Osler and the "medico-chirurgical neurologists": Horsley, Cushing, and Penfield.

Sir Victor Horsley's lecture "On the Technique of Operations on the Central Nervous System," delivered in Toronto in 1906, set the stage for an appraisal of Sir William Osler as a protagonist for the emerging specialty of neurosurgery. During his time at McGill University from 1871 to 1884, Osler performed more than 1000 autopsies. Hispathological reports covered the topics of cerebral aneurysm, apoplectic hemorrhage, vascular infarction, subdural hematoma, meningitis, multiple sclerosis, cerebral abscess, and brain tumor. He wrote about cerebral localization and anatomy and the relationships

Monoclonal antibodies in the prehybridoma era: a brief historical perspective and personal reminiscence.

Emil von Behring, an immunologist, received the first Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1901 for his studies on serum therapy of diphtheria. Seventeen Nobel Prizes have been awarded to scientists for their work in immunology and related disciplines. E. Metchnikoff and P. Ehrlich were pioneers who became associated with cellular and humoral theories of immunity, respectively. Almroth Wright described opsonins and was a vigorous advocate of vaccine therapy for bacterial diseases. He was an influential scientist and mentor who served as the model for Bernard Shaw's play, The Doctor's Dilem

Cost-Effectiveness of Virtual Health Coaching for Caregivers of Patients With Heart Failure: Results From a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Informal caregivers play an important role in heart failure care. Health coaching can effectively help informal caregivers adopt healthy lifestyles to prevent and control diseases. However, the cost-effectiveness of interventions that support them remains unclear. We compare the cost-effectiveness of a virtual health coaching intervention (Virtual Caregiver Coach for You) designed to support caregivers in managing their stress by promoting self-care practices versus health information alone for informal caregivers of patients with heart failure. METHODS: In this randomized control

A community health-coaching referral program following discharge from treatment for chronic low back pain - a qualitative study of the patient's perspective.

BACKGROUND: Global policy and guidelines for low back pain (LBP) management promote physical activity and self-management yet adherence is poor and a decline in outcomes is common following discharge from treatment. Health coaching is effective at improving exercise adherence, self-efficacy, and social support in individuals with chronic conditions, and may be an acceptable, cost-effective way to support people in the community following discharge from treatment for LBP. AIM: This qualitative study aimed to understand which aspects of a community over-the-phone health-coaching program, were l

Health coaching to encourage obese adults to enroll in commercially-available weight management programs: The path to health study.

Physicians are recommended to screen and refer obese patients to weight management programs (WMPs). There are often limited referral options for physicians, though commercially-available WMPs could be a potential solution. The purpose of this study (Path to Health) was to evaluate the efficacy of health coaching to promote enrollment in commercially-available WMPs through a two-arm, RCT with obese patients (n = 168) randomly assigned to intervention (n = 84) or control groups (n = 84). Intervention participants received phone health coaching to help them select and enroll in WMPs. We collected

An examination of the relationship between care management with coaching for activation and patient outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: A growing body of research has established the benefits of patient activation, which is defined as the knowledge, skills, confidence, and motivation to make effective decisions and take action to maintain or improve one's health. Consequently, healthcare stakeholders of all types continue to seek ways to improve patient activation. The purpose of this study was to empirically examine whether enrollment in a health plan-sponsored care management (CM) program that included coaching for activation (CFA) was associated with utilization, medication adherence, and clinical outcomes. Effect of a nurse-led lifestyle choice and coaching intervention on systolic blood pressure among type 2 diabetic patients with a high atherosclerotic cardiovascular risk: study protocol for a cluster-randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: More than 50% of patients with type 2 diabetes have hypertension in Uganda. Diabetic patients with elevated systolic blood pressure experience higher all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events compared with normotensive diabetic individuals, hence escalating resource utilization and cost of care. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of a nurse-led lifestyle choice and coaching intervention on systolic blood pressure among type 2 diabetic patients with a high atherosclerotic cardiovascular risk. METHODS: This is a cluster-randomized study comprising two arms (interve

Plastic frontal pole cortex structure related to individual persistence for goal achievement.

Persistent goal-directed behaviours result in achievements in many fields. However, the underlying neural mechanisms of persistence and the methods that enhance the neuroplasticity underlying persistence, remain unclear. We here demonstrate that the structural properties of the frontal pole cortex (FPC) before tasks contain information that can classify Achievers and Non-achievers (goal-directed persistence) participating in three tasks that differ in time scale (hours to months) and task domains (cognitive, language, and motor learning). We also found that most Achievers exhibit experience-de

Apprenticeship-based training in neurogastroenterology and motility.

Although neurogastroenterology and motility (NGM) disorders affect 50% of patients seen in clinics, many gastroenterologists receive limited NGM training. One-month apprenticeship-based NGM training has been provided at ten centers in the USA for a decade, however, outcomes of this training are unclear. Our goal was to describe the effectiveness of this program from a trainees perspective. Areas covered: We describe the training model, learning experiences, and outcomes of one-month apprenticeship-based training in NGM at a center of excellence, using a detailed individual observer account and

Working memory training in children with neuropsychiatric disorders and mild to borderline intellectual functioning, the role of coaching; a double-blind randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Working memory training (WMT) has been shown to offer therapeutic benefits to both patients with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and patients with mild to borderline Intellectual Disabilities (MBID; 60 < IQ < 85). However, robust evidence for transfer effects and treatment benefits of WMT over placebo training are lacking. Owing to the nature of double-blind research designs in RCTs, children have received non-specific coaching not based on their actual training performance. Active coaching based on individual training results (such as in clinical practice) might en

The nature of adolescents' relationships with their "very important" nonparental adults.

As part of a larger program of research on the nature of adolescents' relationships with very important nonparental adults (hereafter referred to as "VIPs"), a community sample of 243 eleventh graders (mean age = 16.6 years) was surveyed, and a subgroup of 55 adolescents and their VIPs were interviewed about the nature and quality of their relationships. Results showed that (a) adolescent-VIP relationships were a normative component of adolescent development, not a result of problems in adolescents' lives; (b) adolescent-VIP relationships were generally of high quality (e.g., high support, low

Perceived changes in innovation and entrepreneurship competency among medical students following peer-assisted learning: an exploratory study of implementation fidelity.

BACKGROUND: Traditional medical innovation and entrepreneurship (I&E) education faces severe faculty constraints. While Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) offers a scalable alternative, its impact on complex I&E competencies and the reliability of peer-led instruction remain underexplored. This exploratory study evaluates the association of a structured PAL model with students' perceived I&E competency and its implementation fidelity. METHODS: Fifty-four medical students completed a prospective, six-workshop PAL program. Perceived I&E competency was assessed pre- and post-intervention via a validat

Communication skill training in surgical residency: insights from Y-SICO (Young-Italian Society of Surgical Oncology).

Surgical training programs primarily emphasize technical skills for diagnosis and treatment. However, communication and interpersonal skills are equally essential for residents. Trainees often face sensitive situations, such as delivering bad news and discussing end-of-life decisions and lack of communications skills could result in a negative impact on patients and malpractice claims. Despite their importance, communication skills training is often underrepresented in surgical education. This study aimed to explore the extent to which such training is offered during surgical residency in Ital
