Disability and receipt of the Papanicolaou test for cervical cancer screening: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To synthesize literature comparing Papanicolaou (Pap) test receipt between women with and without disabilities. METHODS: We searched the following databases from inception to March 1, 2024: OVID Medline (1946-), EBSCO CINAHL Plus (1981-), OVID EMBASE (1974-), and OVID APA PsycINFO (1806-). Eligible studies were peer-reviewed and compared receipt of Pap tests in women with physical, hearing, vision, or intellectual/developmental disability versus those without disabilities. We extracted data using a standardized form; study quality was appraised using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale; and

The Effect of Language Sample Elicitation Context on Complex Syntax Use and Productivity in Preschool-Age Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

PURPOSE: Speech-language pathologists tailor language sample elicitation methods to the goals of the assessment and the needs of each child. In school-age children, narrative retell and expository contexts elicit more complex language than conversational contexts. However, the impact of elicitation context on younger children has been less examined. This study examined how conversational, expository, and narrative retell contexts influence productivity and complex syntax in preschool-age children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) compared to peers with typical hearing (CTH). METHOD: This

Strategies to increase HIV testing among men who have sex with men and transgender women: an integrative review.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) are disproportionately affected by HIV, with much higher incidence and prevalence rates than in the general population in different countries. There are several barriers to testing among MSM and TGW, such as low risk perception, anticipation of HIV-related stigma, discrimination of sexual orientation, in addition to difficulties related to care and access to health services. Therefore, analyzing the available evidence of the effectiveness of strategies for scaling up HIV testing among key populations is essential to point

Psychosocial factors of insomnia in depression: a network approach.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) are common and deleterious. Childhood trauma, personality traits, interpersonal distress, and social support contribute to insomnia, but how they interact to affect insomnia remains uncertain. METHODS: A total of 791 patients with MDD completed the Insomnia Severity Index, Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, Interpersonal Relationship Comprehensive Diagnostic Scale, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, Social Support Rating Scale and Hamilton Depression Scale-17. This study utilized network analyses to identify the centr

Neuropsychological functioning of homeless people in Paris: An exploratory study.

Homelessness is a multifactorial issue, influenced by structural and individual factors. These factors include health status, which has been reported to be poorer among people experiencing homelessness. Although the somatic and mental health of homeless individuals has already been studied in France, to our knowledge, no research has been conducted on neuropsychological functioning in this country. Studies out with France have identified cognitive impairments as highly prevalent among homeless people, and these impairments are likely affected by local structural factors, such as healthcare acc

Challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness and their providers during the COVID-19 pandemic: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness are vulnerable to SARS-CoV-2 infection and its consequences. We aimed to understand the perspectives of people experiencing homelessness, and of the health care and shelter workers who cared for them, during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We conducted an interpretivist qualitative study in Toronto, Canada, from December 2020 to June 2021. Participants were people experiencing homelessness who received SARS-CoV-2 testing, health care workers and homeless shelter staff. We recruited participants via email, telephone or recruitment flyers. Using indi

Memory, fluid reasoning, and functional capacity in adults experiencing homelessness.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In individuals experiencing homelessness, determinants of functional capacity (i.e. the ability to perform activities of daily living) are poorly understood. Identifying potentially modifiable correlates of functional capacity, such as cognitive abilities, may inform treatment targets to address independence and housing stability. This study aimed to identify the strongest neuropsychological predictors of variance in functional performance in 100 adults living in a homeless shelter. METHODS: Participants completed a brief cognitive screening test, from which four com

Metric Transformations and the Filtered Monotonic Polynomial Item Response Model.

The [Formula: see text] metric in item response theory is often not the most useful metric for score reporting or interpretation. In this paper, I demonstrate that the filtered monotonic polynomial (FMP) item response model, a recently proposed nonparametric item response model (Liang & Browne in J Educ Behav Stat 40:5-34, 2015), can be used to specify item response models on metrics other than the [Formula: see text] metric. Specifically, I demonstrate that any item response function (IRF) defined within the FMP framework can be re-expressed as another FMP IRF by taking monotonic transformati

Dissociative identity disorder associated with mania and change in handedness.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the overlap between dissociative and bipolar disorders with reference to their neurophysiological foundations. BACKGROUND: Case reports of anomalous lateralization and shifts in handedness associated with both affective and dissociative conditions have intermittently surfaced in the literature. The two disorders are, however, usually considered to be distinct psychopathological entities. METHOD: A case of co-occurring bipolar disorder and dissociative identity disorder (DID) is presented. RESULTS: The "switch" in personality coincided with manic or hypomanic sympto

Rethinking the 'right not to know'.

The idea that an individual has a 'right not to know' genetic information about himself or herself is entrenched in both the policy sphere and the genetic counselling ethos. In this paper, I interrogate this idea of a 'right not to know', questioning particularly its status as a right. I identify the conception of rights that seems to underlie the posited 'right not to know' as a conception of rights in which they are prioritised non-outweighable interests. Turning to a series of hypothetical situations in which the 'right not to know' is invoked, I argue that the 'right not to know' is not a

A neuropsychological approach to the assessment of adults with learning disabilities in vocational rehabilitation.

