The biological effectiveness of carbon ions relative to gamma rays (RBE) was compared between the tumor growth delay and an early skin reaction of syngeneic mice. The RBE was larger for a tumor than skin when irradiated with large doses of high-LET (linear energy transfer) carbon ions. PURPOSE: To study the correlation of residual DNA double-strand breakage after irradiation and cellular radiosensitivity in cells showing marked differences in radiosensitivity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The levels of DNA double-strand breaks remaining at 4 h after irradiation were measured by graded-voltage gel electrophoresis in fibroblast cell strains derived from seven individuals either with normal radiosensitivity (n = 2), or with genetic abnormalities known to show increased (two ataxia telangiectasia, one scid) or possibly decreased (two Li-Fraumeni family members) sensitivity.

Fifty-six pectoralis major island flap procedures were carried out in 52 patients for the immediate reconstruction of defects after resection of head, neck or thoracic tumors. 105 patients with late stage radiation skin injury were treated from 1970 to 1986, using drugs combined with surgical intervention according to the clinical features of the injury. Drug therapy consisted of topical application of urea, antibiotics, trypsin and elastase, and systematic use of alpha 2-Macroglobulin. Of 62 patients receiving medication, 55 (88.7%) were completely or basically treated and 7 failed. Of 51 lesions of 43 patients receiving surgical treatment, 47 healed by first intention. In 4 patients, necrosis of partial and/or peripheral skin flaps healed after renewed repair.

There are two facilities for clinical trials with protons in Japan: the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS), Chiba, and the Particle Radiation Medical Science Center (PARMS), University of Tsukuba. This study deals with 524 cases of uterine cervix (except stade IV cases) completely treated at the Foundation Curie with esclusive radiotherapy from from 1962 to 1968. The irradiation techniques, as well as the doses given to the tumor and to the critical organs are stated. The various sequelae and complications are described, according to the class and severity.
