Recovery of biological motion perception and network plasticity after cerebellar tumor removal.

Visual perception of body motion is vital for everyday activities such as social interaction, motor learning or car driving. Tumors to the left lateral cerebellum impair visual perception of body motion. However, compensatory potential after cerebellar damage and underlying neural mechanisms remain unknown. In the present study, visual sensitivity to point-light body motion was psychophysically assessed in patient SL with dysplastic gangliocytoma (Lhermitte-Duclos disease) to the left cerebellum before and after neurosurgery, and in a group of healthy matched controls. Brain activity during pr

Coding of electric pulse trains presented through cochlear implants in the auditory midbrain of awake rabbit: comparison with anesthetized preparations.

Cochlear implant (CI) listeners show limits at high frequencies in tasks involving temporal processing such as rate pitch and interaural time difference discrimination. Similar limits have been observed in neural responses to electric stimulation in animals with CI; however, the upper limit of temporal coding of electric pulse train stimuli in the inferior colliculus (IC) of anesthetized animals is lower than the perceptual limit. We hypothesize that the upper limit of temporal neural coding has been underestimated in previous studies due to the confound of anesthesia. To test this hypothesis,

Perceptual integration for qualitatively different 3-D cues in the human brain.

The visual system's flexibility in estimating depth is remarkable: We readily perceive 3-D structure under diverse conditions from the seemingly random dots of a "magic eye" stereogram to the aesthetically beautiful, but obviously flat, canvasses of the Old Masters. Yet, 3-D perception is often enhanced when different cues specify the same depth. This perceptual process is understood as Bayesian inference that improves sensory estimates. Despite considerable behavioral support for this theory, insights into the cortical circuits involved are limited. Moreover, extant work tested quantitatively

Peripheral and central nervous contribution to gastrointestinal symptoms in diabetic patients with autonomic neuropathy.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Long-term diabetes mellitus (DM) has been associated with neuronal changes in the enteric, peripheral and/or central nervous system. Moreover, abnormal visceral sensation and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are seen in up to 75% of patients. To explore the role of diabetic autonomic neuropathy (DAN) in patients with long-standing DM, we investigated psychophysical responses and neuronal activity recorded as evoked brain potentials and dipolar source modelling. METHODS: Fifteen healthy volunteers and 14 type-1 DM patients with DAN were assessed with a symptom score index char

Temporal discrimination in patients with dystonia and tremor and patients with essential tremor.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether psychophysical techniques assessing temporal discrimination could help in differentiating patients who have tremor associated with dystonia or essential tremor. METHODS: We tested somatosensory temporal discrimination thresholds (TDT) and temporal discrimination movement thresholds (TDMT) in 39 patients who had tremor associated with dystonia or essential tremor presenting with upper-limb tremor of comparable severity and compared their findings with those from a group of 25 sex- and age-matched healthy control subjects. RESULTS: TDT was higher in patients w

fMRI evidence of degeneration-induced neuropathic pain in diabetes: enhanced limbic and striatal activations.

Persistent neuropathic pain due to peripheral nerve degeneration in diabetes is a stressful symptom; however, the underlying neural substrates remain elusive. This study attempted to explore neuroanatomical substrates of thermal hyperalgesia and burning pain in a diabetic cohort due to pathologically proven cutaneous nerve degeneration (the painful group). By applying noxious 44°C heat stimuli to the right foot to provoke neuropathic pain symptoms, brain activation patterns were compared with those of healthy control subjects and patients with a similar degree of cutaneous nerve degeneration b

Differences in cigarette smoking behaviors among heroin inhalers versus heroin injectors.

INTRODUCTION: The high prevalence of cigarette smoking among heroin users has triggered many studies to explore possible interactions between cigarette smoking and heroin addiction; however, little is known about the relationship between cigarette smoking behaviors and routes of heroin administration. The present study provided the first examination of cigarette smoking status, motivation, and cigarette smoking cue reactivity among injecting or inhaling heroin users. METHODS: Forty-six heroin-dependent patients were recruited in the present study. A battery of self-report questionnaires was u

In vivo visualization of olfactory pathophysiology induced by intranasal cadmium instillation in mice.

Intranasal exposure to cadmium has been related to olfactory dysfunction in humans and to nasal epithelial damage and altered odorant-guided behavior in rodent models. The pathophysiology underlying these deficits has not been fully elucidated. Here we use optical imaging techniques to visualize odorant-evoked neurotransmitter release from the olfactory nerve into the brain's olfactory bulbs in vivo in mice. Intranasal cadmium chloride instillations reduced this sensory activity by up to 91% in a dose-dependent manner. In the olfactory bulbs, afferents from the olfactory epithelium could be qu

Multisensory space: from eye-movements to self-motion.

We perceive the world around us as stable. This is remarkable given that our body parts as well as we ourselves are constantly in motion. Humans and other primates move their eyes more often than their hearts beat. Such eye movements lead to coherent motion of the images of the outside world across the retina. Furthermore, during everyday life, we constantly approach targets, avoid obstacles or otherwise move in space. These movements induce motion across different sensory receptor epithels: optical flow across the retina, tactile flow across the body surface and even auditory flow as detected

Assessment of trigeminal nerve functions by quantitative sensory testing in patients and healthy volunteers.

