Powassan virus: persistence of virus activity during 1966.

Powassan virus isolations were achieved from three of 60 pools of Ixodes cookei ticks removed from 286 groundhogs (Marmota monax) which were collected some 200 miles north of Toronto between May 5 and September 5, 1966. Virus yields per pool of one to 11 ticks ranged from 10(2.5) to 10(6.0) TCD(50) for primary swine kidney tissue cultures, and positive pools were collected on June 24, July 15 and August 10. Powassan neutralizing antibodies were detected by mouse inoculation tests in 143 of 362 animals including 127 of 286 groundhogs, 14 of 45 red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) and two of

Highly divergent virome in wild rodents of Xinjiang, China: Implications for rodent origin of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus 1.

Rodents play a pivotal role in the maintenance and transmission of zoonotic viruses. The Yili River Valley, one of the most biodiverse regions in Xinjiang, functions as a critical biogeographic corridor linking China with Central and Western Asia, and historically with Europe via the ancient Silk Road. Despite its significance, the viral landscape of this region remains largely unexplored. To elucidate the virological landscape of this understudied region, meta-transcriptomic sequencing was conducted on wild rodent samples collected between 2020 and 2023, encompassing multiple host species and

Public health risk assessment of rodent-driven hantavirus spillover in Europe using a stochastic delay model.

INTRODUCTION: Hantavirus is a rodent-borne zoonotic disease in which rodents serve as the primary reservoir, while humans acquire infection through spillover exposure. To better understand the effects of environmental variability and delayed disease dynamics on transmission, this study develops a stochastic delay differential model that incorporates biologically relevant features of hantavirus spread. METHODS: An SIR-SIR transmission framework is formulated for interacting rodent and human populations. The deterministic model is extended by incorporating Brownian stochastic perturbations, dis

New records of tick-host mammal interactions (Acari: Ixodidae) in two conservation units of the Brazilian Amazon.

Ticks are ectoparasites of major public and veterinary health importance, and identifying their vertebrate hosts is crucial for recognizing pathogen reservoirs. This study investigated tick-wild mammal associations in two areas of the Brazilian Amazon. Between 2021 and 2023, wild mammals were captured using Tomahawk® and Sherman® traps, and ticks were collected manually or with forceps. A total of 110 wild mammals were captured, including 66 marsupials, 43 rodents, and one felid, representing 12 genera. Three species were identified at the species level: Didelphis marsupialis, Myoprocta pratti

Metatranscriptomics profiling reveals rodent- and shrew-borne viral diversity and evolutionary relationships in Guangzhou, China.

Emerging zoonotic infectious diseases, predominantly caused by viruses, pose increasing public health threats globally. Rodents and shrews are natural hosts for a variety of zoonotic viruses. Guangzhou is one of China's most densely populated cities and experiences frequent international and domestic population movements, making it a hotspot for infectious diseases. This study reports the metatranscriptomics virome of 208 rodents and shrews collected between June 2023 and December 2024 from four main urban areas (Tianhe, Baiyun, Liwan, Yuexiu) and five non-main urban areas (Zengcheng, Huadu, C

Neuromethods and assessment tools for traumatic spinal cord injury in rodents: A mini review.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most devastating neurological disorders associated with severe locomotor disability and a high rate of morbidity. Over the last 20-30 years, animal SCI models have proven to be extremely useful in better understanding the underlying molecular mechanism(s) involved in human traumatic SCI and in assessing the efficacy of available therapeutic agents. Thus, the current review article aims to provide readers with an overview of the methods used to induce traumatic SCI and highlight the recent advances in assessment of the functional recovery in rodent models.

Virome diversity in small mammals from south China: Insights into virus evolution, transmission, and ecology.

Mammals are critical reservoirs of human infectious diseases and the spillover of viruses is related to climate conditions. We conducted meta-transcriptomic sequencing of 226 mammals (bats, rodents, hedgehogs, and shrews) representing 20 species collected across eight cities in south China between 2018 and 2024. Samples included internal organs, oropharyngeal and anal swabs, and feces. We identified 63 vertebrate-associated viruses, including 34 novel viruses. Phylogenetic analysis revealed six viruses with potential infection risks to humans or domestic animals due to their close phylogenetic

Transthoracic echocardiography and hemodynamic effects of isoflurane in dexmedetomidine-ketamine-immobilized free-ranging capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris).

This study reports transthoracic echocardiographic values and hemodynamic responses to isoflurane anesthesia in adult immobilized capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris). Animals (median weight: 52.1 kg; range: 35–67 kg) were immobilized with intramuscular dexmedetomidine (7 µg/kg) and ketamine (6 mg/kg) (n = 20), followed by induction with intravenous propofol (2 mg/kg) for inhalant anesthesia (n = 15). Echocardiographic and cardiovascular variables were assessed 40 min after immobilization (TIMMO), and during 20-minute exposures to 0.7% (TISO−0.7) and 0.9% (TISO−0.9) end-expired isoflurane. Ca

Verifying interruption of transmission or elimination of Schistosoma japonicum must consider schistosome infections in wild rodents.

Following the exciting announcement that Anhui Province, one of the historically most heavily Schistosoma japonicum endemic regions in China, has been officially declared to have achieved the goal of province-wide transmission interruption of schistosomiasis, we raise two concerns that merit further consideration. Firstly, S. japonicum is zoonotic, and in China it is known that humans, livestock, and wild animals such as rodents are major reservoirs of infection. While S. japonicum infections both in humans and bovines have recently been reduced to zero prevalence, infection persists at modera

Patterns of distributional congruence of rodent ectoparasites in Iran: A first approach.

Rodents represent the most diverse mammalian group and are considered important hosts for different groups of parasites serving as vectors for some zoonotic agents. Although there have been numerous studies conducted on occurrence records of ectoparasites on rodents, there is a paucity of knowledge regarding the biogeographical patterns of ectoparasites on this group of small mammals. In this study, a quantitative approach was employed to identify patterns of distributional congruence (PDCs) of ectoparasites of rodents in Iran. A total of 121 occurrence records for 37 species of ectoparasites

Endemic and zoonotic cycles of cutaneous leishmaniasis depend on vector feeding preferences: An epidemiological model for Southeastern Mexico.

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a neglected tropical disease caused by Leishmania spp. parasites. It poses significant public health challenges among economically marginalized communities in endemic regions like Southeastern Mexico. Here, we developed a mathematical model to describe the transmission dynamics of CL in the Yucatan Peninsula region, focusing on two key sand fly vectors: Lutzomyia cruciata and Bichromomyia olmeca. METHODS: Transmission was modelled as frequency dependent with Susceptible-Infected dynamics for vectors and rodents, and Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Su

Discovery of a Rodent Hepacivirus in the Brazilian Amazon.

In the eastern Brazilian Amazon, the Viseu municipality has almost 70% of its territory deforested. Monitoring viruses from wildlife hosts enables the prevention and control of epizootic events and outbreaks. Seven samples from three marsupials and two rodents were screened by high-throughput sequencing for virome analysis. The three samples from the two Proechimys roberti rodents, one from the liver, one from the brain, and one from a pooled viscera sample, showed the highest results in terms of viral abundance and richness. From these we obtained two strains of a new rodent hepacivirus (RHV)
