Predicting Patient Treatment Deferrals at an Outpatient Chemotherapy Infusion Center: A Statistical Approach.

PURPOSE: Patients scheduled for outpatient infusion sometimes may be deferred for treatment after arriving for their appointment. This can be the result of a secondary illness, not meeting required bloodwork counts, or other medical complications. The ability to generate high-quality predictions of patient deferrals can be highly valuable in managing clinical operations, such as scheduling patients, determining which drugs to make before patients arrive, and establishing the proper staffing for a given day. METHODS: In collaboration with the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center,

Analysis and prediction of Ross River virus transmission in New South Wales, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Ross River virus (RRV) disease is the most widespread mosquito-borne disease in Australia. The disease is maintained in enzootic cycles between mosquitoes and reservoir hosts. During outbreaks and in endemic regions, RRV transmission can be sustained between vectors and reservoir hosts in zoonotic cycles with spillover to humans. Symptoms include arthritis, rash, fever and fatigue and can persist for several months. The prevalence and associated morbidity make this disease a medically and economically important mosquito-borne disease in Australia. METHODS: Climate, environment, an

A monotone single-index modal regression powered by deep neural networks for non-Gaussian periodontal data.

Pocket depth (PD) is a widely used biomarker for diagnosing risk of periodontal disease (PrD). However, PD typically exhibits skewness and heavy-tailedness, and its relationship with clinical risk factors is often nonlinear. Motivated by PrD studies, this paper develops a robust single-index modal regression framework for analyzing skewed and heavy-tailed data. Our method has the following novel features: (i) a flexible 2-piece scale Student-$ \boldsymbol{t} $ error distribution that generalizes both normal and 2-piece scale normal distributions; (ii) a neural network with guaranteed monotonic

Regression analysis of interval-censored competing risks data with missing causes of failure: A direct likelihood approach.

Regression analysis of interval-censored competing risks data is often required and plays an important role in many areas. For the situation, in addition to competing risk and interval censoring, another feature that makes the analysis difficult is that the failure cause may be unknown or missing. Most existing methods for addressing these challenges rely on two-stage estimation procedures, which could suffer efficiency loss and high computational cost. To overcome these, we propose a direct likelihood approach based on a mixture model framework. The proposed method accounts for both competing

A full Bayesian random parameters Negative Binomial-Lindley model for fatal pedestrian crash frequency on rural highways.

Pedestrian safety on rural highways remains a pressing concern in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), where highways frequently pass through settlements with substantial pedestrian activity but limited dedicated pedestrian infrastructures and prevalence of high-speed motorized traffic. This study investigates fatal pedestrian crash frequency on such roads using a fine-resolution segment-level approach. Five-year fatal pedestrian crash data (2017-2022, excluding 2020), comprising 337 pedestrian-involved crashes across six rural highway corridors, were analyzed by dividing the entire road n

Self-Adapting Priors for Dynamic Borrowing in Three-Arm Non-Inferiority Trials With Pre-Specified Margin.

Non-inferiority trials play a central role in clinical research by demonstrating that an experimental treatment is not unacceptably worse than an established reference treatment when superiority is unlikely, but the new treatment offers other advantages, such as reduced toxicity, easier administration, lower cost, or improved adherence. These trials are typically designed as active control studies, making historical data from previous clinical trials or real-world evidence readily available. A key challenge, however, is how to appropriately incorporate multiple heterogeneous historical dataset

Comparing the Statistics of High-Resolution Time-of-Flight-Based Shear Wave Speed Estimation in the Presence of Speckle Bias Using Shear Wave Slowness or Velocity.

Ultrasound shear wave elasticity imaging (SWEI) quantifies the mechanical properties of soft tissue by relating measurements of shear wave speed (SWS) to a material model. Many SWEI algorithms estimate the time of flight (TOF) over some fixed distance along a given trajectory and calculate the wave velocity as the ratio of that distance to the TOF. To balance spatial resolution and SWS precision, most high-resolution 2D-SWEI algorithms average together multiple noisy velocity estimates to generate the final SWS. However, velocity calculated over a fixed distance with an estimated TOF can be pr

Short term forecast of new daily pandemic hospitalizations: A time series model for a single hospital.

Reliable hospital admission can aid contingency planning during pandemics. While some studies have developed models for predicting new hospitalizations, most focus on data at the regional or national level. During health crises, a prediction model tailored to a single hospital is essential, as models based on regional data may fail to account for the heterogeneity within the local population in terms of demographics, morbidity, and other relevant characteristics. Our study addresses this gap by presenting an approach for short-term forecasting of daily pandemic admissions to a single hospital.

Shape-constrained semiparametric maximum likelihood for backward time under an accelerated failure time model.

We investigate semiparametric maximum likelihood inference for backward (current-duration, backward-recurrence) times arising in cross-sectional (prevalent-cohort) sampling under an accelerated failure time (AFT) model for the underlying forward lifetime. A key observation is that, after a suitable transformation, the baseline density of backward times is intrinsically monotone non-increasing. Exploiting this shape constraint yields a profile likelihood estimator for the regression parameter β together with a nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator (NPMLE) of the monotone density via the Gr

Integrating AI for infectious disease prediction: A hybrid ANN-XGBoost model for leishmaniasis in Pakistan.