PURPOSE: Orofacial sensory dysfunction plays an important role in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Quantitative sensory testing (QST) is a psychophysical approach to evaluate thermal and mechanical somatosensation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The present human study 1) collected normative QST data in extraoral and intraoral regions, 2) analyzed effects of age, gender, and anatomical sites on QST, and 3) applied QST in 11 patients with iatrogenic inferior alveolar nerve lesions. Sixty (30 male and 30 female) healthy volunteers were tested bilaterally in the innervation areas of infraorbital, mental,

Neuronal correlates in the modulation of placebo analgesia in experimentally-induced esophageal pain: a 3T-fMRI study.

Visceral pain/discomfort is the cardinal complaints and treatment targets for functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID). However, effective treatment for such pain is limited and often associated with high placebo effects. The mechanisms of placebo effects in visceral pain are unclear. We used functional neuroimaging to study the central representations of the placebo effect and its anticipation during esophageal pain in healthy adults. Fourteen subjects were enrolled. Pain extent, psychophysical inventories [Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PAS), visual analogue scale (VAS) and short-form McGil

[An experience providing home care to a victim of cerebral vascular accident and purple urine bag syndrome].

This article presents the case of a victim of cerebral vascular accident with long duration of urinary catheterization, who developed a purple urine bag syndrome (PUBS) because of deficiency of knowledge and skills in home care and lack of communication and support among family members. In this case, the main caregivers also experienced psychophysical fatigue and fear, which diminished family coping ability. During the period of nursing care, from March 10 to August 15, 2006, we carried out 10 home care visits and eight telephone consultations. Exiting urinary tract infection, constipation, an

Neuroleptic-induced parkinsonism is associated with olfactory dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: There is increasing evidence for olfactory deficits in patients with extrapyramidal disorders, but little is known about their occurrence in patients with drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS). The present study was performed to investigate olfactory function in depressed patients with drug-induced parkinsonism under treatment with D2-blocking neuroleptic drugs compared to depressed controls on similar neuroleptic dose without EPS (no-EPS), and neuroleptic-naive depressed controls (no-NL). METHODS: A total of 79 depressed patients with (N = 59) and without psychotic features (

The influence of adaptation on visual motion detection in chronic sixth nerve palsy after treatment with botulinum toxin.

PURPOSE: To investigate changes in visual motion perception after treatment with botulinum toxin in patients with unilateral chronic lateral rectus muscle palsy. METHODS: Five patients and control subjects were asked to report the perceived drift direction of a sinusoidal grating that was initially stationary and then began to accelerate at 0.09 degrees /sec2 in a horizontal direction. The grating had a field size of 18.5 degrees and was presented monocularly with a contrast just above threshold for visibility for central vision. Both the paretic and non-affected eyes were tested. Visual search and eye movements in patients with chronic solvent-induced toxic encephalopathy.

Various aspects of visual perception have been found to be impaired in patients with occupational chronic solvent-induced toxic encephalopathy (CSE). The purpose of the study was to characterise the changes in eye movements and visual search performance in CSE patients. We measured eye movements of 13 CSE patients and 22 healthy controls during dynamic visual search task by using a fast video eye tracker. The task was to search for and identify a target letter among numerals presented in a rectangular stimulus matrix (3x3-10x10 items). Threshold search time, i.e. the duration of stimulus prese

Integrative cortical dysfunction and pervasive motion perception deficit in fragile X syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is associated with neurologic deficits recently attributed to the magnocellular pathway of the lateral geniculate nucleus. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypotheses that FXS individuals 1) have a pervasive visual motion perception impairment affecting neocortical circuits in the parietal lobe and 2) have deficits in integrative neocortical mechanisms necessary for perception of complex stimuli. METHODS: Psychophysical tests of visual motion and form perception defined by either first-order (luminance) or second-order (texture) attributes were used to probe early

[Vergence dynamics and variability of fixation disparity in school children with reading-spelling disorders].

BACKGROUND: New computer-controlled psychophysical procedures allow one to measure some temporal aspects of binocular coordination. The present study investigates whether these procedures can be operated by children and whether the tests are useful to detect previously reported impairments in dynamics and stability of vergence in children with disability in reading and writing. METHODS: To assess the variability in vergence accuracy (fixation disparity), a stationary fusion stimulus appeared on a computer monitor superimposed by short-term presentations of two dichoptic vertical nonius lines

Predicting the threshold of single-pulse electrical stimuli using a stochastic auditory nerve model: the effects of noise.

An important factor that may play a role in speech recognition by individuals with cochlear implants is that electrically stimulated nerves respond with a much higher level of synchrony than is normally observed in acoustically stimulated nerves. Recent work has indicated that the addition of noise to an electrical stimulus may result in neural responses whose statistical characteristics are more similar to those observed in acoustically driven neurons. Psychophysical data have indicated that performance on some tasks might also be enhanced by the addition of noise. However, little theoretical

Disabled readers suffer from visual and auditory impairments but not from a specific magnocellular deficit.

The magnocellular theory is a prominent, albeit controversial view asserting that many reading disabled (RD) individuals suffer from a specific impairment within the visual magnocellular pathway. In order to assess the validity of this theory we tested its two basic predictions. The first is that a subpopulation of RD subjects will show impaired performance across a broad range of psychophysical tasks relying on magnocellular functions. The second is that this subpopulation will not be consistently impaired across tasks that do not rely on magnocellular functions. We defined a behavioural crit
