The purpose of this study was to investigate how non-verbal visual reinforcement provided by the audiologist during speech testing influences performance in the elderly. Thirty-two volunteers with age-related hearing loss with or without dual sensory-impairment (DSI), were administered a speech audiometry test in which they repeated lists of ten disyllabic words in two different conditions, namely with and without visual reinforcement. Perceived exertion caused by the extraocular muscles was assessed as a function of the direction of gaze and recorded in 114 subjects using a psychometric method. The results confirm statements in the literature that maximum comfort is achieved when gaze is aimed downwards. We found no correlations between perceived exertion and age or viewing distance. The relationship is relevant to ergonomics, for example in lens fitting and workplace layout.

PURPOSE: To report visual outcomes and quality after bilateral implantation of a single-piece diffractive multifocal intraocular lens (MIOL) with a bifocal design.
DESIGN: Prospective, observational case series.
METHODS: All presbyopic subjects were implanted with the ZMB00 MIOL (Abbott Medical Optics) at the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital. We evaluated the distance, intermediate, and near visual acuity (VA) under photopic and mesopic conditions; contrast sensitivity with and without glare under photopic and mesopic conditions; quality of vision; and rate of spectacle independence.

PURPOSE: To determine whether bifocal soft contact lenses with a distance center design provide myopic defocus to the peripheral retina similar to corneal reshaping contact lenses.
METHODS: Myopic subjects underwent five cycloplegic autorefraction readings centrally and at 10, 20, and 30 degrees temporally, nasally, superiorly, and inferiorly while wearing Proclear Multifocal "D" contact lenses with a +2.00-diopter add power (CooperVision, Fairport, NY) and after wearing Corneal Refractive Therapy (Paragon Vision Sciences, Mesa, AZ) contact lenses for 2 weeks.

We explored the relative changes in ocular, corneal, and internal aberrations associated with normal aging with special emphasis in the role of ocular alignment and lens shape factor in the balance of aberrations. PURPOSE: To evaluate stereoacuity before and after refractive lens exchange (RLE) with AcrySof ReSTOR intraocular lens (IOL) implantation.
METHODS: Stereoacuity was measured using the Titmus stereotest at 40 cm under photopic conditions (85 cd/m(2)) before and after RLE with bilateral AcrySof ReSTOR Natural (SN60D3 model) implantation in 30 hyperopic eyes of presbyopes with low astigmatism (< or =1.00 diopter [D]).
