"Phase capture" in amblyopia: the influence function for sampled shape.

This study was concerned with what stimulus information humans with amblyopia use to judge the shape of simple objects. We used a string of four Gabor patches to define a contour. A fifth, center patch served as the test pattern. The observers' task was to judge the location of the test pattern relative to the contour. The contour was either a straight line, or an arc with positive or negative curvature. We asked whether phase shifts in the inner or outer pairs of patches distributed along the contour influence the perceived shape. That is, we measured the phase shift influence function. Our r

Evidence of a highly specific relationship between rapid automatic naming of digits and text-reading speed.

This paper explores the specificity of the relationship between rapid automatic naming and reading fluency. Reading accuracy, rate, and fluency was measured among a sample of 67 children, the majority of whom were very poor readers. Regression analyses revealed that phonological processing tasks predicted reading accuracy and comprehension whereas rapid digit (but not picture) naming predicted reading accuracy and rate. After further controlling reading accuracy, digit naming was still a significant predictor of reading rate. This suggests that rapid alphanumeric naming is a highly specific pr

The cerebellar deficit hypothesis and dyslexic tendencies in a non-clinical sample.

In order to assess the relationship between cerebellar deficits and dyslexic tendencies in a non-clinical sample, 27 primary school children aged 8-9 completed a cerebellar soft signs battery and were additionally assessed for reading age, sequential memory, picture arrangement and knowledge of common sequences. An average measure of the soft signs data established a single construct which we treated as our primary index of cerebellar function. Overall cerebellar function was significantly correlated with reading age, picture arrangement and knowledge of common sequences even when IQ was parti

New evidence for morphological errors in deep dyslexia.

Morphological errors in reading aloud (e.g., sexist-->sexy) are a central feature of the symptom-complex known as deep dyslexia, and have historically been viewed as evidence that representations at some level of the reading system are morphologically structured. However, it has been proposed (Funnell, 1987) that morphological errors in deep dyslexia are not morphological in nature but are actually a type of visual error that arises when a target word that cannot be read aloud (by virtue of its low imageability and/or frequency) is modified to form a visually similar word that can be read alou

Clock drawing in developmental dyslexia.

Although developmental dyslexia is often defined as a language-based reading impairment not attributable to low intelligence or educational or socioeconomic limitations, the behavioral manifestations of dyslexia are not restricted to the realm of language. Functional brain imaging studies have shed light on physiological differences associated with poor reading both inside and outside the classical language areas of the brain. Concurrently, clinically useful tests that elicit these nonlinguistic deficits are few. Specifically, the integrity of the dorsal visual pathway, which predominantly pro

Early widespread cortical distribution of coherent fusiform face selective activity.

Intracranial EEG was analyzed from 16 pharmaco-resistant epilepsy patients. Subjects participated in memory tasks for faces and/or words. Face-selective coherence increases were found between the fusiform gyrus and temporal, parietal, and frontal cortices at 160-230 ms poststimulus onset. Word stimuli elicited weak or negligible response at the same latency. Phase lag increased monotonically with distance from the fusiform region. The slope was consistent with conduction velocities of myelinated cortico-cortical pathways. These results suggest that the contribution of the fusiform gyrus to fac

The role of good form in young Infants' perception of partly occluded objects.

Young infants have been reported to perceive the unity of a center-occluded object when the visible ends of the object undergo common motion, but not on the basis of stationary information (e.g., P. J. Kellman & E. S. Spelke, 1983). We investigated the possibility that 4-month-old infants will attend to and utilize the global configuration (i.e., the "good form") of a partly occluded, moving object to perceive its unity and coherence behind the occluder. In the first experiment, infants viewed a partly occluded circle or cross that translated laterally. Infants who habituated in the minimum nu

Priming of pop-out: II. The role of position.

In an earlier paper (Maljkovic & Nakayama, 1994) we showed that repetition of an attention-driving feature primes the deployment of attention to the same feature on subsequent trials. Here we show that repetition of the target position also primes subsequent trials. Position priming shows a characteristic spatial pattern. Facilitation occurs when the target position is repeated on subsequent trials, and inhibition occurs when the target falls on a position previously occupied by a distractor. Facilitation and inhibition also exist, though somewhat diminished, for positions adjacent to those of

Identification of famous faces and famous names in early Alzheimer's disease. Relationship to anterograde episodic and general semantic memory.

We assessed remote memory in 33 patients with dementia of Alzheimer's type (DAT) with Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores between 17 and 30, and 30 matched controls using a Famous Faces Test and Famous Names Test designed to assess face recognition, identification and naming, and name recognition and identification, respectively, together with a range of anterograde episodic and semantic memory tests. Patients with DAT were impaired on all components of the remote memory tests, i.e. famous face recognition, identification and naming, and famous name recognition and identification. Ther

Temporal and spatial processing in reading disabled and normal children.

The ability to process temporal and spatial visual stimuli was studied to investigate the role these functions play in the reading process. Previous studies of this type have often been confounded by memory involvement, or did not take into account the evidence which suggests a visual transient deficient in some dyslexics. Normal (n = 39), reading disabled (n = 26), and backward reading children (n=12) were compared on a visual computer game, which consisted of a temporal and a analogous spatial dot counting task. Reading disabled children performed significantly worse than normal children on

Similarities in the detection of stimulus symmetry by individuals with and without mental retardation.

