The neural mechanisms of aligning spatial perspectives.

Visual perspective-taking requires mentally adopting another spatial viewpoint by aligning one's own perspective with that of a reference, such as another person or object. This alignment process is thought to rely on embodied spatial transformations engaging both spatial computation and motor-related systems. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we tested whether neural responses scale with angular disparity between observer and reference viewpoints. Participants judged the relative position of objects from the perspective of either an avatar or an empty chair across alignment

Decoding of auditory cortex signals with a LAMSTAR neural network.

OBJECTIVES: Each neuron has a specific set of stimuli, which it preferentially responds to (the receptive field of the neuron). For implantable cortical prosthetic devices specific points of the cortex (or groups of neurons) have to be stimulated to create perceptions of sensory stimulus with specific attributes (such as frequency, temporal characteristics, etc). Such applications would need real time decoding of signals. Previously mathematical techniques, such as computing the receptive field (using electrophysiology data) and artificial neural networks (Kohonen network or SOM and back propa

Building bridges between public health and computer science departments in academia to foster artificial intelligence knowledge and skills for the digital age.

The current communication gap between Public Health (PH) and Computer Science (CS) academics is striking: public health professionals speak in terms of incidence rates, risk factors, interventions, health systems, health policy, and equity, while computer scientists converse in neural networks, optimization functions, scalability, and computational complexity. This linguistic and cultural divide often prevents natural collaboration, leaving valuable opportunities unexplored. In this Artificial Intelligence (AI) era, regardless of whether they are in high-, middle-, or low-income countries, the

Classification of tetraplegics through automatic movement evaluation.

The general problem of classification of functional movements in humans with spinal cord injuries requires the following questions to be answered: what are the essential kinematic parameters that we have to observe during the movement? Is it possible to estimate preserved motor skills based on kinematics? Which computational method for identification is suited to geometric feature analysis? To answer these questions we have developed the methodology which has two phases: (1) recordings of a series of specified arm movements; and (2) custom made software for graphical presentation of arm moveme

CVT-HNet: a fusion model for recognizing perianal fistulizing Crohn's disease based on CNN and ViT.

BACKGROUND: Accurate identification of anal fistulas is essential, as it directly impacts the severity of subsequent perianal infections, prognostic indicators, and overall treatment outcomes. Traditional manual recognition methods are inefficient. In response, computer vision methods have been adopted to improve efficiency. Convolutional neural networks(CNNs) are the main basis for detecting anal fistulas in current computer vision techniques. However, these methods often struggle to capture long-range dependencies effectively, which results in inadequate handling of images of anal fistulas.

Recurrent connectivity supports higher-level visual and semantic object representations in the brain.

Visual object recognition has been traditionally conceptualised as a predominantly feedforward process through the ventral visual pathway. While feedforward artificial neural networks (ANNs) can achieve human-level classification on some image-labelling tasks, it's unclear whether computational models of vision alone can accurately capture the evolving spatiotemporal neural dynamics. Here, we probe these dynamics using a combination of representational similarity and connectivity analyses of fMRI and MEG data recorded during the recognition of familiar, unambiguous objects. Modelling the visua

Prediction of clinical response to excimer laser treatment in vitiligo by using neural network models.

BACKGROUND: A predictive model may help to select likely responders and to anticipate treatment duration in vitiligo. METHODS: We aimed to develop a predictive rule based on data from a randomized trial of excimer laser in vitiligo. Information on 325 treated patches was available. The degree of repigmentation was assessed by digital image analysis of UVB-reflected photographs. Since no strong relationship between any single predictive parameter and outcome was initially documented, we relied on artificial neural networks. RESULTS: Using a time-response optimal threshold model, data were div

Neural networks involved in nausea in adult humans: A systematic review.

Nausea is a common clinical symptom, poorly managed with anti-emetic drugs. To identify potential brain regions which may be therapeutic targets we systematically reviewed brain imaging in subjects reporting nausea. The systematic review followed PRISMA statements with methodological quality (MINORS) and risk of bias (ROBINS-I) assessed. Irrespective of the nauseagenic stimulus the common (but not only) cortical structures activated were the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and the anterior insula (AIns) with some evidence for lateralization (Left-IFG, Right-AI

A Somatosensory Computation That Unifies Limbs and Tools.

It is often claimed that tools are embodied by their user, but whether the brain actually repurposes its body-based computations to perform similar tasks with tools is not known. A fundamental computation for localizing touch on the body is trilateration. Here, the location of touch on a limb is computed by integrating estimates of the distance between sensory input and its boundaries (e.g., elbow and wrist of the forearm). As evidence of this computational mechanism, tactile localization on a limb is most precise near its boundaries and lowest in the middle. Here, we show that the brain repur

Dynamics on networks: the role of local dynamics and global networks on the emergence of hypersynchronous neural activity.

