The role of female reproductive fluid in mediating reproductive isolation between ecotypes of the three-spined stickleback.

Female reproductive fluid (FRF) is increasingly recognised as a potent mediator of gametic-level cryptic female mating bias in external fertilisers, yet its role in reproductive isolation during early ecological divergence remains largely untested. We examined whether FRF from three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) females on North Uist differentially attracts and sustains sperm from armourless (acidic loch) versus armoured (basic loch) ecotypes. Using a fully crossed diallel design across four allopatric populations and a sympatric contact zone, we quantified spermatozoa accumulati

Next-Generation Dietary Antioxidants in Women's Reproductive Health: Mechanisms, Reproductive Outcomes, and Therapeutic Potential.

Oxidative stress has emerged as a key factor regulating female fertility, reproductive aging, and the development of various gynecologic and pregnancy-associated diseases. While physiological concentrations of reactive oxygen species play a fundamental role in many aspects of normal reproduction such as folliculogenesis, oocyte maturation, implantation, and placental development, abnormal or chronic oxidative stress impairs redox homeostasis and promotes mitochondrial dysfunction, inflammation, DNA damage, and cellular senescence. Recent research interest has shifted toward next-generation die…

Recent advances in sex-specific reproductive microphysiological systems for the systematic evaluation of assisted reproductive technology.

The rising global burden of infertility continues to increase clinical reliance on assisted reproductive technology (ART), yet overall outcomes remain constrained by limited physiological fidelity of conventional two-dimensional (2D) culture and animal models. Microphysiological systems (MPSs) offer an in vitro platform with enhanced human physiological relevance that can reconstruct reproductive microenvironments through engineered compartmentalization, quantitative fluid flow control, and stable long-term culture. Here, we systematically map recent advances in sex-specific reproductive MPS a

How phytochemicals influence reproductive outcomes in women receiving assisted reproductive techniques: a systematic review.

CONTEXT: Over the past few years, there has been an increasing amount of scholarly literature suggesting a connection between the nutritional status of pregnant mothers and early fetal development, as well as the long-term health consequences of their offspring. Multiple studies have documented that alterations in dietary patterns prior to conception have the potential to affect the initial stages of embryonic development. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to perform a comprehensive review of the research pertaining to the correlation between phytochemicals ( specifically, polyphenols, ca

Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy optimizes reproductive outcomes in recurrent reproductive failure: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent reproductive failure (RRF) is a common pregnancy complication, imposing great physical, emotional and financial burden for the suffered couples. The leading cause of RRF is believed to be aneuploid embryo, which could be solved by preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) in theory. With molecular genetic development, PGT-A based on comprehensive chromosomal screening (CCS) procedures and blastocyst biopsy is widely applied in clinical practice. However, its effects in RRF were not defined yet. METHODS: A systematic bibliographical search was conducted wit

Same-sex Pairs Retain Their Reproductive Capacity as a Potential Opportunity for Individual Reproductive Success in Termites.

In eusocial termites, successful pairing is an essential element of dispersal and distribution after the departure of alates from natal colonies. Two situations could arise during the pairing process: mixed-sex pairs and same-sex pairs. However, most previous studies focused on mixed-sex pairs, overlooking groups formed by same-sex pairings, especially potential fecundity (the total number of oocytes or ovarioles), oogenesis and the development stage of oocytes of females in female-female pairs, and spermatogenesis and testis development of males in male-male pairs. In this study, through expe

The age at first reproduction as a potential mediator between facial fluctuating asymmetry and reproductive success in women.

OBJECTIVES: The level of fluctuating asymmetry is suggested as a putative signal of developmental stability, thus according to this theoretical framework more symmetric individuals should be in better biological condition and have greater reproductive potential. Here we hypothesize that women with more symmetric faces have more successful reproduction. METHODS: Data were collected from 164 postmenopausal Polish women. Facial photographs were taken and the overall facial asymmetry (OFA) was calculated. The associations between the OFA and reproductive parameters were analyzed using multiple re…

Genetic polymorphisms of reproductive hormones and their receptors in assisted reproduction technology for patients with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrinopathies in women of childbearing, which is defined by the accumulation of multiple, small fluid-filled ovarian cysts without the selection of a single dominant follicle. Most PCOS phenotypes are characterized by the absence of spontaneous ovulation, resistance toward ovulation inductors, the production of a large immature oocytes number, and the high prevalence of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, resulting in reduced assisted reproductive technologies (ART) programs effectiveness. The review analyses current data about the r

Knockout of the Gnrh genes in zebrafish: effects on reproduction and potential compensation by reproductive and feeding-related neuropeptides.

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GNRH) is known as a pivotal upstream regulator of reproduction in vertebrates. However, reproduction is not compromised in the hypophysiotropic Gnrh3 knockout line in zebrafish (gnrh3-/-). In order to determine if Gnrh2, the only other Gnrh isoform in zebrafish brains, is compensating for the loss of Gnrh3, we generated a double Gnrh knockout zebrafish line. Surprisingly, the loss of both Gnrh isoforms resulted in no major impact on reproduction, indicating that a compensatory response, outside of the Gnrh system, was evoked. A plethora of factors acting along t…

Pancreatic autoimmunity: An unknown etiology on patients with assisted reproductive techniques (ART)-recurrent reproductive failure.

Pancreatic Autoimmunity is defined as the presence of autoantibodies and more frequent need for insulin treatment. Affected women presenting recurrent implantation failure (RIF) or recurrent miscarriage (RM) are often misdiagnosed. The objective of thestudy was to describe clinical and metabolic profiles suggestive of Pancreatic Autoimmunity and therapeutic strategy in patients with RIF/RM. We analyzed retrospectively 735 patients, and have identified a subset (N = 20) with similar metabolic characteristics. At the same time, we included a control group (n = 39), with similar demographic chara

Early menarche as an alternative reproductive tactic in human females: an evolutionary approach to reproductive health issues.

The age at which a female reaches sexual maturity is critical in determining her future reproductive health and success. Thus, a worldwide decline in menarcheal age (timing of first menstrual period) may have serious long-term consequences. Early menarcheal timing (first menstrual period before age 12) can have a negative effect on fecundity, as well as the quality and quantity of offspring, and may consequently influence population growth or decline. In this paper, we apply an evolutionary framework to modern human health, and assess both proximate and ultimate consequences of declining menar

Public perceptions of reproductive biotechnologies: the case of farm animal breeding and reproduction in France and the United Kingdom.

Results of previous qualitative and quantitative stages of the research project demonstrated that, although consumers had poor knowledge about breeding and reproduction procedures, they were concerned about the impact of breeding practices on their food items. They acknowledged breeding and reproduction to be at the very core of animal-based food chain process. Since however modern breeding programmers beg so much for genetics, their practices increasingly raised consumer concerns. This paper presents results of a research addressing this issue and based on interviews of livestock breeders and…

Evaluation of the reproductive and developmental safety of cysteamine in the rat: effects on female reproduction and early embryonic development.

Cystinosis is an autosomal recessive metabolic disease in which the amino acid cystine accumulates in lysosomes due to a defect in lysosomal cystine transport. Cystinosis in infancy is associated with poor growth, muscle wastage, and death at about age 10 due to kidney failure. Treatment with cysteamine and kidney transplantation enables cystinotic girls to reach reproductive age and to be healthy enough to permit pregnancy. It is not known whether exposure to cysteamine will have adverse effects on reproduction in the human. It is also possible that some of the complications seen in cystinoti…