Addressing leishmaniasis infection remains a substantial challenge in KP-Pakistan due to the increased infection prevalence. Understanding its spreading tool offerings is a major challenge. We essentially design effective approaches to pinpoint its emergence and implement upgraded management strategies. This study aims to assess the prevalence of leishmaniasis infection in KP's four high-endemic districts (Bannu, Karark, Lakki Marwat, and Dera Ismail Khan) and estimate the potential future incidence. We executed a broad logical evaluation on data obtained from the pertinent district health dep

Integrating Complex Selection Rules Into the Latent Overlapping Group Lasso for the Construction of Coherent Prediction Models.

Prediction models are important in medical research, as such models enable health researchers to gain deeper insights into disease epidemiology and clinicians to identify patients at higher risk of adverse outcomes. One commonly employed approach to developing prediction models is variable selection through penalized regression. Integrating natural variable structures and predefined inclusion requirements into variable selection not only enhances model interpretability but can also potentially boost prediction accuracy. For example, the latent overlapping group Lasso can force the inclusion of

Investigating a Domain Adaptation Approach for Integrating Different Measurement Instruments in a Longitudinal Clinical Registry.

In a longitudinal clinical registry, different measurement instruments might have been used for assessing individuals at different time points. To combine them, we investigate deep learning techniques for obtaining a joint latent representation, to which the items of different measurement instruments are mapped. This corresponds to domain adaptation, an established concept in computer science for image data. Using the proposed approach as an example, we evaluate the potential of domain adaptation in a longitudinal cohort setting with a rather small number of time points, motivated by an applic

Model-Based Geostatistical Mapping of the Prevalence of Onchocerca volvulus in Cameroon between 1971 and 2020.

BACKGROUND: After the closure of the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC) in 2015, the Ministry of Public Health of Cameroon has continued implementing annual community-directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTI) in endemic areas. The World Health Organization has proposed that 12 countries be verified for elimination (interruption) of transmission by 2030. Using Rapid Epidemiological Mapping of Onchocerciasis, a baseline geostatistical map of nodule (onchocercoma) prevalence had been generated for APOC countries, indicating high initial endemicity in most regions of Cameroon. Identifying key weather factors influencing human salmonellosis: A conditional incidence analysis in England, Wales, and the Netherlands.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to improve the understanding of seasonal incidence pattern observed in salmonellosis by identifying the most influential weather factors, characterising the nature of this association, and assessing whether it is geographically restricted or generalisable to other locations. METHODS: A novel statistical model was employed to estimate the incidence of salmonellosis conditional to various combinations of three simultaneous weather factors from 14 available. The analysis utilised daily salmonellosis cases reported from 2000 to 2016 along with detailed spatial and tem

Bridging the gap between two-stage and joint models: The case of tumor growth inhibition and overall survival models.

Many clinical trials generate both longitudinal biomarker and time-to-event data. We might be interested in their relationship, as in the case of tumor size and overall survival in oncology drug development. Many well-established methods exist for analyzing such data either sequentially (two-stage models) or simultaneously (joint models). Two-stage modeling (2stgM) has been challenged (i) for not acknowledging that biomarkers are endogenous covariable to the survival submodel and (ii) for not propagating the uncertainty of the longitudinal biomarker submodel to the survival submodel. On the ot

Visual hazardous models: A hybrid approach to investigate road hazardous events.

Road users (drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and Animals) are exposed to hazardous events during their commute. With 23 % of global fatalities among pedestrians, their safety continues to be a principal interest for policymakers worldwide. Owing to limited budgets available, there is a growing emphasis on data-driven stochastic models to decide on policies. However, statistical models have limitations due to crash data having redundant features, inherent heterogeneity, and unobserved characteristics. The random parameter model framework addresses the unobserved heterogeneity, but redundant fe

Challenges and motivating factors for integrating geostatistical models in targeted schistosomiasis control: A qualitative case study in Northwestern Tanzania.

INTRODUCTION: To address problems of over- and under-treatment with preventive chemotherapy resulting in ongoing transmission of schistosomiasis, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends targeted mass drug administration (MDA) interventions at a sub-district level. In Tanzania, the lack of sub-district (ward) prevalence data has inhibited a transition to targeted treatment. Model-based prevalence estimation combined with routine surveillance data can be used to overcome this gap. We created a geostatistical model to estimate parasitological prevalence in the wards of the Lake Zone region

Development of prediction models to identify hotspots of schistosomiasis in endemic regions to guide mass drug administration.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease affecting over 150 million people. Hotspots of Schistosoma transmission-communities where infection prevalence does not decline adequately with mass drug administration-present a key challenge in eliminating schistosomiasis. Current approaches to identify hotspots require evaluation 2-5 y after a baseline survey and subsequent mass drug administration. Here, we develop statistical models to predict hotspots at baseline prior to treatment comparing three common hotspot definitions, using epidemiologic, survey-based, and remote sensing data. In a r