Graph theory has evolved into a useful tool for studying complex brain networks inferred from a variety of measures of neural activity, including fMRI, DTI, MEG and EEG. In the study of neurological disorders, recent work has discovered differences in the structure of graphs inferred from patient and control cohorts. However, most of these studies pursue a purely observational approach; identifying correlations between properties of graphs and the cohort which they describe, without consideration of the underlying mechanisms. To move beyond this necessitates the development of computational mo

Network Analysis Pipeline for Neuronal 2D and 3D Organoid Multielectrode Recordings.

Multielectrode recordings from 2D or 3D cultures are commonly used to assess neuronal activity including action potential firing and burst rates. Yet, multielectrode recordings, which carry parallel time series, can also be used to infer functional connectivity and to compare network features from neuronal networks within neuronal 2D cultures or 3D organoids. This chapter provides a protocol for using the microelectrode array network analysis pipeline (MEA-NAP). With MEA-NAP, users with limited computational experience can easily evaluate network activity in their microelectrode array (MEA) re

Neurofunctional correlates of attention rehabilitation in Parkinson's disease: an explorative study.

The effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation (CR) in Parkinson's disease (PD) is in its relative infancy, and nowadays there is insufficient information to support evidence-based clinical protocols. This study is aimed at testing a validated therapeutic strategy characterized by intensive computer-based attention-training program tailored to attention deficits. We further investigated the presence of synaptic plasticity by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Using a randomized controlled study, we enrolled eight PD patients who underwent a CR program (Experimental group) an

Motor-Induced Suppression of the N100 Event-Related Potential During Motor Imagery Control of a Speech Synthesizer Brain-Computer Interface.

Purpose Speech motor control relies on neural processes for generating sensory expectations using an efference copy mechanism to maintain accurate productions. The N100 auditory event-related potential (ERP) has been identified as a possible neural marker of the efference copy with a reduced amplitude during active listening while speaking when compared to passive listening. This study investigates N100 suppression while controlling a motor imagery speech synthesizer brain-computer interface (BCI) with instantaneous auditory feedback to determine whether similar mechanisms are used for monitor

FUSED-Net: Detecting traffic signs with limited data.

Automatic Traffic Sign Recognition is paramount in modern transportation systems. However, curating large-scale datasets for diverse traffic sign detection remains impractical. In this context, we present FUSED-Net, a novel approach that enhances Few-Shot Object Detection (FSOD) for traffic signs using limited data. FUSED-Net integrates Faster RCNN with Unfrozen Parameters, Pseudo-Support Sets, Embedding Normalization, and Domain Adaptation to improve detection accuracy. Unlike conventional methods, FUSED-Net keeps all parameters unfrozen during training, enabling it to learn effectively from

Uncovering Topics in Dutch Patient Messages in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Comparative Study of Embedding Models for Neural Topic Modeling.

This study applied natural language processing to identify common topics in 12,054 Dutch patient-provider messages in inflammatory bowel disease. Using the BERTopic framework, three embedding models were evaluated with topic diversity, Cv coherence, and topic assignment proportion. A lightweight Dutch-specific embedding model (RobBERT) outperformed two larger multilingual models (MPNet Sentence Transformer and QWEN3-embedding-8B). We identified 120 sentence-level topics covering medical and administrative themes. Results showed that 22% of messages did not require specialist attention, highlig

TransUNet-GradCAM: a hybrid transformer-U-Net with self-attention and explainable visualizations for foot ulcer segmentation.

Automated segmentation of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) supports clinical diagnosis, treatment planning, and longitudinal wound monitoring, but remains difficult owing to the heterogeneous appearance, irregular morphology, and cluttered backgrounds of ulcers in clinical photographs. Convolutional networks such as U-Net localise well but model long-range context poorly, whereas Vision Transformers capture global dependencies. We employ a hybrid ViT-bottleneck U-Net that combines a convolutional encoder-decoder with a Transformer bottleneck and attention-gated skip connections, and we emphasise th

ScaleMamba-YOLO: a multi-scale MambaYOLO for medical object detection.

The efficacy of automated lesion detection in clinical settings is often hampered by two primary factors: the vast range of pathological scales and the presence of non-target anatomical interference. Standard Mamba-based detectors, while efficient, frequently suffer from fixed receptive fields and background signal leakage. To resolve these challenges, we introduce ScaleMamba-YOLO, an enhanced medical object detection framework that integrates selective state-space modeling with adaptive local feature refinement. Our approach features two innovative structural components: first, a Medical Mult
