Moyamoya Disease Causing Stroke in the Setting of Cocaine Use and Uncontrolled Hypertension Due to Primary Hyperaldosteronism.

Moyamoya disease is a cerebrovascular disease characterized by stenosis of large intracranial arteries and the development of smaller collateral vessels. Moyamoya may cause strokes and stroke-like symptoms in young patients. It has also been linked to autoimmune diseases and neuropsychiatric conditions. We present a case of moyamoya disease in a young patient with concomitant hyperaldosteronism, uncontrolled hypertension, and cocaine use disorder, along with features of antisocial personality disorder. This is a unique presentation of an underlying neurological disease causing psychiatric feat

[Function of nonspecific brain systems in mild war cranio-cerebral trauma].

129 participants of military conflicts were examined; 72 of them had a mild combat craniocerebral trauma (CCT) (8.46 +/- 0.72 years before the observation on the average); 57 hadn't any trauma; 15 healthy individuals formed a control group. The examination included an analysis of the indices of autonomic background, cardiointervalograms, EEG, EMG, visual and acoustic evoked potentials as well as peculiarities of personality according to the modified MMPI test. The results confirmed a role of chronic combat stress in the development of the dysfunction of non-specific systems of the brain in the

Childhood trauma in obsessive-compulsive disorder, trichotillomania, and controls.

There is relatively little data on the link between childhood trauma and obsessive-compulsive/putative obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders. The revised Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), which assesses physical, emotional, and sexual abuse as well as physical and emotional neglect, was administered to female patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD; n = 74; age: 36.1 plus minus 16.3), TTM (n = 36; age: 31.8 plus minus 12.3), and a group of normal controls (n = 31; age: 21.5 plus minus 1.0). The findings showed a significantly greater severity of childhood trauma in general, and

Impact of childhood abuse history on psychological symptoms among male and female soldiers in the U.S. Army.

The long-term psychological effects of four different types of childhood maltreatment were examined among 1,072 male and 305 female soldiers on active duty in the United States Army. The predictor variables included four subscales from the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ)-(1) physical-emotional abuse, (2) sexual abuse, (3) emotional neglect, and (4) physical neglect. An additional sexual abuse variable based on the four screening questions developed by Finkelhor, Hotaling, Lewis, and Smith (1990) was also included. Outcome was measured by the Brief Symptom Inventory and a dissociation scal

The 2-year stability of parental perceptions of child vulnerability and parental overprotection.

Clinicians often identify parent-child relationships that are believed to be problematic for the child's future emotional growth, yet there are minimal outcome data on which to base anticipatory guidance. This 2-year follow-up study examined the stability and child behavioral correlates of parental perceptions of increased child vulnerability and parental overprotection. Of 192 potential participants, 114 parents (93% mothers, 86% white, 75% married, 90% middle-upper socioeconomic status) with children age 4 to 7 years successfully completed the Parent Protection Scale, Child Vulnerability Sca

Parental abusive versus supportive behaviors and their relation to hostility and aggression in young adults.

The relation of parental support to abuse has rarely been considered in research on the sequelae of childhood abuse in adulthood. In this study, using the Exposure to Abusive and Supportive Environments Parenting Inventory (EASE-PI), young adults who reported higher emotionally abusive parenting (EA) consistently reported significantly lower love and support from both parents. The relation between physically abusive parenting (PA) and love/support depended upon gender of parent and child. EA was significantly related to higher hostility and higher aggression, as measured by the Buss-Durkee Hos

Suicidality in college women who were sexually and physically abused and physically punished by parents.

In order to ascertain if physically abused, sexually abused, physically punished, and nonabused/nonpunished women students reported different levels of suicidality, 182 women completed measures of suicidality, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and physical punishment. Women who reported sexual abuse were more suicidal than all other groups, and those physically abused were more suicidal than those nonabused/nonpunished. In a multiple regression, sexual abuse accounted for the most variance in suicidality (15%). Apparently women who report sexual or physical abuse, but not ordinary physical punishm

The ability of adolescents to predict future outcome. Part II: Therapeutic enhancement of predictive skills.

The assertion of autonomy, a developmental challenge of adolescence, helps predict the teenager's attitude toward pregnancy and parenthood. Significantly, the ability to predict the future relationship with the infant has direct implications for the achievement of an adaptive outcome. Indeed, the interpersonal outcome of the parent-infant relationship may be predicted by the adolescent's behaviors with her infant. A prospective orientation may offer an important vantage point for improving this relationship. For example, the ability to predict future outcome helps identify potential conflict,

Cognitive antecedents of imitativeness and persistence in children with mental retardation.

Two studies with children with mild mental retardation were conducted within the framework of the cognitive orientation theory, which describes how cognitive contents and processes guide behavior and thus enable behavior predictions and modifications. The studies were designed to test whether specific clusters of beliefs would predict imitation and persistence among individuals with mental retardation. Behavioral measures and questionnaires that assessed beliefs were administered. The belief scores were related significantly to the behaviors. Implications concerning motivation, the development

Factors associated with abusive relationships among maltreated and nonmaltreated youth.

