningioma arising in the mandible. The meningioma was found incidentally in an asymptomatic adult patient on dental radiography, mimicking other cystic-appearing jaw masses. The CT and MR imaging features of mandibular meningioma are reviewed with reference to prior published descriptions of this unusual entity.

CT scans of ten patients in whom the diagnosis of mandibular osteoradionecrosis was proven pathologically or by clinical follow-up were reviewed. All ten patients had bony abnormalities (cortical interruptions and loss of spongiosa trabeculation) on the symptomatic side. These were predominantly seen in the body of the mandible (premolar and molar region, eight patients), in some of these cases extending into the retromolar triangle (two patients) or mandibular angle (two patients). In the remaining two patients the abnormalities were in the ramus and angle. The two patients treated with iridi

Odontogenic myxomas are benign but locally invasive tumours originating from primordial mesenchymal tooth forming tissues which do not metastasise. We present a series of two paediatric and two adult cases and focus on differences in diagnostic and therapeutic approaches between children and adults based on our own experience and a critical review of the literature.

Red blood cells labeled with 99mTc constitute a suitable intravascular agent for imaging of vascular abnormalities. Hemangiomas are characterized by low perfusion and a high blood pool. This "perfusion blood-pool mismatch," not encountered in other lesions, may help in the specific diagnosis of this tumor. This is particularly so in cavernous hemangiomas of the liver where three-phase 99mTc-labeled red blood cell scintigraphy should precede liver biopsy. Red cell scintigraphy also is useful for establishing the vascular nature of hemangiomas of the head and neck and the skin and for diagnosis

The distinguishing histopathologic features of focal cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) (including lesions occurring in both anterior and posterior jaws) and cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) (ossifying fibroma and cementifying fibroma) were demonstrated in our earlier work. The aim of the current study was to further refine their clinical and radiographic features. We have assessed 18 clinical and radiographic parameters by univariate comparisons (chi-squared and Student t tests), and a multivariate assessment (logistic regression) in 241 cases of FCOD and 75 of COF. These cases were diagnosed fr

A variety of the flaps used to reconstruct defects of the head and neck region following surgery for malignant disease contain hair follicles that may result in unwanted hair growth. This can cause significant distress to the patients in a variety of ways. We report 5 cases of significant intraoral hair growth of which 4 cases were successfully managed with long-pulsed alexandrite laser. One patient was not treated due to technical difficulties. We review the literature on the management of hair growth on intraoral flaps.

OBJECTIVE: Pretreatment evaluation of bone invasion in head and neck cancer is critical for treatment strategies. We investigated the usefulness of subtraction CT (SCT) in evaluating mandibular bone invasion in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).
METHODS: This retrospective investigation included patients with OSCC who underwent surgery at the Shizuoka Cancer Center Hospital between 2018 and 2022. We evaluated tumor invasion of the mandibular bone by interpreting conventional computed tomography (CT), SCT, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and comparing the findings with the pathological

Hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor (HPT-JT) was first observed by Jackson in 1958 in a family who exhibited hyperparathyroidism and recurrent pancreatitis. The author noticed the presence of jaw tumors in the affected family and reported them as fibrous dysplasia. However, it was not until 1990 that a familial variety of hyperparathyroidism with fibro-osseous jaw tumors was recognized as HPT-JT syndrome and reported as a clinically and genetically distinct syndrome. Hyperparathyroidism generally arises from glandular hyperplasia or parathyroid adenomas, with only about 1% of cases resulting from pa
