Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film degradation potential of marine fungi isolated from microplastics, beach sand, and coastal seawater.

Plastic pollution, resulting from the widespread use of plastics, their high production volumes, their ability to remain in the environment for long periods without decomposing, is one of the most significant global environmental problems, negatively impacting ecosystems, biodiversity, and human health. This study aimed to isolate marine fungi associated with microplastics, beach sand, and coastal seawater and evaluate their potential to modify low-density polyethylene (LDPE) under laboratory conditions. In total, 30 fungal isolates were obtained from beach sand, coastal seawater, and micropla

Clinical and radiological outcomes when using standard versus retentive polyethylene humeral cups in Delta III reverse shoulder arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: The most common postoperative complication relating to reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) is instability. The risk factors for luxation include a lack of the subscapularis tendon or inadequate soft tissue tension, the prosthetic design, the bone deficiency, the obesity, and mechanical factors such as bone impingement and implant position. To prevent this luxation, we can insert a retentive polyethylene humeral cup, The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes, the incidence of luxation and scapular notching between standard versus retentive polyethylene h

Single-nucleus transcriptomics reveals cell-type-resolved brain responses to concurrent exposure to polyethylene nanoplastics and butyl benzyl phthalate.

The co-occurrence of plastic-derived particles and plastic-associated chemicals represents an emerging toxicological concern, yet their combined neurotoxicity remains insufficiently understood. Here, we evaluated whether repeated oral concurrent exposure to polyethylene nanoplastics (PE-NPs) and butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) aggravates neurotoxic outcomes and characterized associated cell-type-resolved brain responses. In HT-22 neuronal cells, concentration-response matrix analysis revealed a positive interaction pattern between PE-NPs and BBP. A 90-day oral exposure model was then established

Tensile Force Applied Prior to Cutting Affects Knot Security in Small-Caliber Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Suture.

PURPOSE: Given their stiffness, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) sutures exhibit poor knot-holding capacity and are prone to unraveling. Surgeons often add extra throws to enhance knot security, leading to bulky knots, which can be problematic in procedures like flexor tendon repair. This study evaluated how different tensile forces applied to the suture ends prior to cutting affect the knot security of UHMWPE sutures. METHODS: Two UHMWPE suture sizes, 3-0 and #2, were tested using an axial torsional test frame. Tensile preload forces of 2, 3, or 5 lbs were applied to the sut

Enhanced CO2 gasification of polyethylene terephthalate using a two-stage gasification process to produce CO-rich and tar-deficient syngas.

This study demonstrates that a two-stage gasification process consisting of a fluidized bed gasifier followed by a tar-cracking reactor packed with activated carbon enables stable and efficient CO2 gasification of polyethylene terephthalate. Conventional fluidized-bed CO2 gasification typically suffers from low CO2 conversion due to limited gas-solid residence time and the inherently low reactivity of CO2. In contrast, the present two-stage configuration significantly enhances CO2 utilization by first fixing polyethylene terephthalate-derived tar on activated carbon and subsequently promoting

Acinetobacter guillouiae, a lipolytic strain isolated from sludge capable of partially depolymerising polyethylene terephthalate: genomic, proteomic, and biochemical insights.

Acinetobacter guillouiae I-MWF was isolated by incubating amorphous polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film in sludge samples. The strain partially depolymerised PET powder with 11.3% crystallinity, as confirmed by FT-IR, HPLC-UV, and LC-MS analyses. Extracellular enzymes released terephthalic acid (TPA), mono(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (MHET), and bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET). Genomic analysis identified 18 putative extracellular hydrolases, including lipases and esterases, each with a conserved catalytic triad. Proteomic profiling revealed expression of two triacylglycerol lipas

Photoelectrochemical aptasensor for ultrasensitive detection of MUC1 based on titanium dioxide/polypyrrole/carboxy polyethylene glycol hybrid anti-fouling interface.

Achieving ultrasensitive detection of MUC1 in the early stages of breast cancer is critical for reducing mortality and improving patient prognoses. Photoelectrochemical sensing has emerged as a promising technology for the detection of MUC1, primarily due to its straightforward operation and user-friendly instrumentation. However, titanium dioxide, a commonly used photoactive material, exhibits inherent limitations, including low charge carrier mobility and challenges related to non-specific adsorption in complex biological matrices. These issues significantly undermine the sensitivity of MUC1

Quercetin attenuates polyethylene terephthalate nanoplastic-induced malignant phenotypes linked to APOE stabilization and lipid metabolic reprogramming in prostate cancer.

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are emerging environmental contaminants with increasing evidence of biological activity in mammalian systems. However, the molecular mechanisms by which chronic polyethylene terephthalate nanoplastic (PET-NPs) exposure promotes prostate cancer progression, and whether this process can be attenuated by quercetin, remain poorly understood. DU-145 and LNCaP cells were subjected to repeated PET-NPs exposure and analyzed using functional assays, DIA proteomics, protein-stability and ubiquitination assays, APOE loss- and gain-of-function experiments, and xenograft mode

Repeated oral exposure to polyethylene microplastics induces thyroid toxicity in rats: Evidence from in vivo toxicokinetics and multi-omics analyses.

The widespread use and non-biodegradable nature of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) have prompted significant public concern about their safety. However, the mechanisms underlying their adverse effects on human health remain largely elusive. Male rats were orally administered 34-μm PE-MPs via daily gavage for 28 consecutive days, with three dose groups set at 0.6, 6.0, and 60.0 mg/kg body weight (bw), respectively. The results showed that exposure to PE-MPs induced a decrease in serum triiodothyronine (T3) levels, accompanied by an increased incidence of thyroid follicular dilation, both of