This study sought to understand how experiences of maltreatment occurring prior to 12 years of age affect adolescent peer and dating relationships. A school-based sample of 15-year-olds was divided into maltreated (n = 132) and nonmaltreated (n = 227) subgroups based on self-reported maltreatment. These two groups were then compared on two theoretically determined dimensions of adjustment (i.e., interpersonal sensitivity/hostility; personal resourceS) and self- and teacher-report measures of peer and dating relationships. Findings supported the hypothesis that maltreated youths significantly d

Comparison of neuro-metabolites in borderline and antisocial personality disorders: A study based on proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

The aim of this study was to investigate the neurochemical differences between borderline personality disorder (BPD) and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H-MRS) in order to explore these disorders at a neurobiological level. In this cross-sectional study, 60 individuals with BPD and 60 individuals with ASPD participated. ¹H-MRS was performed using a Discovery MR 750 Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner with a 3.0 Tesla field strength to measure the levels of the metabolites GABA/Cr, N-acetylaspartate (NAA)/Cr, and glutamate (Glu)/Cr in t

An explainable multimodal artificial intelligence model for classifying suicide attempters with borderline personality disorder: a pilot study.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a severe mental disorder marked by emotional dysregulation. Estimates show that 73% of patients with BPD will have, on average, three suicide attempts in their lifetime, with up to 10% of cases resulting in death. Reliable tools to identify risk factors associated with suicide are lacking. Artificial Intelligence (AI) could fill this gap, supporting the development of effective intervention strategies. This pilot study provides preliminary evidence that a multimodal signature could differentiate suicide attempts in individuals with BPD, paving the way t

Self-other generalisation shapes social interaction and is disrupted in borderline personality disorder.

Generalising information from ourselves to others, and others to ourselves allows for both a dependable source of navigation and adaptability in interpersonal exchange. Disturbances to social development in sensitive periods can cause enduring and distressing damage to lasting healthy relationships. However, identifying the mechanisms of healthy exchange has been difficult. We introduce a theory of self-other generalisation tested with data from a three-phase social value orientation task - the Intentions Game. We involved humans with (n=50) and without (n=53) a diagnosis of borderline persona

A cybernetic theory of autism: Autism as a consequence of low trait plasticity.

OBJECTIVE: According to Cybernetic Big Five Theory (CB5T), personality traits reflect variation in the parameters of evolved cybernetic mechanisms, and extreme manifestations of these traits correspond to a risk for psychopathology because they threaten the organism's ability to pursue its goals effectively. Our theory of autism as a consequence of low Plasticity extends CB5T to provide a cybernetic account of the origin of autistic traits. The theory argues that, because all psychological competencies are initially developed through exploration, typical development requires sensitivity to the

The Associations between Obsessive Compulsive Personality Traits, Self-Efficacy, and Exercise Addiction.

Exercise addiction refers to maladaptive exercise patterns involving compulsivity and addiction-like behaviors. Exercise addiction has been found to relate to negative physical and mental health outcomes such as heart abnormalities, physical injuries, and interpersonal conflicts. Based on the social cognitive theory, this study investigated the extent to which the interplay of obsessive compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) traits and self-efficacy beliefs would influence the development and maintenance of exercise addiction. A total of 1228 college students in the United States responded to

Beyond Big Five trait domains: Stability and change in personality facets across midlife and old age.

OBJECTIVE: Accumulated evidence indicates both stable and malleable parts of inter-individual differences in the broad Big Five domains. Less is known, however, about stability and change at the more diversified facet level. With the current study, we fill this gap by investigating personality stability and change across midlife and old age. METHOD: We apply local structural equation measurement models and second-order growth curve models to four waves of data obtained with the full NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) collected over 11 years from 1667 adults (Mage  = 62.69 years, SDage  = 15

The role of leisure crafting for emotional exhaustion in telework during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: After the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, many employees transitioned from in-office work to telework to slow down the spread of the virus. Building on the Job Demands-Resources model, we examined day-level relationships between job demands, home demands and emotional exhaustion during telework. Moreover, we tested if leisure crafting (i.e., the proactive pursuit and enactment of leisure activities targeted at goal setting, socializing, growth and development) is negatively related to emotional exhaustion. We expected that proactive personality would be positively related t

The effect of maternal employment on the elementary and junior high school students' mental health in Maku.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Most experts view the childhood period as a foundation for shaping the individuals' fundamental future characteristics and behaviors. They believe that parents' personality and behavior quality exert a greater effect on the development of a child's personality than other factors. Given the mothers' role in children's mental health and considering the fact that children are a nation's future makers, the present study was designed to investigate the impact of maternal employment on students' mental health in Maku. MATERIALS & METHODS: The present study is descriptive and

Coping style predicts the (in)sensitivity for developing hyperinsulinemia on a high fat diet in rats.

The aim of this study was to explore interactions between coping style and diet as risk factors for developing insulin resistance in rats. We hypothesized that rats characterized by a passive coping strategy are more susceptible for developing insulin resistance and visceral obesity than proactively coping rats, particularly on a high (45%) fat diet. This hypothesis was tested by comparing 1) insulin and glucose responses to an intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT), and 2) body fat distribution, in two rat models for passive and proactive coping styles. We found that the most extremely pa