A description of cognitive, academic, and personality characteristics of adults with learning disabilities (LD) referred for services through the state/federal vocational rehabilitation system is presented. This study builds on the work of Minskoff, Hawks, Steidle, and Hoffmann (1989) and validates their conclusions that, as a group, adults with LD participating in vocational rehabilitation are homogeneous relative to other groups of adults with LD. By taking a neuropsychological approach to the assessment process, the current study further subdivided the assessment categories described by Min

Explanatory style and gambling: how pessimists respond to losing wagers.

Fifty-three patrons of a harness racing track completed two measures of explanatory style prior to an afternoon's races. One measure assessed general explanatory style, using bad events taken from the Attributional Style Questionnaire, and the other measure assessed betting-specific explanatory style, using bad events specific to harness race betting. Subjects then kept a diary during the first eight races. After each race, they reported how much they had bet, whether they had won or lost, the major cause of the outcome, their confidence about winning future bets, and whether they were ruminat

Locus of control in children with learning disabilities and hyperactivity: a subgroup analysis.

The Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale (Nowicki & Strickland, 1973) was administered to 51 boys, ages 7 to 9 years. Children were classified into four separate diagnostic groups: (a) attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADDH), (b) learning disabled (LD), (c) ADDH-LD, and (d) controls. Results of a 2 X 2 (ADDH X LD) analysis of variance indicated that the LD diagnostic dimension was associated with heightened externality. Locus of control scores were not found to be significantly related to scores on a variety of other descriptive and diagnostic measures with the exception of I

Potential for hostility and dimensions of anger.

Recent reviews have linked Potential for Hostility derived from the Structured Interview (SI) to coronary artery disease, independent of the global Type A pattern. The present study examined the construct validity of Potential for Hostility ratings by correlating Potential for Hostility with 21 scales from four widely used anger/hostility measures: 7 scales from the Anger Self-Report, 8 scales from the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory, the total score from the Novaco Anger Inventory, and 5 scales from the Multidimensional Anger Inventory. The pattern of correlations revealed that Potential for

Effects of aggressive and nonaggressive rock songs on projective and structured tests.

The differences between hostility scores on projective and objective tests as a function of listening to aggressive or nonaggressive rock music were studied. While taking the Thematic Apperception Test (Cards 1, 3BM, 4, 9BM, and 10) and the Buss-Durkee (1957) Hostility Scale, subjects (N = 90) randomly assigned to one of three groups listened to a rock song with (a) nonaggressive music and nonaggressive lyrics, (b) aggressive music and nonaggressive lyrics, or (c) aggressive music and aggressive lyrics. TAT stories were scored for aggressive content according to Hafner and Kaplan's (1960) host

Psychologic follow-up of personality factors in the chromosomal anomaly of Klinefelter's syndrome.

The authors deal with the psychopathology of the genetic-andrologic disorder of Klinefelter's syndrome. The problem is analysed from the point of view of mental level, personal characteristics, sexual life and tendency to psychical maladaptation in this disorder. In the theoretical part the results of researches of other authors are summarized. In the research the given hypotheses are verified in nine sample cases of the 47 XXY syndrome and the sample is characterized. The total results enable to recognize several psychologic correlations of the mentioned syndrome, and the complete clinical pi

Dysthymic distress and hostile personality characteristics in Greek student nurses: a comparative study.

A comparative evaluation of anxiety, depression and personality deviances of student nurses was attempted, using Foulds' 'Scale of anxiety and depression and personality deviance' on Greek student nurses and on controls from other schools. It was found that: Greek student nurses scored higher in depression than student teachers and the Greek women sample, Greek student nurses scored higher in intropunitiveness than the Greek women sample, but there was no difference between student nurses and the control groups in all the personality deviances, and The younger the students, the higher their sc

Alcoholism, anxiety disorders, and agoraphobia.

A group of 48 inpatient alcoholics were studied using the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia--Life-time Version (SADS-L) and the Brief Standard Self-rating for Phobic Patients. Approximately one-quarter of the patients were diagnosed as suffering from agoraphobia and social and mixed phobias. Approximately 44% were diagnosed as suffering from anxiety disorders and 46% had suffered from an episode of major depression. Data from the self-rating questionnaire were consistent with the diagnostic data. The alcoholics with phobias had experienced more severe dysphoric feelings than n

Non-organic acute upper airway obstruction: description and a diagnostic approach.

We describe 3 cases of upper airway obstruction in which no organic cause could be identified. All 3 patients presented with severe dyspnea and stridor. Direct laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy failed to demonstrate any lesion. Flow-volume loops showed a pattern of severe variable extrathoracic airway obstruction with a decreased peak inspiratory flow and an increased ratio of the forced expiratory flow at 50% vital capacity to the forced inspiratory flow at the same lung volume. Plethysmographically measured airway resistance was normal in the 2 patients for whom it was obtained. We believe a fun