Intelligence-related differences in the detection of stimulus organization previously identified by Soraci, Carlin, Deckner, and Baumeister (1990) were examined further to determine whether they would (a) extend to similar checkerboard stimuli varying solely with respect to symmetry and (b) generalize to form-like polygon stimuli. Detection performances of 10 individuals with mild mental retardation, 10 CA-matched, and 10 MA-matched individuals were assessed on a rapid presentation a two-choice match-to-sample task. The organizations of the target and distractor stimuli were varied across four

Group differences and individual classification accuracy associated with letter/word oddity problems.

The ability of 27 pairs of mildly mentally retarded and normally achieving 6- through 8-year-old students to apply an oddity rule to an experimental set of letter and word oddity problems was assessed. The mildly retarded group evidenced a markedly lower level of performance on all five experimental oddity problems, but they did evidence successful generalization to oddity arrays that visually were very different from those used in training. High levels (greater than 90%) of sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive accuracy, and negative predictive accuracy were observed using only six ca

Evidence relating subjective contours and interpretations involving interposition.

Subjective contours, according to one theory, outline surfaces that are apparently interposed between the viewer and background (because of the disruption of background figures, sudden termination of lines, and other interposition 'cues') but are not explicitly outlined by intensity discontinuities. This theory predicts that if the cues are not interpreted as evidence of interposition, no intervening surface need be postulated, hence no subjective contours would be seen. This prediction, however, is difficult to test because observers normally interpret the cues as interposition evidence and n

Personality style differences in visual search performance.

The present study continues the examination of the personality styles in normal populations that have been described in the clinical literature. Earlier work has focused on behavioral, attitudinal, and cognitive components of the personality styles. The present study extends our exploration of the cognitive domain by examining the performance of different personality groups on a visual scanning task. Hysterics searched a stimulus array for letter targets at a mean rate of 0.04 +/- SD 0.177 seconds per unit of information, which was slower than the control rate of 0.0225 +/- SD 0.0078 seconds.

Evidence for dimensional independence in short-term memory of retarded individuals.

This experiment was designed to assess the relative importance of dimensional similarity between test and interpolated problems and absolute difficulty of interpolated material as variables influencing short-term retention in the discrimination learning of retarded persons. Twenty moderate-to-borderline retarded individuals were taught a mixed series of two-trial discriminations consisting of: (a) relatively easy multidimensional ("junk") problems and (b) more difficult, form-relevant dotpattern discriminations. Test problems and interpolations were either dimensionally similar (both junk or b

Visual identification of conspecifics shapes social behavior in mice.

Recognizing conspecifics-others of the same species-in order to determine how to interact with them appropriately is a fundamental goal of animal sensory systems. It has undergone selective pressure in nearly all species. Mice have a large repertoire of social behaviors that are the subject of a rapidly growing field of study in neuroscience. Mouse social interactions likely incorporate all available sensory modalities, and the vast majority of studies have not attempted to isolate them. Our understanding of the role of vision in mouse social interactions remains overlooked, given the prominen

Fixation to features and neural processing of facial expressions in a gender discrimination task.

Early face encoding, as reflected by the N170 ERP component, is sensitive to fixation to the eyes. Whether this sensitivity varies with facial expressions of emotion and can also be seen on other ERP components such as P1 and EPN, was investigated. Using eye-tracking to manipulate fixation on facial features, we found the N170 to be the only eye-sensitive component and this was true for fearful, happy and neutral faces. A different effect of fixation to features was seen for the earlier P1 that likely reflected general sensitivity to face position. An early effect of emotion (∼120 ms) for happ

Double dissociation between visual recognition and picture naming: a study of the visual language connectivity using tractography and brain stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Study of the corticosubcortical functional anatomy of reading and picture naming. OBJECTIVE: To study the role of the left basal occipitotemporal area and its white matter pathways. METHODS: Three patients underwent awake surgery for lesions in the left basal posterotemporal region with intraoperative electrostimulations. Intraoperative testing consisted of naming, reading, and recognition of symbols. Location of the stimulation sites was obtained by comparing the surgical cavity in the postoperative magnetic resonance imaging with the tags precisely located in each one of these

Do patients with glaucoma have difficulty recognizing faces?

PURPOSE: To compare face recognition performance of glaucomatous patients with age-similar visually healthy people. METHODS: Percentage of correctly identified faces in the Cambridge Face Memory Test was assessed in glaucomatous patients (n = 54; mean age = 69) with a range of visual field (VF) defects and visually healthy controls (n = 41; mean age = 67). All participants underwent cognitive and visual assessment (binocular visual acuity [BVA], contrast sensitivity [CS], and Humphrey VFs, both 10-2 and 24-2) and had BVA of at least 0.18 logMAR. Patients were classified as having "early," "mo

Object-based attention benefits reveal selective abnormalities of visual integration in autism.

A pervasive integration deficit could provide a powerful and elegant account of cognitive processing in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). However, in the case of visual Gestalt grouping, typically assessed by tasks that require participants explicitly to introspect on their own grouping perception, clear evidence for such a deficit remains elusive. To resolve this issue, we adopt an index of Gestalt grouping from the object-based attention literature that does not require participants to assess their own grouping perception. Children with ASD and mental- and chronological-age matched typically
